245bc, turn 157, inherited turn
Liq says we'll be at war with Alex sooner rather than later, and he has ordered 5 defensive units from barc to Seville. Seville is working on walls, 19 turns but we'll whip. It could use another axe or two in addition to the defensive troops that are on their way there already.
Barcelona's defenses have been weakened because of the redeployment. Its garrison now consists of three archers. England has a bunch of troops on or heading to our border. I count two swords, three axes, a spear, an archer, and a galley in/near Nottingham. I think Barc needs some axe defenders as well.
Therefore, once current builds in Barc and Madrid finish, I'll build axes for defense. I worry most that Churchill will DOW along with Alex.
In other news, our tech rate is 40%, and we have 7 turns left for math at +0gpt.
Madrid, Barc, and Seville are all one above happy cap. Cordoba and Toledo are 4 above happy cap. Every city is well above health cap.
Hannibal is at +7 to us, pleased.
Zara is at -1, cautious.
Alex is at -3, annoyed.
Churchill is at +2, cautious.
230bc
Toledo's culture expands.
215bc
Our peace treaty with hannibal expires.
Churchill adopts hereditary rule.
Toledo grows to size 3, still working on its courthouse.
I dial up Churchill to see if there is any resource we could trade (and maybe thereby delay the onset of hostilities). We could give him the gold resource, but he has nothing to give us. And we don't have currency yet so we can't sell the resource to him.
200bc
Phew. No war yet.
Hannibal adopts organized religion.
Christianity is founded in a distant land, probably zara.
Churchill is up to 3 swords, 3 axes, 1 spear, 2 arachers in Nottingham.
185bc
Another sigh of relief, as Churchill remains peaceful for another turn. And actually, he sent three units north out of Nottingham towards London and away from us.
Zara adopts theocracy.
Barc: courthouse > axe, 3 turns
Our re-deployed defenders reach seville and fortify. That city has 5 archers and 1 axe as its garrison now. And it's a good thing, too, because...
...alex's army has arrived. He has brought 3 swords, 1 phalanx, and 1 spear, all with 2 promotions. If he declares next turn, I don't think our jungle chops will finish, as I'll have to retreat the workers. I cancel their actions so that I can control them manually next turn and save them if necessary.
I switch to slavery and 2-pop whip the walls in seville.
170bc
We're still at peace. Alex's stack has disappeared back into the darkness in zara's land.
Zara converts to christianity, and he has the holy city.
Seville finishes its walls. Our city defense bonus is 50% now, and that bodes well for us as I did not see any seige units in alex's stack a turn ago.
Seville resumes its queued courthouse, but I insert a 5-turn axe in the queue first.
After the whip, Sevilled is 1 under the happy cap, with growth in 4 turns. I'll let it grow and then stagnate it by hiring two scientists.
The workers nearby finish their jungle chops.
A jungle grows near toledo.
Cordoba grows to size 4. It has room under caps to grow some more before we slow it by working a second gold mine.
Madrid: settler > axe, 4 turns.
The settler heads to red dot.
155bc
We get a great prophet in Madrid and build the shrine. Our gpt jump to +9. I bump the tech rate up a notch to 50%, and we're at +3gpt now.
Madrid fires its priest and works a mine. It has +5 food surplus and will grow to its happy cap next turn. It can only hire priest specs for now, so I think it'll pump out a settler after it finishes its axe (3 turns left) to control its growth.
140bc
I set research to currency, 19 long turns at 50%.
Barc: axe > axe, 3 turns
Say hello to red dot, henceforth to be known as Santiago.
It gets on a 45 turn monument.
Currency drops a turn to 18 turns with Santiago's founding, but we go to -2gpt. We can handle 12 turns at that rate of loss, so I don't adjust the slider just yet.
