Beyond the Sword PitBoss (Hamachi)

And again I re-iterate that one of the players apart from me has managed to sign on. So I am confused why the rest cannot.

Oh dear looks as if I am going to be eliminated in turn 5!! A personal record. Just my luck.

How so?
nlknl

Warrior just showed up on my border while my warrior is several paces away. The foreign warrior (portugal i think) has just declared war and entered my territory. It is only turn 4 so the my only city is undefended. Next turn he takes my captial. End of game!

Zen,

You have SUCH bad luck.

From now on I intend to start all games with advanced start and 115 points. Allowing purchase of a settler/city + warrior/scout depending on starting techs. The beauty of this is the enforced 10 turns of peace that this will bring in probably making such early wipes a thing of the past.

lol

That's halarious! How the heck did u guys start so close together?

It was Portugal. Eran has been using my system until he heads back home Thursday. So I was invited to see the genocide.

Also explains why I logged in as his silly name last night :D

Civstats uploaded although the site doesn't cater for some BTS features

Don't you think a url link would help the players?

All of the other hosts in my dozen or so games have entered their SMTP data so that players receive turn notifications.

Since I missed 4 of the first 5 turns I see little purpose in continuing this game. Those missed turns have allowed my neighbor to suck up the huts near my city.

classical hero has missed the last 3 turns
aahz missed the last turn
amh52 missed one turn
nubble missed one turn
zen missed the turn before the one in which he was eliminated.

This game is now serioulsy imbalanced.

btw, hamatchi does nothing for this.

How do you know if you've missed a turn? I didn't realize that I missed a turn...I thought you get 20 hours before your turn skips?

That is not my password for the game. I have tried numerous times to get into civstats, and I am not going to try again, since I have tries plenty of times already.

Hi whiplash,

Sorry I didn't realise I had to baby you to this extent. My Apologies.

It's a 20 hr game which supposedly will be around 24 true hours. And you've missed 4/5? Wow...fed your goldfish lately?

Ok Sarcasm mode off.

Zenn did NOT miss that turn. He logged in like 3 times during it to see if Portugal would attack him!

I have NO Smtp server as I use hotmail. (I move internationally so not worth using a local server)

In the other games I play we don't even have civstats, just know to log in once a day and do your turn.

'Hamachi' lets you connect to the server otherwise there would be no game.

As to the civstats server. I'm guessing the password is simply 6037. Sincere Apologies to all for not writing it down, as a Noob there I had no idea it would be so important.

Now back to Whiplash, if you wish to pull out fine? Just tell us so we can get another.

I'm in a crappy starting positon surrounded by Jungle and theres a player very close by...but do you see me whining...oops ok just once!

Hopefully anyone that wishes to pull out will tell us and allow the game to go on rather than being a softc*ck and just not playing anymore.

Sorry to the others who are not complaining but that post got my cranky juices flowing!

Nooble, actually it's longer than that.

However I suspect you just didn't press end turn again :)

Just got an answer regarding the passwords.
Long story short, I didn't set passwords for you guys so the field was blank for each and every one of you.

Just to make sure that we're on the same page I have set the password for everyone except Nero (who must have left the field blank) to 6037

Hopefully we'll all be receiving turn clicked over messages now.

6037 worked. Thanks Troymk1 and sorry it caused you so much trouble.

With regard to the player close to you, don't get any silly idea. I have another warrior coming out next turn...

Well, this is gunna be a long post by virtue of the issues involved here. Whether or not I continue partly depends on the host's response.

To use your terminology, yes a good host should "baby" the players. I have finished two PitBoss games, am in another 14, and have hosted my own since October. Your game is the only one that does not feature an auto-mail turn notification. It's an important feature for two reasons. The first is for the conveniance of the players. As I said, I'm in 14 pitboss games. Do you think I should be loading every game constantly just to see if my turn has come up? Besides every time I load Warlords I risk a crash as the load does crash about 10% of the time and I would interupt the pitboss I am running causing hardship for the players. The second value to the auto-notification is that players are alerted so that they can play early. Without the notice two things happen: people miss turns (as has happened here to several players) and the turn is practically guarenteed to take the full timer. In some of the games I'm in the turn rolls over in less than 12 hours even though the timer is set to 24. This accelerates game-play which is a good thing.

With the number of games I'm playing I have a regular routine for taking my turn that relies on that notification. That's why I missed the turns.

I think a good host has a responsibility to make it easy and pleasurable for the players. Part of this responsibility is to strive for an evenly balanced game. A player that is killed or handicapped early makes for a lousy game. Missing turns later in the game is no big deal; but it's very important in the beginning. I still babysit the game that I've hosted since October even though I was eliminated 3 months ago. Their are five players left of the original 12 and it is still a good balance between the allies. The outcome of the game is still up for grabs. In that game I make intermediate saves 3 times per day in case a reload is necessary and if I see missed turns I e-mail the player to see if there is a problem. I also setup clear rules covering the double move exploit and a prohibition against war for 20 turns. In your game we would not be down a player now with that rule. What are you going to do the first time somebody complains about being a victim of the double move?

You must have a local ISP to post here. I would wager that ISP could provide you with a free e-mail account that could be used for the notifications.

As to Zenn, he probably didn't bother playing his turn as he saw the situation as hopeless. Again, this should not happen. It makes no sense for a player to die just because another player made a lucky guess in which way to send his warrior.

Hamachi is necessary to play in this game only because you made it so. I have no experience with Hamachi and can see no benefit to it for this game. It runs the same as all of my other games. Maybe if you were running this through GameSpy Hamachi would be beneficial.

Saying that you set up CivStats without giving the url is not particularily player-friendly. The password was another fumble.

A good host tries to make it easy for the players to minimize frustrations.

You apparently see me as whining; I'm only offering you the benefit of my experience.

A word on my early departure before I go.

First off I don't blame the player who iced me so early, I would have done the same thing in the circumstances. In the very first stages of the game in SP it is very safe leaving your first city undefended; AI's never take advantage of early vulnerablity, barbs don't spawn till later and animals won't enter borders. But MP is a totally different game. Leaving your capital before building a defender is a real gamble. Stay and you lose out on the goody huts and lag behind in mapping. Leave and there is just that chance that one of your rivals will find you first and put you out of the game.

portugal (who iced me) did exactly the right thing. I know because just as his warrior found my border my warrior popped a map giving goodie hut that showed me his city. He was on a coastal corner so my close by city basically blocked him from expansion (without a galley). Worse for him my civ was creative and protective!! Sooner or later he would have to take me out if he wanted to build more than one other city and if he left it until I got archery it would almost impossible. What is more the goodie I popped was just one tile further from his city border than his was to mine. So if he hadn't burned me there and then I might well have burned him first. Although he couldn't have known that I suppose, unless he also popped a map hut
