Boff-02 Behaving Badly

guys before i start playing i would like to suggest some things and have some discussions how to proceed

monty has enough on his hands

and heres the power chart

we serieusly need some military asap and a navy as we dont have any if monty shows up with an army we cant do anything about it

i suggest to revolt to nationalism and drafts some protective muskets, also i want to revolt to theocracy so we get muskets with 1 promotion available

we can trade survy for natio for lib and gunpowder

we also might be able to get survy into war with monty atm its reddened out with the sign were afraid of his military power but if were in war with monty our power is added with survies power so he might be able to be bribed into war when it happens

ill wait with playing till tonight so u all can give youre oppinions about this situation

Does save posting work yet? I'd have to see the current save before I could say anything.

It's guaranteed that Monty will attack us now, and soon, so we need a plan in place. The good thing is that he has to sail to us to attack us, and he's ringed by the other civs, his only ports being to the southwest, where Justinian's lands were.

Hmm... From what I can see... we DO need to crank out a Navy, and we need to do that fast. The idea of drafting Muskets however, doesn't really excite me. Muskets are marginal units at best, since they don't get any bonuses like the longbows before them. We are, however, protective, so that gives us some incentive to use those units, although I believe they're better off Drill promoted than they are sitting in our cities. Longbows do fine as city garrison for now.

We need some boats out there, as Monty only has 2 ports he can sail from, and he'll likely land near Florence. Rifling is queued in 11, but chem costs us 8, and gives us frigates and privateers.

About the tech trades; I'd rather trade with Wang first, as he's behind us in score. And if we're going to do the lopsided trade for nationalism, PLEASE take HBR, his money, and his map too. Might also want to net Econ from Sury if we're releasing Lib and Gunpowder... Although that's probably not a wise trade.

I'd wait for Refar and Liq to comment though... The tech trades make me feel uneasy... as the enemy is not even researching those techs right now.

I dont really like the nationalism trade - giving Gunpowder will unlock them to tech for better units (-> Chemistry, Rifling). Sury will go free speach if he got Liberalism too, boosting his probable move for culture (and we are not in the position for a intervention just yet).

My opinion of drafted muskets is not too good too...

S.ilvers idea of teching of teching Chemistry for better navy isn't bad.

ok ill change our tech to chemistry ill post again if something happens or when im done with my turns :)

rifling and railroads are what we need. the way our island is setup we would be waisting resources guarding everything against monty, we need to shuttle troops back and forth over rails to realistically defend.

Monty is due to attack any time which is why I spammed long bows every turn in my play as to be honest they are as good as muskets when it comes to city defense.

A dominant monty is never a good thing so this game is going to be interesting. A strong sury is no problem because he lags on combat techs as a rule.

In general when monty does attack, expect to lose a town and just save game and post it. Taking the town back will be trivial enough btw once we know where monty is massing his troops.

Cheers!

turn 4
checking for trades i make the following trades:

i clicked to fast and forgot to record the trade with justi
i traded lib and optics (he was researching it and the only AI without it) for natio and 100g

i stop playing now for some discusions once again :p
we can do some civic switches now:
free market is open now as is nationalism also revolting to theocracy would make sense as we switched to military builds we can start a golden age with the GP's on our Gp farm :p so we dont take the anarchy. Ill play the rest of my turns after we discussed this. Im sorry for taking alot of time for these turns but i dont wanna screw this up and making civic changes seems like a reasonable reason to stop playing.

Switching to Theocracy makes sense, but I wouldn't use the engineer's for a golden age, we need to save one for the corporation. Did you switch to chemistry for the frigates? I would make a few more Longbows and start cranking out the navy. We should focus on getting the corp, settling the island and preparing for Monty.

One GE is enought for Corps. No reason to park 2 of them indefinitely.

We have two GE, and we clearly do not have a shot for SoL, so burining one on a GA is possible (another is needed for Corp). It's by far not my favourite use for a GE, but might make sense right now.
It will allow a Anarchy Free Switch (maybe two times - one at the beginning and one on the end of the GA), should shave a turn or two from Chemistry and maybe enother tech...

At any rate, we don't want that spare GE to grow old on that farm. Keeping one with a purpose in mind is fine - like for the corps. But just parking one so we "might use him on a Wonder, Maybe, Sometime..." is a bit :smoke: - the sooner we use him, the longer we can benefit from it. Does not mean he must be used right now, but we should at least have a plan for him. If none comes to mind - GA or settling him is just fine.

-----

On civics. I am not convinced with the Nationalism thingie... No one seem to love those drafted Muskets anyway. I would prefer economic civics, which might be:

Mercantilism + Free Speech.

Merkantilism over Free Market because:
We only trading with WK now, and we are giving more then we are getting (We get 40:commerce: from him and he 55 from us.) With 13 Cities Mercantilism is easily worth those 40 commerce + We can settle the last planed fillers.

Even if AI start switch out of Mercantilism... Who we are going to trade with ? WK and Justi are Montis vassals. So if Monty is indeed coming for us (And iven if he does not now, doe we have any doubt that he will soon enought), the OB with them will be gone.
If monty is coming for Sury first - all the same - we will be on his war next.

As it is i don't see any good perspective for foreighn trade...
And with our Courthosuses we can run Merc+Corporations at the same price tag as FreeMarket+Corp in regular games + keeping those free Specialists.

Free Speach will boost towns. We dont have too many, should still be worth ~30 raw :commerce:. Natinalism will allow us to draft some units, but does not do a lot (like nothing) for the economy. Which economic civics we should be able to speed up our tech - it is not like we are too clear leader.

Theocracy is fine i guess, if we are in GA anyway... We probably don't want to go Free Religion, because it's 10% will not offset the lost the Sankore Beakers.

ill continue my turnset in 2 hours ill use 1 GE for a golden age and switch to merc and theo im not too convinced on free speech so ill leave that to the next player to decide as ill ed my turnset in a golden age

if we switch to merc permanently we should make a colony on fake mao island so we still get oversea trade

I will not insist on FreeSpeach. It will give us a few extra :science:, but we will also loose some :hammers: in the capital.

I agree with not keeping the GE for "just in case we want a wonder", I just hate using them for GA's but you're right I can't really think of something we have a great shot at.

I'm not a hard pusher of free speech, but we've gone CE and we have quite a few mature cottages on the western coast. They would get quite a boost from that, and I'm not a big fan of Bureau anyways... (that is the civic we'd be switching out right?). I was going to suggest it earlier, but if we can save it for a GA, all the better.

turn 4 (continues)
i use 1 GE for a golden age and switch to theo + free speech + merc

i end my turnset now this is the last turn of golden age so if needed we can still make a civic swap rifling is due in 2 i suggest taking steel next for much needed drydocks. We have 3 privateers now heading for monty and WK. We are producing 5 more privateers also. i think our military has improved alot now

Yea military looks a lot better - you can see the improvement of the last few turns.
Monthy is still on the roll tho... Lets hope it is his usuall outdated army.

Deploy the pirvateers in stack of two or three please, since the AI already has Galleons - this greatly increases they chances of survival. Besides having multiple units to cover each other - while the AI will often pounder with everything on a lone Pirvateer, they hesitate to attack a stack - even a small one - i guess the evalueation of success chances works different for stacks.

Mao-island was bad luck. But well... Settle the last fillers on our homeland instead... And when the situation allows it we can try to take the island from WK/Sury later...

ooo eh not sure who is up.. It's very very difficult for me to sit at the pc currently so just pass liq, whoever wants to fish for a roster go for it ehehe.

well whoever hasn;t played in a while can pick the game up I guess... gonna lay back down.

Cheers!
