Beyond Earth Factions

who's saying the ARC is dystopian, or if there even are such concepts as the US, Mexico and Canada anymore.
For all we know what we know as Mexico is the site of millions of proxy conflicts between ARC and Mexico.

Exactly! Who knows what might have happened in the world by the year 2250.
Maybe it's possible for Brazil to have a Spanish-named leader (they could have it one right now and it wouldn't be a problem). My main concern is that Firaxis chose a family name too attached to an important historical figure.

As Lord Shadow pointed out, Brazil has been populated by several waves of immigration, so a local leader could have an italian or japanese surname and remain totally credible.

Got it. Well I don't think it takes a Portuguese to say that isn't a Portuguese name, at all. And considering how surprisingly respectful and knowledgeable (in relative terms) Firaxis has been both to Portugal and Brazil in Brave New World (to the point of getting Pedro's specific Rio de Janeiro (!) accent right, as well as the standardEuropean Portuguese "aristocratic posh" accent) I want to believe that hints at a Brazilian invasion of the rest of Spanish South America, as I've long suggested. It also gives some credit to the thought of a Brazil gone Monroe Doctrine over South America ("we are here to unite everyone, even if by force, against our common enemies. No one will dare to touch South America ")

Edit: then again, Brazil's current president has a Bulgarian surname, their former President comes from a Portuguese family (and thus has an almost stereotypical Portuguese surname - da Silva) and Getulio Vargas, Brazil's WWII dictator, had a Spanish surname (Vargas). If I'm not mistaken he was of Spanish origins.

During the Military Dictatorship there was at least one president with a German surname and of German origin.

Brazil's highest ranking general has a Japanese surname and Sao Paulo's governor has an Italian one.

So... You know. The thing is, Bolivar is a very, very specific name.

I'm hinting at a Portuguese-speaking totalitarian that, for political purposes, rebaptised himself Bolivar and has this cult personality around.

More and more I think they planned Brasilia to be the current Venezuela, but in the future ...
I don't think they'd be that plain. I give them more credit than that.

How funny would it be if Bolívar is actually called Bolívar dos Santos or Bolívar da Silva?

According to this article, the Franco-Iberia icon is based on the fleur-de-lis, so I'm assuming that the French influences are greater between the two and that "Elodie" as a leader is going to be inspired moreso by and more-than-likely be from the Franco side rather than the Iberian half.

Why should it not include Russia?

I feel Slav Federation is very underwhelming name for any union Russia as we know it is in. Russia have almost double land compared to Europe (or triple if excluded Russian Europe) I prefer the federation build around Russia, not Russia being part of any regional group.

But I guess it might either being a fancy name for "Russosphere" (i.e. Commonwealth of Independent State) or
CivBE's Russia would be the shadow of current-day Russia, like Asia territory declared independence somewhere in the 21st century :) (Putin gonna hate it)

Either way, I think I am fine with Slav Federation's name now, But Franco-Iberian... :(

Anyone else hoping for more than just these factions? I mean [...]
Anyways give me your opinion!!

If Firaxis are maling it all-out in factions. Say, you get 40 civ in vanilla CivV. Dev would have to try desperately to make 40 civ unique to each other without trade-routing, tourism, religion and many systems that didn't being implemented. It's far easier to do that with 18 civ.

Making 7 "civ" unique gameplay-wise wouldn't being a challenge to them. But unlike civ game. We didn't have "background" of each "civ" so Firaxis will have to tailor the lore of each leader and faction, which also took some works.

In short, this is all you get in vanilla CivBE. The amount of faction can double or even triple if you included all of future expansions,DLC that would play on feature that's not yet implemented in vanilla.

PS. I wish you make your future post less painful to read. No one want to read about 15 lines wall of text, Textbook writer included. :)

That doesn't mean anything. 90% of Russia's population lies within its European territory. You could cut Russia in half, take off the eastern portion and still have most of its population intact.

Essentially Far East Russia exists today only as a natural resource reserve for Russia to sell to China and the EU. Other than that it's also a port to the Pacific. Not many people actually live there.

Anyways the Slavic Federation will probably be Russian in all but name, just like the USSR, so I don't see what the problem is.

Yes , Bolivar is a very specific family name, but remember that this dude may not be of that family but may have adopted the name for political reasons. Caeser was also a very specific family name, and then every time some jumped up general became emperor he would change his name to Caeser, Augustus or some weird combo to legitimize themselves. I'm guessing this is the case here: The Bolivar guy gave himself the name as propaganda.

Well, think about it. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics had no mention of Russia in its name, yet in reality that was by far the dominant party. It could very well be the same case with the Slavic Federation.

And let's not forget official titles are in no small part meant to give an external image. The Federation might give an outward impression, no matter how thin, that things aren't all that lopsided within the polity. And inward as well to some extent: for non-Russians, perhaps at least a superficial assurance that they're well-represented among their federated peers.

Too bad they didn't go with Bundchen for Brasilia - they could have used Giselle as the model (pun unavoidable) for the faction leader's avatar.

I bet Polystralia is a result of sea level rise. Australia took in populations from the Pacific Ocean countries which ended up submerged (Tuvalu, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, etc.), along with refugees from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The coast of Australia ended submerged as well, so populations had to be moved inland. I think Canberra would still be ok.

What if the Slavic Federation is ruled by a junta of generals from each constituent nation, and Kolzov was exiled for some transgression?

[...] If they just wanted a faction led by a Libertador type of leader, I don’t see why they’d pick Brazil instead of one (or a group of) its neighbors. Does it have anything to do with the Bolivarian Revolution? Do they know that most Brazilians probably don’t have a clue on who Bolívar was?

Exactly. If Firaxys wanted this type of civ, another country would be better (Something related to Gran Colombia maybe?). As you have pointed out, most brazilians don't even know who Bolívar was, so it doesn't make sense to have a leader named like this, even if it's just for propaganda. I don't have problems with spanish surnames, but this one is too tied to a historical figure.

Nevertheless, I'm hoping for a background history to explain this situation ;)

Wow, quite an outdated map. I mean, the Baltic States, Ukraine, Belarus,... they still show as Russian territory?
Yeah, that's a map of the Soviet Union, but the point remains even in modern Russia.
