Best looking city in your country?

I'm gonna have to go with Detroit.

Tromsø has an idyllic placement and beautiful surroundings. But the city itself is not very pretty. Still somewhat dominated by the building boom in the 60's and 70's. And that's not a great era for beautiful architecture.

Fun fact: If WWII had gone on a while longer, the Germans might very well have supplied us with a rail connection.

Detroit's probably a legit contender if you like industrialpunk.

I do.

I think both Chicago and New York look awful

Haven't seen much of San Francisco, so I'll reserve judgement for now

You've been to Chicago and NYC?

Detroit's immediate downtown is actually very pretty. Lots of lights, colour, a monorail.

I'd probably lean Chicago, with the caveat that I've only been out west to Seattle, not anywhere in Cali. Miami is also very pretty because the colours they use for buildings down there are completely different from the rest of the country.

My favourite Polish city is not Gdańsk.. But Gdańsk's old town is.. probably one of my favourite places on the planet:

Population: 460,000
Metro: 1,080,000

I don't say this of many places - but this place.. just felt romantic to me. I'm not even quite sure what I mean by that - but it evoked some.. interesting emotions in me, to just be there. I was sober, so that's gotta mean something.

Most people would probably say Krakow is Poland's prettiest city, but I prefer Gdansk - at least the old town.

I've seen pictures on the internetz

Pictures can never do a city justice. It's hard to comprehend the incredibleness that is Chicago's skyline without being there. The buildings are more awesome than even the ones in NYC.

In the Netherlands of the cities I saw, the two best looking were Amsterdam and Utrecht. Den Haag was nicer and prettier but more boring.

Sydney, duh. I find it difficult to separate hometown bias from objective truth, but I honestly can't think of many other cities in the world which come close:

I suppose most cities have their ugly areas. My morning train ride goes through some pretty dumpy areas. So not sure how you define 'best looking'. Is it based on the single best looking bit, or by a lack of bad bits?

Hmm I've really been thinking about this today but I dont have a great answer (USA). Scenery wise I am 110% for mountain backdrops (denver, albequerque, maybe salt lake have more consistent view than seattle or portland OR).

Can't speak too much to most cities as I've only been to places for a couple of days or less than 72 hours

But I wasn't that impressed with Portland being in the city (at least downtown). Sure seeing mount hood or the greenspaces they have (just went to the waterfront park with the bridges, hoyt arboretum, and some gardens stuff) was nice but it wasn't that "hub" cultural feel of a city. Same with seattle on how the city sprawls across water ways. But i felt seattle's skyline is better than portland.

Really this is just east coast bias of mine and that I love the national mall in DC and the smithsonians. It just feels cooler

But if I had to be there every day? Everyone hates DC.

I havent been to chicago or new york though

I will say vancouver canada was overall great

But I guess I just really like bits of the Capitol.
