Hi whiplash,
Sorry I didn't realise I had to baby you to this extent. My Apologies.
It's a 20 hr game which supposedly will be around 24 true hours. And you've missed 4/5? Wow...fed your goldfish lately?
Ok Sarcasm mode off.
Zenn did NOT miss that turn. He logged in like 3 times during it to see if Portugal would attack him!
I have NO Smtp server as I use hotmail. (I move internationally so not worth using a local server)
In the other games I play we don't even have civstats, just know to log in once a day and do your turn.
'Hamachi' lets you connect to the server otherwise there would be no game.
As to the civstats server. I'm guessing the password is simply 6037. Sincere Apologies to all for not writing it down, as a Noob there I had no idea it would be so important.
Now back to Whiplash, if you wish to pull out fine? Just tell us so we can get another.
I'm in a crappy starting positon surrounded by Jungle and theres a player very close by...but do you see me whining...oops ok just once!
Hopefully anyone that wishes to pull out will tell us and allow the game to go on rather than being a softc*ck and just not playing anymore.
Sorry to the others who are not complaining but that post got my cranky juices flowing!
Well, this is gunna be a long post by virtue of the issues involved here. Whether or not I continue partly depends on the host's response.
To use your terminology, yes a good host should "baby" the players. I have finished two PitBoss games, am in another 14, and have hosted my own since October. Your game is the only one that does not feature an auto-mail turn notification. It's an important feature for two reasons. The first is for the conveniance of the players. As I said, I'm in 14 pitboss games. Do you think I should be loading every game constantly just to see if my turn has come up? Besides every time I load Warlords I risk a crash as the load does crash about 10% of the time and I would interupt the pitboss I am running causing hardship for the players. The second value to the auto-notification is that players are alerted so that they can play early. Without the notice two things happen: people miss turns (as has happened here to several players) and the turn is practically guarenteed to take the full timer. In some of the games I'm in the turn rolls over in less than 12 hours even though the timer is set to 24. This accelerates game-play which is a good thing.
With the number of games I'm playing I have a regular routine for taking my turn that relies on that notification. That's why I missed the turns.
I think a good host has a responsibility to make it easy and pleasurable for the players. Part of this responsibility is to strive for an evenly balanced game. A player that is killed or handicapped early makes for a lousy game. Missing turns later in the game is no big deal; but it's very important in the beginning. I still babysit the game that I've hosted since October even though I was eliminated 3 months ago. Their are five players left of the original 12 and it is still a good balance between the allies. The outcome of the game is still up for grabs. In that game I make intermediate saves 3 times per day in case a reload is necessary and if I see missed turns I e-mail the player to see if there is a problem. I also setup clear rules covering the double move exploit and a prohibition against war for 20 turns. In your game we would not be down a player now with that rule. What are you going to do the first time somebody complains about being a victim of the double move?
You must have a local ISP to post here. I would wager that ISP could provide you with a free e-mail account that could be used for the notifications.
As to Zenn, he probably didn't bother playing his turn as he saw the situation as hopeless. Again, this should not happen. It makes no sense for a player to die just because another player made a lucky guess in which way to send his warrior.
Hamachi is necessary to play in this game only because you made it so. I have no experience with Hamachi and can see no benefit to it for this game. It runs the same as all of my other games. Maybe if you were running this through GameSpy Hamachi would be beneficial.
Saying that you set up CivStats without giving the url is not particularily player-friendly. The password was another fumble.
A good host tries to make it easy for the players to minimize frustrations.
You apparently see me as whining; I'm only offering you the benefit of my experience.
