[Beyond the Sword] History In The Making

Hi Anthropoid

I've had the same problems on Prince+Epic, I consider myself 7.5 out of 10 as a CIV4 player. (well, maybe not)

I've switched to Prince+Marathon and I'm on my way winning. There is something about Epic, some tweaking that makes it much harder, much harder.

Hello Grave.

Two small questions,

1.Why is Iron needed for Submarin? It's not needed for
Battleship or Destroyer.

2.Why has Submarine moved to Radar on the tech tree?
Submarines participated in WWI and WWII before the invention of radar.

Believe it or not, I'm still playing 1.52 from last week,
enjoying it very much and moving slowly towards 1800,
victory ahead.

Can we talk about strategy for a second?

Can anybody offer some synthetic strategy points that will give me a point of departure for understanding how HiTM differs from vanilla BTS?

Also, I started working on that map, using my own approach, and I've sent a note to Grave seeking feedback, but I guess maybe he is busy. I cannot locate the WB.save file, where are those at?

My general rules for re-learning civ because of some mod or scenario or new version is to constantly remind myself that it isn't the same , even though it looks the same , and check the civilopedia. To make an analogy, It's more like a game of random personalities.. even though you clearly see your dear friend Hattie, she may behave like that angry Shaka.

The pyramids give you walls now instead of gov options like they did in Civ I & IV, or graineries like they did in Civ III. Be sure you're trying to do what you want to do. Check your civics before you change them because they aren't what they used to be either. Same is true of a leader's traits and the tech tree.

There are a wealth of new options- units, promotions, leaders, civs, resources, victory conditions...

So it seems like nothing is the same, but there is more of it .

My strategy is play as Rome and consult the civilopedia.
They're called legionary again, but they still make up for your mistakes.
If you build them in a city with an armory, you can carry that dominating experience forward.

Someone can research A-10 technology?

I can't. I don't know why. I'm in future tech and A-10 technology isn't allowed and is red in science tree.

Hello Grave, I'm having trouble with Rifleman. When I upgraded all of my Musketmen to Riflemen, they all appeared as Infantry and the Infantry appeared as pink Marines. I'm not sure about the Marine part but the pink I'm sure of. I know this because I did some checking with the Worldbuilder . I don't think it affects gameplay, it's just a visual thing so far. I'll try to get a screen shot for you. Confidence on the screenshot - not high. Yeah baby! My first screen shot. Now back to the matter at hand. The order of the units from left to right is Musketman, Rifleman, Infantry and Marine. The middle two are not right.

UPDATE. When I selected the units with the wrong graphics, they switched to the right graphics and then back to the wrong graphics at the end of the units turn. Strange. Any idea what's happening?

Good advice Rusty Edge. I'm doing pretty good on Noble, Large, Terra, Odyssey, with Alexander and his phalanxes now. Course I did go into the WBeditor and make sure I had horse, bronze and deer in my capital start area! I like the Odyssey setting, seems more realistic. I've killed Egypt and reduced Persia to one city. Khmer is a weakling intermediary state between me and the other early medieval super power Gilgamesh. Dutch and Celts out there somewhere. This one should be entertaining all the way through . . .

On The "Taliban Event" Bug, it looks like Grave completely forgot to add any "Event Text"...I've no idea what he wants it to display though, therefore its noted in the "to fix" list for when he returns.

Is there anything that would prevent the PerfectWorld v 1.11 script from being included rather than the 1.09 script? I don't know anything about the python scripting, so I'm afraid to do it lest I screw up the resource placement.

A note about Odyssey

My impression from Odyssey (Same number of turns as Marathon) is that because it's tweaked for longer lasting military techs, techs and build cost are reduced to a point where strategic planning especially commerce and science plan ahead is less effective and the core has shifted from planning to fast building whatever new units are available.

Let me emphasize by an extreme example, lets assume all
techs are four turns and all buildings are six or eight turns.
In that case careful planning and investing in science are useless.

Maybe I'm wrong and I just like Marathon better then Odyssey but playing Odyssey feels more like RTS game. (Sorry for being rude)

Thanks for listening

Had my first CTD, game patches to 1.54, (no problems with 1.52).
Cannot load previous games, I got the CTD at 1640BC, I tried to load earlier
saves from autosave but I still get CTD, can only load 1900BC but havn't
played it yet.

Some questions, Barb. Axeman at 2000BC
without having bronze in their cities?

Got a message about Barb. stealth ship with advanced
anti radar coating near my city 1800BC approx.
Is it kind of a joke or firaxis humor?

Gents,

I've noticed that the Cust Dom Adv module doesnt seem to
be saving my changes .... am I missing something ?

