TO: Fernando of Spain
FROM: His Holiness, Pope Gregorious, Thirteenth of that Name, Apostolic Successor to Saint Peter, Supreme Pontiff of Christ's Church, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ
We write to you out of our bountiful love for you, in order to inform you of vicious rumors which have spread throughout Christendom, yea, even to our own ears, whereupon we knew instantly that they were false and slanderous, for Ferdinand of Spain has long been a pious and wise leader, resolute in his faithfulness to God and service to His Church, judicious in speaking, merciful in judgment, and prudent in action. It is for this reason that we are certain that these rumors are false, for they cast you as one who is ignorant of the affairs of the Church and of the world, and we know this to be false, for we know your heart as a father knows his own son.
Therefore, we write you and tell you of things of which we are certain you already know. First and foremost, that the unfortunate bloodshed between Maximilian and Janos Corvinus has long been the subject of our prayers, and that the warring parties, being each excellent men and Christians both, have already approached their Holy Father in private, seeking to resolve their differences like brothers. These proceedings will continue as they have continued. Secondly, as you already know, the ecumenical council of Rome to be held two years hence is a meeting of and for the Church, to address the spiritual issues facing the Body of Christ, particularly with an eye to the reformation of priestly training. It is a meeting of bishops from the east and west, as well as priests and monks, and even a few privileged scholars, such as yourself, will be in attendance. This is the purpose of the Council of Rome.
We know that these rumors and falsehoods will soon disappear, for all Christendom knows the wisdom and piety of Ferdinand. We are constantly in prayer for you, and ask that you pray for the success of the upcoming council. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
