Not about overflow , but I used the build beaker option to good effect the other day.. I had a continent to myself, after Vasselizing( Vaselineing) two other civs, and wanted to go for a diplomatic victory. I built military in two cites, and research in all others. Thats about 20 cities building beakers. This was to beeline to the UN. Once I got Mass Media I turned off research and built wealth in those cities to make 9000 gold to buy the UN with the help of Universal Sufferage . This saved me 50 turns (on Marathon speed) . Then I tried to bribe my target on the other continent, but the gold seemed to make no difference. Civic matching, and Voting in Free Religion is what did it.
I did manage to get my diplomacy target civ to attack the space race builder with a massive 6000 gold bribe. In Vanilla, turning off research would give you gold/turn, but in Warlords you get a lot more if you also build it.
Also I had a great shrine city, Bombay, bringing in 25 gold/turn. It was being swamped by culture from my vassal. ( note to self: dont let that happen.)
I built culture there and set the city to max production. it was the only thing that saved it from being lost. It went from 5% Cartheginian and slowly climbed up to 12 % or so. Note: This is the shrine city for an entire continent, with all cites converted. The same gold/turn can be built with just 1 good production city.
I'm happy with the strat because it's better than building a lot of things you dont need in the late game. I personally dont like modern wars and I get annoyed that all the work I put into making good cities is kind of wasted. Building research or wealth or culture means at least they are contributing to the chosen victory condition.
