Well, a new expansions looms on the horizon and we only have a short amount of time to discuss this.

TSG64 is on July 1st, 65 on July 15th and 66 (the 1st BNW game) on August 1st. After that we have been discussing some options for how to proceed.

Civ5's expansions have been just a bit more than the usual 'more stuff' expansions that other games do. Not only do they they have more civs, buildings, and units, but both included new mechanics that really change the way you used to play. And BNW goes one further by redefining Culture victories (and I think Diplomacy too). It's pretty big with lots to process. Thus, the poll.

My initial plan was to have Leif do the BNW games on the 1st with me doing GnK games on the 15th until I get it. (I'm not typically a guy who buys at launch but after seeing some videos and interviews this might be a rare exception.) But if I get it at launch would you still prefer a slow transition? I was thinking maybe having the following schedule:

66 - Aug 1st - BNW (roughly 3 weeks from release for people to explore the newness of it)
67 - Aug 15th - GnK (playing as a vanilla civ now that we've cycled through them twice)
68 - Sept 1st - BNW
69 - Sept 15th - GnK (same as 67)
70 - Oct 1st - BNW (fully BNW henceforth)

I haven't seen all of the details yet but some of the vanilla/GnK civs might have changes to their UU/UB/UAs (to reflect new game mechanics) and if so, we will be working them in to explore how those changes affect the new gameplay. (Monthar, we will certainly be doing Polynesia again to explore their World Congress potential.) Based on this and 9 new civs, the slate will be cleared sometime mid-2014 when we can just play any civ/setting.

We didn't do a transition for GnK but this is the last expansion for Civ5 (Civ6 likely being the next big thing in the franchise), so rather than just foist this on you we thought a transition phase might be worth exploring. Since we are putting it to a poll, feel free to explain your answer in the thread if you want to.

We will eventually fully transition to BNW, though. We don't do any vanilla rules games anymore and have no intention to bring them back for those who haven't gotten any expansions/DLC.

Thanks,
HR

The poll is open for 30 days. If you'd rather not answer the first 2 it is fine but at least answer one of the last 2 if you'd like to discuss this. There's always a little fallout with any release so I realize we might lose some participants regardless of the poll or our decisions.

I'm all for pure BNW GoTM's. Switching between two different game mechanics every other week would probably mess up my playstyle and game rules could get mixed up. Especially if you decide to throw in any G&K culture victories. But I understand why a transition period would be a good thing and I'm not against doing that if the majority of the GoTM community wants it.

I also dislike switching between the different mechanics. I feel switching between the two would make it harder to learn the new mechanics and hinder our performance with both.

I do understand wanting to have a short transition period to give folks time to get the expansion. However, most folks that don't buy at or near release (during the first month) are typically waiting for the price to drop, which likely won't happen until the winter holiday sales.

Therefore, I feel once we start BNW games, we should only do BNW games.

Once we start BNW, I think we should just stick with it.

Even though I was originally a proponent of split Vanilla and G&K games, things have worked out fine without any more Vanilla games. So I think it will be similar with the shift to BNW. Just give people a bit of time to adjust!

In addition, I expect there will be some patches to correct any issues. So I don't mind a slower transition. Let the patches fix any exploits before we start the GOTM with BNW.

I've already pre-bought BNW. I haven't had much time to read up on BNW yet, but after BNW is out I won't be playing G&K anymore, just like I didn't play vanilla after G&K came out.

Since Polynesia is to be the July 15th GotM civ under G&K rule, how about making them the Aug 1st civ as well so we can see the difference the BNW rules makes with them, while their G&K version is still fresh. Perhaps even make both games cultural so we can see the difference in that VC as well.

i wont be buying BNW at it's release, but i will after 1-2-3 weeks. Switching back and forth between GK and BNW would be annoying for me. As soon as i get BNW i will not go back to GK.

We went through this with Civ III IIRC. We ended up supporting PTW and C3C (and still do 10 years later) - analogous to G&K and BNW. From what I can remember there were issues with mac users upgrading to C3C, but also the PTW scenario file had been expertly modded to play really well and fairly. I don't think either of these considerations exist in ciV. So I think that there should be a 6 month transition where both are offered. The last G&K game should be clearly advertised as such to give people the ability to upgrade - and then we should move on.

I won't be getting BNW until maybe Christmas or sometime next year, so I would definitely like a transition period, so I can play at least half of the GoTM games. But I understand that whoever has BNW will not want to switch - I would be the same if I was planning on buying it immediately.

Since Polynesia is to be the July 15th GotM civ under G&K rule, how about making them the Aug 1st civ as well so we can see the difference the BNW rules makes with them, while their G&K version is still fresh. Perhaps even make both games cultural so we can see the difference in that VC as well.
What do you guys think of this idea?

It sounds intriguing, feedback please. :)

I also agree with the Polynesia idea.

I would like to see only BNW GOTM though from the launch on.
