Leopold II

Since Belgium is not in, he is using the symbol of one of the new civs

Ah, good, so I am looking at the right civ. I stand by that the symbol kinda looks like a human, or like a stylized animal hide from native american culture. More like the former than the latter, though.

Shame Belgium's not in.

I'm guessing it could be the lion from Belgium's coat of arms, maybe not.

Whatever it is, I can't say for certain it's yellow - it could be color compression messing up the color.

Although I should slow down... while in some scenarios civs that aren't in have had their symbols replaced, some have custom symbols in some scenarios. Perhaps this is just a custom symbol for Belgium (got too excited, I think this is the most logical actually)

False Alarm...

Not the new civ symbol, there was a bigger picture out there of it. While it wasn't the Roman symbol... it was a retooled Dutch symbol for Leopold. My bad guys

Yea, I think that's exactly what it is. ...still, honestly, I'd love if Belgium was one of the two new civs.

Oddly Belgium is on the civ list but I can't find it on the map, whilst Zulu seems to be on the map but not met?

I see Belgium its the island off the coast of where Gabon is or more precisely lower left of the German city in modern day Cameroon

Looking at the pt numbers I dont think Belgium or 2 of the other unmet players start on the map as such (4pts each)

As I said in the other thread, I find it odd that every civ icon is unchanged from its original, except for Leopold's. That's certainly not Venice's icon, and that lion looks quite different from the Dutch one.

It's Belgium's lion, just with an odd color choice. Nothing odd about the icon beyond the colors.

Belgium probably starts with some settlers in the Congo area.

Looking at the map, it seems to be set in the mid 19th century. At that time, the Europeans only had colonies and trading centres on the coast and had not yet moved into the interior. Congo was, because of its nature, the last area that was looked at by colonists - hot, tropic and disease.

It was Leopold II in 1876 who 'organized the International African Association with the cooperation of the leading African explorers and the support of several European governments for the promotion of African exploration and colonization.[Wikipedia]'

This is probably the start point for the Scramble for Africa scenario.

Belgium probably settled on one of the two islands north of Madagascar with the other island being settled by England

Why does he have to be using the symbol of a new civ? He could just be using a symbol solely for the scenario.

Which he probably is, given that that symbol does represent his country.

It's probably just a scenario specific icon. Kinda like how Normandy, Norway and the Anglo-Saxons have unique icons in the 1066 scenario.