Madrid grows to size 9. Growth again in 5 turns, and we're at our happy cap now. Founding Santiago was a -5 gpt hit to our economy, and I think twice about founding another city right away. So instead of a settler after its current axe (2 turns), I think I'll have madrid start a library, and then we'll whip it. That'll reduce population and also give us the ability to hire specs other than priests in the city to slow its growth.
125bc
Churchill asks for open borders, and I decline. He stays at +2 to us.
I take cordoba off the corn and give the corn to santiago. I think we'll need to whip the monument there, and so I'm looking for some quick growth in the new city.
110bc
Toledo and Seville grow.
Seville: axe > queued courthouse. I delay the courthouse again by inserting another axe (9 turns). We're at the happy cap now, with growth in 8 turns and whipping unhappiness ending in 10. I hire a scientist to slow the growth to 24 turns.
Toledo is still ok. Working gems, wheat, copper, and marble, all improved except the marble, whose quarry has 7 turns to completion.
Madrid: axe > library, which we'll whip next turn
The axe heads to Barc.
95bc
Barc: axe > axe
Counting the axe from madrid that will arrive next turn, Barc now has 3 axes and 3 archers for defense. Churchill has 4 swords and 3 axes on our border, plus a spear and an archer. I dial another axe to be safe.
We are at -4gpt, and I'll probably won't queue up any more troops. I knock the tech rate back down to 40%, and we go to +2gpt, with currency due in 16 turns.
Confucianism (that's alex) spreads in seville.
Madrid 3-pop whips its library.
80bc
Madrid: library > courthouse in 11 turns, with growth back to happy cap in 3 turns
65bc
Ok. So be it.
Bug tells me that alex will trade construction, but I don't see any cats in his stack. Just the three swords, the phalanx, and the spear that he had before. Seville has walls, 2 archers, and 5 axes on defense. We should be ok.
50bc
Barc: axe > missionary
Its garrison has 4 axes and 3 archers, and I feel safe enough against england.
Our gpt is now -3 at 40%.
I see another greek phalanx inbound. I consider whipping the axe in seville, but i don't do so.
35bc
Alex's stack attacks. Our units win 4 battles and lose 1.
I promote a wounded axe to combat 1 to heal him, and then he easily finishes off the wounded greek sword.
The late-arriving greek phalanx seems to be taking the southern route, and it's possible that he could slip by seville and head to toledo, where we have only a warrior waiting for him. Since seville is safe, for now, I move a 0xp archer and an axe out to try to cut him off.
Madrid grows to its happy cap. I slow its growth by working a village instead of the corn. It'll still grow again in 9 turns, 2 turns before whipping unhappiness goes away. I guess when we get closer to that point, I'll put 2 turns into a settler before finishing the courthouse.
20bc and 5bc
I was so wrapped up in cutting off that greek phalanx that I snoozed on logging the turn. The phalanx attacked our 0xp archer on open grass, killing him. Our axe then finished the phalanx off. I think that was a good use for a 0xp unit. Better than just disbanding him.
There are now no more greek units in sight.
I dial Alex, looking for peace, but he has nothing to say to me.
Hindu spreads to Santiago, so that's one less missionary for us to build.
Barc: missionary (heads toward seville) > lighthouse, 6 turns
I put madrid on a settler for purple dot now, as our economy seems to be swinging positive again. With the loss of only two units, we've gone up to +3 at 40%. And two courthouses are due to finish within 5 turns.
Ok. I guess that's a good place to end it.
We're still at war with Alex. We've killed 6 metal units and lost 2 archers so far. We've got a very wounded axe (0.3 health in the jungle on our border with zara who needs to scamper back home to rest. I think I'll name him: Wilson.
Since Madrid is building a settler for purple dot, maybe barc should build a missionary to have one ready for when the city is founded. Barc just started its lighthouse this turn, so no hammers are invested yet.
We have a ton of jungle to remove. No shortage of projects for our workers.
Finally, we are still in slavery. Maybe we should get our last whips in and switch back out?
This was a fun set.
