I watched the new Bridge to Terabithia movie a few days ago and I loved it! Although I’ve never read the book and I figure they must be a lot different, because the book was made in the 70s and the movie was made this year.

Anyway, it seems the movie intentionally makes it unclear whether the relationship between Jess and Leslie’s relationship is romantic or platonic, although it seems rather romantic to me.

What do you think, is it romantic or platonic?

P.S. I have an embarrassing confession to make. If you’re going to read it at all, please read the end.
Spoiler :
I’m 14. When I was watching the movie I felt a little attracted to Leslie due to her happy, imaginative personality, colourful clothes, eyes, and hair. Then today I looked at Bridge To Terabithia on Wiki and it said the character Leslie is f**king 10! I was like WTH! She doesn’t look 10!:mad: But fortunately I found out the actress who plays her is only 1 year younger than me, proving once and for all I’m no freakin’ pedo.

The fact that you are attracted to someone of acceptable age doesn't mean you are not attracted to someone of an unacceptable age.

THere was something, but its a kids film so nothing could happen, aswell as the age the characters are meant to be playing.

Im 20, but can tell you that girl is going to become a very attractive woman.

anyway if you want to know, she also played as the girl from Charlies Chocolate Factory. (you know the one that got bubble gum in her hair)

I've taught the book on quite a few occasions to middle school classes; I don't think nor feel there is any mutual romance going on. Leslie would like it to be, but Jess has eyes elsewhere.

It just seems somewhat tawdry to reduce the story to a matter of tumbling.

I do hear they have fiddled a little with the film.

Drool Strikes!
Wiki's article about Bridge To Terabithia said:
Jess Oliver Aarons Jr. - An artistic boy, fearful of doing courageous things. But through Terabithia, Leslie gives him courage. Jesse is extremely angry and depressed before Leslie comes into his life. Even when they are together, he is still distressed. By the end of the book, he learns to let go of his frustration. He has a crush on his music teacher and a bigger one on Leslie, though he tends not to show that he fancies her, probably because it would increase the amount of gossip that says he and Leslie are a couple, although this is technically true.
Leslie Burke - A smart, talented and outgoing girl. Her talents include gymnastics, creativity, swimming, and running. Jesse Aarons thinks highly of her, and they are best friends. She is not socially accepted by the other students in Jesse's school, to which she is a newcomer. She had a crush on Jesse, though unlike Jesse, she doesn't hide it, nevertheless nothing overly romantic happens between them.

The wikipedia article I am looking at says that she was born in 1993.

Did anybody see the oooooooooooold movie of ti. the 1 hour one intended for schools. I did in 3rd grade. Leslie looked like a guy. Also i never saw the new one. Isn't leslie supposed to be unatractive in te book.

The wikipedia article, suprisingly enough, is wrong in this respect - it reads too much into the attitude of Jess and his feelings for Leslie. It may be difficult to comprehend a deep friendship and love without crushes being involved, but it used to be possible.

Yup, I started reading the book last night and I'm about halfway through. In the book it says Leslie's unattractive and she looks like a boy in the illistrations. Also, Jess doesn't seem to have any interest in Leslie, but Leslie may have a little something for Jess. I'd say there's something romantic between them in the movie but not the book.

I read the book in elementary school-about 5 years ago, and only remember the gist of it. I didn't see the movie, which looks unbelievably different from the book-there were no castles or monsters there, they just pretended they were the rulers of Terabithia, which was just a few trees. There was NOTHING between them, they were much too young.

well it's a movie, what would you expect?

I would expect trying to vaguelly follow the plot rather than naffing about and inserting subtexts with all the restraint of an atavistic cannibal in an unattended maternity ward. It is too much to ask these days, I know, but it is a dream I have.
