A unit cannot retreat to the province from which the attacker came
Same answer for both of you. You cannot retreat to the territory that the dislodging attack came from (no retreating through the enemy lines). Nor can you retreat to a territory where a standoff took place, even if it is now empty.

While Dover and the newly redubbed Italian Empire were fighting over who would get to kill the last of the Spanish forces, the Compañía de infantería got a rare opportunity to sneak back into Burgundy and prolong their existence, if only for another year. But no, they were resigned to the ultimately inevitable and layed down their arms and disappear or something.
Meanwhile, UBP forces broke into the 1337 capital, only to find no one at home. Only a single sticky note remained reading "Ha ha!" How odd. Anyway, there was plenty of advanced tech lying around that the 1337 didn't seem to scuttle. The UBP happily helped themselves to the new radar systems, targeting computers, and comm devices.