Thx ... and EXCELLENT mod .... I recently discovered it and am hooked ;)

Hello guys,

1.are there any pre made maps available for this mod apart from those included? I'm soo bored with earth maps, I'd really like to get some nice well-drawn hand made maps for this mode (something like 'terra', with empty new world to colonize later on) but I can't find any. The map generator sucks coz it's only making maps with very limited recources (1/capital) which makes the game slow and boring.

2. Could I use the 'Giant Earth Map (36 civs) created by Gengis Kai but in HitM with all of its new resources by any chance?

Thx in advance

Just thought I'd check in and see how thing are going...

Yes, take a rest! You've been spitting out patches faster than I can finish games anyway. One little thought spurred on by the horse archer conversation...what would you think of not requiring horses as a resouce for chariots? The whole reason chariots were developed was that at the time horses were really too small to ride in battle.

That's true... but it still would need horses. Larger, rideable horses I consider come along with Horseback Riding tech... to simulate the breeding of horses for riding. Without it, you can only use horses for Chariots. ;)

I think you forgot to grant CONFUCIAN_CATHEDRAL with
Happiness bonus.

I'll look into that.

1.Is there a limit for W.Wonders per city ? many wonders require a Palace thus can be built in two of my cities only.

I believe only National Wonders have a cap of 2 per city. World Wonders should be unaffected.

2.Salt becomes obsolete with refrigeration, salt also
serves as a resorce for Synagog's happy bonus, so maybe
change the resource bonus for synagogs or not obsolete it.

That's true, but for the most part Religions are pretty much obsolete in the more modern eras, with Corporations taking over there after.

I like how the Synagogue is currently in v1.54.

Would be interesting a advanced carrier. Could be a nuclear carrier, with +1 moviment and 5 aircraft capacity.

That would be interesting. I tried something like that with the Warlords version of HiTM. I had a regular Carrier, powered by Oil... and a Nuclear Carrier powered by Uranium.

It got a little too redundant, so I cut it out for the BtS version.

Grave: There's a text issue on "Taliban" quest (it spawned on the game i was playing, but said "TXT_QUEST_TALIBAN_SOMETHING", rather than the usual message). Im playing 1.54 as i speak :p.

Thanks. JKP1187 may have accidently left that out of his Events mod. I'll look into this.

Anyone have any ideas about a Sniper unit for the mod? Good ranged attack that takes longer than a normal fighter to build since Snipers take longer to train.

I don't think a sniper unit would be a good idea. A sniper is only one man (or a very small team). Wouldn't be very practical in the grand scheme of things, at least to me.

Yes, my setting is at 1 and not 0. But, two people have the same problem. Screen shot isn't needed. Imagine your screen shot without the white squares to mark a ranged bombardment.

Yes... I am patched up and downloaded and installed 1.5 over again to make sure. I can change the archer to enable ranged bombard, but when I try and go to "0", then save, then back to "1" for ranged bombard, nadda.

I don't know what you mean. Dale's Combat Mod is included in it's entirety. You just need to look into the options a little further to tweak it to your liking.

TALIBAN_EVENT (which is a barbarian uprising event, apparently. The text is nonexistant.

One of the functions of the great general gives all units "FREE UPGRADE", which doesn't seem to do anything, and is noted in the Civopedia as a placeholder. :D

Ok, maybe I'm not understanding. The "Free Upgrade" upgrade doesn't do anything according to the 'Pedia.

What are you saying it does?

The Taliban issue has been noted.

Why does some people not understand how the Free Upgrade promotion works? I just don't get it.

And yes... the Pedia explains what it does.

DCM is producing some problems. I started a game, was wiping out the Nat Ams :D , and just waiting to finish them off to get my GG. Well suddenly the whole game CTD! ouch..

Knowing how Dale works... he'll have identified this already and will have a fix for it in a later patch.

got a question about automated workers they seem to really like to build fortreses alot instead of something usefull like cottages :) are they supposed to build fortresses all over the place

Your civics will greatly affect what the workers will build. Hereditary Rule will probably make the workers produce more forts, etc.

They do when u adopt Monarchy, forts provide bonuses under Monarchy, check the ingame info screens.

Not just the Monarchy Tech, but the Hereditary Rule Civic itself.

Anyone offer some help? I keep getting a memory allocation error crash. used to only happen sometimes when I was trying to load but have had it occur in middle of turn too.

I got 2 G of Ram and 2 G of virtual.

it might be that I was playing planetary map size though honestly *grin*

You're probably running out of memory somewhere. I'm willing to bet you're running out of video RAM. HiTM is alot more taxing on your video card than vanilla Civ. ;)

And yes... Planetary is a HUGE MEMORY HOG!

