Betting and Speculation - The "Entirely Separate Hypercube" Civ!

It could all just be smoke and mirrors. It could be some guy getting his kicks by stirring the pot. Personally I'm inclined to think its genuine. I guess we'll know fasho soon enough.

As far as I remember when the Theodora image was leaked it was up on the forums for a little while, but then the thread and all associated comments were deleted. That makes me inclined to think this isn't real, only because it was brought back up.

There are also parts of it which don't make sense. I still don't believe the axeman chariot archer nonsense...

Byzantium was revealed in the early screenshots via the Religion Beliefs screen.
Theodora was revealed a little later in anecdotes about the intrigue system (or something)
AFAIR, the issue was that somebody posted a picture of her leaderhead before they were allowed to.

ok, someones going to have to clarify this for me, because that thread is long and I don't want to read it all (I glanced at it, and didn't see anything actually show any sources. Also I forgot how horrible people are on those sites.) Why is the UU/UA thing a deal? I didn't see much proof behind them, it strikes me as being similar to what we do for speculation, just taken as fact for some reason. I mean, don't we have any sources to back this up. I only believed the original Shoshone comment because it was made by someone who could be reliable considering he's done it before, this just seems made up from the start. I'm going to quote the unanswered second post: "I'm gonna need some evidence."

I really hope that all this isn't true. It be a let down to see that that's the hyper cube. Also both the unique units are really stupid IMO. I'm still holding on that these ones aren't the real ones. And maybe Firaxis let this be up here so we would all be sad and dissapointed, then when the real ones come out we're all like .

It is belgium look at the africa scenario picture

You know that the scenarios have civs exclusive to them, right? Like the confederacy in the Civil War scenario.

If this is Venice, its hypercube enough and I'm actually looking forward to it.

Double from trade routes means more gold. Focus on gold means more great merchant UI. Which means more puppet CS. Unlike Austria the UA and UU work well to together. Austria doesn't get more gold or any bonuses to CS diplomacy.

Unlike Sweden, there is no perceived pain in gifting GP as the merchant is built for giving away. Add in being able to purchase buildings in puppets (with all the gold you'll be swimming in) and this turns into a unique and interesting Civ to play. Only question is how it will do in hands of AI.

Same for Shoshone, can't wait to get my hands on that scout + see how many more hexes I'll start out with.

Even if not true, they're pretty well designed Civs!

The City-State of Genoa has gifted you a new Great Person!

<finds gifted GP>

Genoan Merchant of Venice

<stares incredulously at the Genoan Merchant of Venice before using it to puppet Genoa>

You have puppeted the City-State of Genoa!

... huh.
But seriously, are we going to receive Merchants of Venice through the Patronage tree, like we do with Khans? I'm not entirely sure what to feel about them if we do.

My guess is that the planning phase for Venice went something like this:
Person 1: Look at this map of the Republic of Venice. They had scattered colonies all over.
Person 2: How can we represent the 'scattered colonies' thing ingame? Players usually just pack cities together.
Person 1: I know! Let's make it so they can't found cities, and have to take over city-states! City-states are usually scattered, right?
Person 3: Well, they'd have to take over them peacefully. Otherwise, there would be diplomacy hits.
Person 2: We don't want to just reuse Austria's UA. Maybe a Unique Great Person?
etc.

I think it was more like this:
Person 1: So all these people on CFC keep asking to be able to play as a city-state. Weird, huh?
Person 2: What's the difference between that and playing OCC?
Person 1: Not much of one. So should we try it? And can we make it fun?
Person 2: Let them be able to puppet cities at least.
Person 1: Good idea, but it still seems too much like OCC, since they will only control one city, so let them be able to rush-buy stuff in puppets. It'll feel really unique!
Person 2: Ok, they'll need some kind of economic bonus then.
Person 1: Excellent! So who should we pick for a civ for this?
Person 2: Venice! Not many people know about their awesome empire and impact on history.
Person 1: People do want an Italian civ, Venice will work both as a fan favorite and as a dark horse. Perfect!

I hadn't thought about that...I am not sure how I feel about that.

... uh? I'm pretty sure that any unit under your control is Venetian, even if it was gifted by another.
In that case, you'll always have a Venetian Merchant of Venice.

Now if only we had a Most Serene Galeass, then Venice would be perfect! :goodjob:

That reminds me - being a UGP, it means other civilizations can get Merchants of Venice from city-states! :) That's kinda cool!

Yes, a French Merchant of Venice is quite cool and doesn't sound awkward at all.

I remain unconvinced.

I first saw this piece of news on Reddit, and without any support, I can't help but be skeptical. I've read the first 5 pages of this forum since the announcement and I couldn't find any supporting evidence. If I missed something, feel free to let me know.

I did a quick look into Themaelstorms's history. I found nothing to support that they work for some sort of press office (or, that's what I think he's supposed to be from? I never did see the original post). Their history is pretty weak and lacks any involvement. Of course, this doesn't mean anything and indicates nothing other than they like to lurk. Their unfulfilled promise of screenshots isn't helping their case at all, though.

There was a comment from the Reddit post that pointed out that the claims were unsubstantiated, and the OP of that post said there were articles to confirm some of the information but didn't provide links. I probed and asked for the articles, also providing a little commentary of what I thought. He provided one link to a Polish forum which I can't read. If someone can find out what he's talking about, please help me out. Google Translate brought in nothing of substance. The other article he mentioned was "lost" (I think he was referring to the post made here on CFC), but then he got all defensive, telling me that he didn't care what I thought.

A lot of people are pointing out how the mods here took the post down quickly as evidence that there was a leak. I say that it's evidence that there wasn't a leak. The fact that they "put it back up" (which I still can't find the OP) might suggest that they thought it was a leak then found out it was just garbage (I don't know how well the mods here are in contact with the dev team, but if they are, then there might've been a few words exchanged).

All in all, this seems rather shady to me. Of course, I only found out about it a couple of hours after everyone else, and CFC seems to move quickly to affirm or deny any claims. I may have missed something. If not, then I remain skeptical.

Same with a French Norwegian Ski Infantry, or even a Danish Norwegian Ski Infantry! :crazyeye:
Sure, you can say that I'm actually pointing out that there's a flaw with the Norwegian Ski Infantry itself, but that's not really my point! :p Thing is, while it's not flawless, it is not unprecedented either.

I'd kinda like it if they were called Patricians or something...
I'm taking that name from Crusader Kings II - I'm actually not sure whether it is historically correct, but from CKII's mechanics it kinda makes sense...

I'm inclined to agree. The other "hints" we got from before that I trust in - the offhand mention of the Moroccan warrior, a civ having a resource-tied UA (Indonesia), etc. - come from official sources. Until we see something official, I'm holding my breath.
