Blue-Collar Distrust of Obama in the Rust Belt

More like people flying because neighborhoods are becoming poorer. A rich black dude moving into my rich neighborhood(assuming I live in a rich neighborhood) isn't going to make me go anywhere.

I had a friend in the second grade move away because his next door neighbors were black; that's literally what his mother said. That was it.

There's a difference between justified white flight and... that.

But how is that unjustified? People have the right to choose where to live.

People have the right to be racist. That doesn't mean racism is justified, to me anyway.

I'm talking about people moving specifically because the neighborhood is becoming more black, not people moving because there's more crime. Granted, the issues can be intimately connected, but that's what crypto-racism is.

If by 'more black' you mean, "more militant, stressing, made areas uncertain, and inducing overall fear in general", I'll not argue. The history behind White Flight from the 1960s onwards to the 1970s is a lot more complicated than simple crypto-racism.

The issue is indeed more complicated than just racism. The White Flight is just another an over hyped movement that is almost an inherent value of urban areas. It is a guarantee that the well off will leave for the suburbs first chance that major change in demographics change, and is one part of the cycle. Eventually, after many years people, will come back as we see nation under urban renewal projects. This cycle can clearly be seen in London and Paris's history.

This is OT, but in America, White Flight started as a response to school integration, so it very much was about race...white people with money didn't want their kids going to school with black people.

Its a more complicated movement now, but I think most people *vastly underestimate* its effects on cities. It may be a bigger issue than crime

But it's a justified motive to move. You can choose where to live no matter what.

If (actually as) it isn't justified, it's not a justified motive to move. They can choose where to live but doing so on the basis of racism isn't justified. What you say smells a lot of justifying racism.

Wait, are you trying to bring subtle social issues and historical factors into the debate? You naive fool!

Don't trash Downtown. He was the one that got me back into good standing with the ACLU by pointing out that both my hooker and cocaine were from Colombia and my non-elitist methods were just honoring hate-America-first customs. He has also wisely informed me that rednecks don't classify Samuel Adams as a domestic beer either. He's got my vote and the votes of all my dead relatives if he ever decides to run for anything.

Btw, I've noticed that the people who tend to really bent out of shape over the "bitter" type comments are not rust belters.

The ones getting bent out of shape are primarily a bunch of elitists assuming that rust belters are easily offended yahoos that can be swayed and manipulated with out-of-context soundbites.

Rust causes belts to break more easily, not to get bent out of shape. :)

You know, my gun supplier was showing me this nifty thing he picked up the other day. It is a belt buckle (cowboy style, big and round) with a little 2 shot pistol mounted right in the buckle itself. Swear to God. I'd say these would be perfect for these rust belt people obsessed with guns and whatnot.
