Well, a new expansions looms on the horizon and we only have a short amount of time to discuss this.
TSG64 is on July 1st, 65 on July 15th and 66 (the 1st BNW game) on August 1st. After that we have been discussing some options for how to proceed.
Civ5's expansions have been just a bit more than the usual 'more stuff' expansions that other games do. Not only do they they have more civs, buildings, and units, but both included new mechanics that really change the way you used to play. And BNW goes one further by redefining Culture victories (and I think Diplomacy too). It's pretty big with lots to process. Thus, the poll.
My initial plan was to have Leif do the BNW games on the 1st with me doing GnK games on the 15th until I get it. (I'm not typically a guy who buys at launch but after seeing some videos and interviews this might be a rare exception.) But if I get it at launch would you still prefer a slow transition? I was thinking maybe having the following schedule:
66 - Aug 1st - BNW (roughly 3 weeks from release for people to explore the newness of it)
67 - Aug 15th - GnK (playing as a vanilla civ now that we've cycled through them twice)
68 - Sept 1st - BNW
69 - Sept 15th - GnK (same as 67)
70 - Oct 1st - BNW (fully BNW henceforth)
I haven't seen all of the details yet but some of the vanilla/GnK civs might have changes to their UU/UB/UAs (to reflect new game mechanics) and if so, we will be working them in to explore how those changes affect the new gameplay. (Monthar, we will certainly be doing Polynesia again to explore their World Congress potential.) Based on this and 9 new civs, the slate will be cleared sometime mid-2014 when we can just play any civ/setting.
We didn't do a transition for GnK but this is the last expansion for Civ5 (Civ6 likely being the next big thing in the franchise), so rather than just foist this on you we thought a transition phase might be worth exploring. Since we are putting it to a poll, feel free to explain your answer in the thread if you want to.
We will eventually fully transition to BNW, though. We don't do any vanilla rules games anymore and have no intention to bring them back for those who haven't gotten any expansions/DLC.
Thanks,
HR
