[Beyond the Sword] History In The Making

Ha I still remember that thread.

I'm not entirely happy with my physics and aluminum experiment as a requirement for airships...

On the bright side, the A.I. was more likely to build frigates to chase away the privateers.

On the downside, with a tech lead, the airships still seem overpowered. I understand the damage limit for airships has been nerfed from 30% to 20% in 3.17. Maybe I should try that rather than adding combustion as a requirement.

Any thoughts?

In my opinion, airships should only be used as reconnaissance units, perhaps with the ability to to minimal damage to units or destroy improvements. Nothing more. They definetly shouldn't upgrade to fighters.

I too entirely agree with this. I'm not an expert on Airships by any means, but don't actually know of them being using in an agressive role...I'd reckon they'd be far too slow...A WWI Vickers .303 machine gun would make mincemeat of it. However, they probably had a greater range than early WWI type aircraft..

I'd make them Recon only, with maybe 50% greater range than present.

Airships in WWI were a lot like the SCUDS in Desert Storm - an inaccurate strategic /psychological weapon that tied down a lot of enemy units , making airships cost-effective.

They had a higher ceiling than the early aircraft and artillery at the outset.
Overtime they adapted and improved aircaft and arty to reach the airships.

For that reason, I wouldn't be opposed to airships causing unhappiness over enemy cities, or an anti-aircraft & anti- tank promotions available for arty at some point.

I'd be fine with airships as recon with only the abillity to damage subs, or strictly recon, provided it had a longer range and better visibillity than fighters.

As for upgrading to fighters- The Graff was dismantled and it's aluminum frame was melted down to make airplanes. So it's not ahistorical. If the airship were strictly recon with the abillity to see subs, into cities, and cause unhappiness in them- it wouldn't gain experience, so upgrading to fighters wouldn't be much of a problem, but we have spy planes in this mod, so maybe tha'ts the natural progression.

A strictly recon unit that could spot subs might make for some interesting naval gameplay, if the A.I. used subs.

I ramble. Thanks for your thoughts.

Why is it SO hard for people on boards to just answer a question with a simple yes or no? Is it compatible with 3.17? No/Yes. Is it GOING to be compatible... no/yes? It isn't hard and people ask questions because you are the expert and they are the student.

I HATE asking questions on boards because so many people are arrogant and think I should know what they know. If I did, I WOULDN'T BE ASKING THE FREAKING QUESTION!

just found out: the AI will never build an armory AND a military academy. the great general AI seems to be very bad.

Not sure how you can be certain of this, please illuminate :)......who's the avatar babe btw?

I'm no expert, I'm just a fan. I mostly know what I read here - I'm kinda like a HitM librarian. I don't expect anyone to read it all. If it were completely within my power it would already be 3.17 compatible. It's not.

For now all I can offer you is the workaround in post#2032 of this thread.

I don't mean to be arrogant:(

To answer your questions as best I can-

1) It's not always that simple.

2)No.

3) No. Not this month. I haven't given up , but I wouldn't want my optomism to mislead you. I can't say when, if ever.

Wow, this thread is still going. :)

I would have thought History in the Making would have been long forgotten about by now.

I took a long break from gaming. Too much in real life going on this summer. What with long hours at work, a new girlfriend and tending to my children, I haven't had much spare time for gaming. I recently did a major hardware upgrade to my gaming rig, so I thought maybe I'd try and get back into the Civ4 modding scene.

I see a patch came out... v3.17. I'll see what I can do about updating HiTM to be v3.17 compatible. Please don't ask me when I'll get it done, though. I still have alot of stuff going on in real life, so I'll get to this project when I can.

In the mean time, I'm going to do some research on what mods are updated to v3.17, and see which ones can be easily converted from v3.12 up to v3.17 myself.

So stay tuned... I'll work on this when I can.

Nice to hear from you, Grave. Take time for real life, nothing beats real life in the end. I'll be waiting patiently :).

Greetings to the prodigal son :D

Looking forward to it :)

Maybe you should just read and see what other modders did before you dive into your own mod again Grave. There have been some achievements lately (WoC i.e.) that give larger freedom and some mods took nice approaches to problems/challenges.

Hi Grave, glad you could look in on us!

Drew fixed the event bug - see post 1908

Nice... I'll check it out. :)

Thanks for keeping this alive, man! :)

Nah... I'd rather do my own thing, my own way. I enjoy it better that way. I'm going to try and port the current version of HiTM to v3.17 first. I'm not really going to add anything new at the moment.

Glad to see you again ;) and no worries keeping this going, I still play it as standard (with a few little tweaks of my own;))

Rusty needs thanking too, he's doing a great job as HITM "librarian" helping folks out with questions, and keeping track of things :goodjob:

Indeed... mad props to both of you! :)

I haven't read through the several pages of stuff since I last logged in. But I'll check out those posts that Rusty has documented.

You should send me some of your tweaks, too. I'd like to see them, if you don't mind. ;)

I would like to know when this mod will be updated to 3.17
