I have a couple to suggest:

-Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (aka Gabriel Knight I )

-Sanitarium

I heard somewhat good things about Harvester, but it seems to be ultra-violent.

You can also mention not purely adventure games, ie action/adventure (like Silent Hill, i suppose)... Although personally i hate action/adventures (apart from the amazing Another World, but that is another story, and it was nearly all action/puzzle anyway ;) ).

It is enjoyable, if not a tad buggy.

Both Amnesia games are rather well done. They're not pure adventure but you can't fight anyway.

Telltale's Walking Dead games are, while glorified interactive movies, *amazing* in the writing department.

Parasitive is bit like adventure rpg, normally I don't really like horror games, or movie, but Parasitive 1 is good.

Clocktower 2 is the only horror adventure game I play, I just like the first stage, but after it arrive to somekind of hospital, this game becoming more "Zombie apocalypse" than trully Horror. But the idea of this games is quite interesting, and the main character suffer bipolar she had a "feminine" side and also reckless and brutal "masculine" side, and you must switch between this two side of her in order to complete each stage, each of the character have its own function.

Although incredibly dated, i think Alone in the Dark deserves a mention. Back in the day it was about as scary as it got. It was very cliched but that was its real charm i thought. I never managed to complete it :(

I would recommend Miasmata to everyone.

It's weird, unique, it's not really a horror game but I was more scared playing this one then some "true" horror games.

Do yourself a favour and don't read about the ending and the story explanation UNTIL you finish the game.

For the true horror adventure game I would recommend old classc, Phantasmagoria.

Alan Wake is very good, yet mainstream horror action-adventure game (mostly action though).

I approve of Miasmata, especially if you're an explorer at heart. It was really atmospheric for me. I did find the "thing" that's scaring you was a bit annoying at times and a bit... laughable. But there was indeed real tension and scary moments.
