Anarchy
Following Outbreak the few remaining human survivors faced danger on two fronts. The undead hordes drove them out of the cities into a wilderness which had become home to those determined to survive by any means neccesary. Roving biker gangs patrolled the abandoned highways, pillaging from settlements and killing the living and the undead with impunity. While humanity teetered on the brink such gangs flourished - some had simply banded together to survive, and eked out a meagre existence scavenging for supplies and skirmishing with the undead; for some though, glory and plunder were the motivating forces, and none were safe from their lust for blood and gold. As humanity clawed itself back to some semblance of civilization most factions made organising trained militia a priority, and gradually started to repulse the bandit attacks.
Zoroaster the Great
As the road gangs fell to the undead or the retribution of those they had previously wronged, only the shrewdest and most ruthless survived. Zoroaster, leader of Eve's Forgotten Children was one such individual. An aimless drifter prior to Outbreak, he found his calling in the savage opportunistic environment of the New World, looting and burning with a ruthless passion. He also had the foresight to notice the emergence of new powers though, and in Wilhelm Zanzibar's coup of AO5 Zoroaster struck a deal to offer a hundred blades for the coup in exchange for amnesty from any Zanzibar aggression once Wilhelm formed the First Dynasty. The deal was kept and leaving the East Coast to Wilhelm, Zoroaster struck west, acquiring vast hauls of plunder from Foundationist, Garden, and later Fabian settlements. Zanzibar was only too happy to provide arms and supplies to the Forgotten Children as they raided his rivals, and this informal truce gave Zoroaster and his Highwaymen the means to strike terror across the continent.
Glory and Madness
With Wilhelm's death, and Otto Zanzibar's succesion, relations cooled with the Zanzibar Dynasty. Zoroaster became increasingly bold and reckless, striking targets seemingly at random including several Zanazibar border towns. It is commonly held that the influence of Sunya was beginning to dictate his actions at this time, proclaiming, as its adherents did, that Zoroaster was the 'avatar of the void'.
The Sect of Sunya can trace its origins to rogue monks expelled from the Foundationist congregation, but it was with Eve's Forgotten Children that they rose to prominence. The Children, and especially Zoroaster held a curious position in the New World - outlaws hunted by many they nevertheless exuded a dangerous glamour that pulled in many dissidents and outsiders from around the New World. This is how a small cadre of revolutionary preachers espousing the 'embracing of the void' came to find Zoroaster, and began to exert a strong and malign influence upon his will. Without allies, and seemingly bent on a path of self destruction, it seemed Zoroaster's star was set to burn out.
The Thane of the East Coast
Following Second Outbreak a nihilistic mania swept the New World. Humanity appeared doomed, the only responses to the chaos seemingly despair or madness. Revelling in the destruction, the priests of Sunya urged Zoroaster to complete the task of spreading the void, which he did with a viscious determination. Over an eight month period the remnants of civilization on the Eastern seaboard were swept away with Zoroaster declaring himself Thane of the East Coast, holding dominion over the ravaged remains of humanity which remained there, and setting up court at Dies Irae. Zoroaster's 'reign' was a short one though, within a year the Empire of Solomon had swept across the continent restoring order. Those Children who had not been killed or comitted suicide in accordance with the doctrine of Sunya, fled at the sight of overwhelming forces. Zoroaster was left alone in his palace when Delilah Godwinson arrived to arrest him for crimes against humanity. Resisting arrest he was cut down by her Rainbow Guard.
Fragments
The remaining Children fled into the desert to avoid capture, now under the leadership of Zeno, one of Zoroaster's former lietennants. There they remained for years. Unable to return to civilization and lacking the means or will to fight the massive Empire of Solomon they existed from day to day, raiding isolated settlements to survive. During the Conspiracy of the Three States when the Empire was overthrown, Zeno roused the children to go out in one final blaze of glory. Zeno himself would often lead charges against Empire strongholds, and the Children's fearless attacks destabalised the Empire while Atlantean and Ki insurgents pressed home the advantage. It was during the insurgence that The Children's final act played itself out. The Pale Hand, already responsible for Second Outbreak, had taken advantage of the chaos to prepare an even more potent biological weapon capable of infection on a global scale. Zeno led a strike team into the Hand's base of operations, persuading Ariadne Zeboim to betray her brother and allow Zeno passage to kill him before he could release the weapon. Zeno's final act as leader of the Forgotten Children was to disband them - with the coming era of peace he recognised the Children no longer had a purpose, and so faded from the pages of history.