I played a few turns to get to trebs. The ranged bombardment graphic is there [white grid] then the treb bombards units in the field. Every time though there was no damage done. I never managed to harm anyone in five or six turns. Also when I bombarded units in the city the treb "did no damage"

So the function works for me, but no very effectively. I dont know if it's bugged or just balanced.

Interesting... I never had that problem. No matter, I'm sure Dale will fix it in the next version of DCM.

When he updates, I update. :)

Battleship or Destroyer.

Submarines participated in WWI and WWII before the invention of radar.

1. Ooops.. I'll fix this.

2. For game balance.

Someone can research A-10 technology?

I can't. I don't know why. I'm in future tech and A-10 technology isn't allowed and is red in science tree.

You can't research the GAU-8 Cannon. You can only obtain it from building the Fairchild Republic wonder.

What Civilization were you using? It'll help me narrow it down.

I didn't know there was a v1.11. I can add it for v1.55.

Barbarians don't need resources to build units.

I think that's a Firaxis joke...

I've noticed that the Cust Dom Adv module doesnt seem to
be saving my changes .... am I missing something ?

Probably a bug in the BUG Mod. Unfortunately, I think the BUG team dissolved and are no longer updating this fine piece of coding anymore. :(

1. I'm working on a few fictional maps.

2. No, won't work.

Just wanted to say THANKS to DrewBledsoe for babysitting this thread for me while I've bee away. :goodjob:

I'm still taking a well deserved vacation from Civ modding... I'm not sure when I'll release v1.55. Probably won't be until April at the earliest. I have ALOT on my plate between now and then, so I won't have much time for any computer games.

But I have all your ideas noted, especially the quirky bugs identified... and they will be corrected in v1.55.

Welcome back Grave, I am playing as America. Sorry I didn't include that bit of info.

No worries, all the bugs so far found are pretty minor, I don't mind checking in every day or so to help, and if anything more major comes up, will attempt an interim fix....

@ Hexed

I know it's a tired old chestnut, but you also want to double check your drivers. Case in point...

Previously I've been enjoying Grave's lovely work since the days of .02 without too much in the way of trouble at all. I recently (as in in the last three weeks) bought myself a nice swanky new HP 8710w. It's a business lappie (that doubles as a gaming lappie pretty nicely) with 4Gb of RAM (Although Windows will only recognise a shade over 3 of that), an nVidia Quadro FX1600M which is basically an 8700 - a 512mb Video Card basically.

All of a sudden I was getting wierd graphic bugs and CTDs caused by MAF *all* over the place. Found either with the 1600 drivers in different windows resolutions would cause different problems (Windows in 1280x1024 looks wierd, but it's stable), and apparently downloading and using 8700 drivers works as well - although I haven't been brave enough to try it yet.

Point is, drivers can sometimes do wierd things... checking out drivers as a first port of call is rarely a bad thing to do.

Hello Grave, thanks for your answers, I still think that a synagog should have a happy bonus which doesn't obsolete like the other Cathedral Class buildings.

But now I have a real

strange problem and I need help

On the science screen, on the tech. icons
I see the same text for a building allowed to be build
on more then one tech. Foe example:

Can build Aqueduct appears on Masonary and on Mathematics.

The great Lighthouse appears on Sailing and on Masonry.

Only the text not the tiny pics.

After doing a text search I've found Aqueduct in CIV4BuildingInfos.xml

with the following lines:
<PrereqTech>TECH_MATHEMATICS</PrereqTech>
<TechTypes>
<PrereqTech>TECH_MASONRY</PrereqTech>
<PrereqTech>NONE</PrereqTech>
<PrereqTech>NONE</PrereqTech>
</TechTypes>

But the same lines are in the vanilla version too.

So the problem must lie somewhere else

Please help, It's really confusing.

I've reinstalled the game and applied patch 1.54

Thanks

Not really sure what your asking here. An Aqueduct requires Masonry AND Mathematics (as do catapults, and The Great Wall)...In HITM its possible to research Mathematics without first researching Masonry, but that won't allow you to build stuff that ALSO requires Masonry.

This is why the text occurs on both techs. They are both required to build the afforementioned Aqueducts. Likewise, the Grt Lighthouse requires Masonry AND Sailing (and a normal lighthouse first)...

Hi DrewBledsoe

You are right, I am used to read the line: Enables Aqueduct
or similar only on the tech that enables Aqueducts and not on a prereq. tech to that tech, since the tech tree has changed the info should be on both techs.

Thanks

What forum is the bug mod posted in so I can read up on it? I'm not familiar with it or what enabling it will do.
