A harsh banging awoke Jalal Khan from his slumber. He groggily rose from the bed trying not to disturb his three wives that were still asleep. The persistent banging continued. “In the name of Allah I am coming!” he shouted irritably. Who the devil could it be at this ungodly hour? He wondered.
He swung the door open to find an Imperial Messenger standing before him “Your father Sher Shah requests your presence before him” said the messenger stonily.
Jalal Khan’s throat caught. A summons from his father at this hour only meant one thing…
Jalal Khan entered the bedchamber of his father, walking down the white marble floor flanked by enormous pillars along the side. He was joi The ceiling was encrusted with gold and precious stones. The doors to the chamber were massive and flanked by armed guards. They saluted him, and opened to door for him.
Jalal Khan entered the darkened room with a deep sense of foreboding. Inside the room reeked of powerful herbal medicines, and incense that attempted to mask another odor. The odor of death…
Turning his eyes toward his father he saw father lying in the bed, next to him sat the Royal Physician. The old man’s eyes were circled with dark rings and his face was haggard and drawn. The eyes were blank and stared emptily past him. Jalal Khan feared he was too late. He rushed forward “Father!” he called clasping his hand.
The old man blinked wearily and moved his head slightly to better see him. “This is my last breath my son and with it I conjure you, as you value the permanence of the kingdom by affability to friends and enemies, and by showing liberality to all to the utmost of your power. Many like me have viewed the fountain, but they are gone and their eyes closed forever. Appears before you someone who boasts, I am Lord, shows himself to his fellows and vaunts, I am Lord. When the affairs of mortals have become dependent on him, suddenly advances death, and exclaims I am Lord! I conquered the world by policy and valor but could not overcome the grave.” He sighed
"There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Praise be to Allah.” And having said that he closed his eyes for the last time.
