Okay, here is the real list. (TMIT, you could give me my licence back now!):) Here, in this list, you will see the games that you would pick. I cannot include EVERY game but I will do my best! And really, the number two thing threw alot of people off, just pick the game you like best on the list.

I confer upon you your hardcore license, and due to good behavior (also listing a game from the HOMM series), I'm not adding any bad points to it .

I wonder which stronghold it is? There's the newer one and a somewhat unique older one based on dungeons and dragons - both fit the bill as strategy games!

I'll go ahead and pick starcraft but doing so over some on the list, especially HOMM III, is quite difficult.

I also loved the warlords series by SSG, but that was never popular...and it's also very hard to vote against MIND WORMS and alpha centauri ;).

I'll keep my vote the same as before:

Other (Board game) - RoboRally

The bf says Master of Orion 2, just barely over HoMM III.

Out of that lot it has to be Starcraft. Nothing else I've played has been so well balanced, tweaked and perfected.

Cyrano

My short list:

1. Civ, in any form but Colonization.
2. Galactic Civilizations II
3. Not really startegy games, but D&D type games are fun, too.

Darn, I ignored the list. Well, jeez, you forgot some. :p

Lemon, i didn't realise you were such a nerd ;)

Call of Cthulhu best D&D type game though,

I picked AOE II, i never played starcraft. Infact I never much played AOE II supremacy either. For me It was all about just having some fun on all the amazing and varied custom scenarios out there; CBA was my favourite, but later on i also liked RPG's.

you can still play aoe2 online at igzones. If anyone wanted to know how.

Are you kidding? I transcend nerdiness. I was in a bookstore once, standing in line with an armload of sci-fi and computer books, and the little girl in line ahead of me with her Mum said "Mummy, is that lady a dork?"

Yes, really!

Heroes III
Starcraft
Warcraft
C&C Red Alert 1
orion

wondeful games

Am I the only one who really separates RTS from turn-based strategy (TBS?) in their mind?

I like turn-based strategy games so much because they're entirely cerebral. No multi-tasking, building macroing, drag+drop+attack frenzy that takes place in other games - not that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed RTS games, but they generally are more eye-candy, less brain-candy IMHO.

Well, if it bothers you (though nerd-dom might be something to take pride in ;)) you can always take the "scares small children" approach. That seems to work for me regardless of whether I try to apply it :scan:.

While Civ is the best, any of the Total War games are a very close second (decimal points), mainly because they have real battles. Best total war game is Rome:Barbarian Invaision, while Medieval II is
also really good.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see the Rome TW option.

I'd like to agree that Risk is a game of luck.
:p
