June 22, 1941. The Reich has begun its massive invasion of the Soviet Union. The Axis currently controls all of Europe, save for the Thrace, controlled by the Republic of Turkey. We have a non-aggression pact with the Axis powers, and we are certainly no friend of the Russians, but the troubling reality is that nothing could stop Italian aggression against us should the Soviet military break down. The Germans and Italians see us Turks as a third-rate power that could never so much as even tarnish their plans for global domination. Hence, republican soldiers invading through Rumania and relieving pressure from southern Soviet forces would be gravely unexpected and might make a difference in this world war.

Such a plan is so bold and ambitious, that we must be meticulous in its planning and strike boldly.

The cabinet of the republic.

The first country that Turkey must defeat is Bulgaria. This is problematic, for most of their forces are concentrated in mountainous and hilly lands that will require a tremendous amount of resources and casualties in order to occupy. Therefore, our war plan will be to surround the core of Bulgaria, causing them them to outstretch their lines of infantry, and then force a breakthrough to reach their capital city. We will then highly fortify their western mountainous regions to prevent offensives from German-occupied Greece and Yugoslavia, while we prepare for our incursion into Rumania.

Operation Şâhin Paşa

Our primary target here is Varna, as their open airport will allow us to reposition our aerial forces in order to use reconnaissance to find breaks in the Bulgarian lines, while controlling their seaport will be important for supplying our armies.

The invasion of Bulgaria is ready; August 22, 1941

By the end of September, the war goes better than planned. The Bulgarians had some difficulties mobilizing and thus were unable to secure the southern mountainous regions. Therefore, simultaneous with the capture of Varna, the Bulgarians have set themselves up for an encirclement upon the loss of Samokov.

Major tip for warfare: make sure your men are well-led. For example I see a blank face commanding that unit in Samokov; replace him with someone else (with a skill level or two) if you can.

Nice, a Hearts Of Iron 3 aar:goodjob:

I'll make one myself probably, when a patch or 2 more has been released (I think now they just need to sort out some of the Germans AI in terms of when it goes to war with countries and sort the American Ai so they are better at invasions and troop movement, and maybe tweek the Japan/Chinese situation a bit more).

Not played as Turkey yet, am intrested to see how this goes! You planning to align to any particular faction? Anyone trying to influence you yet?

Also make sure you re-enact your laws to get the best results! Switching from a volounter army is a must when at war!

YEAH!! HOI3 aar, was waiting for one :P

Creepily, my first HoI3 game was as Turkey. Good luck! :D

October. The Germans have mobilized seven divisions in order to open a new flank against us. Despite their qualitative advantage in almost every field, we have heavily fortified central Greek mountains, causing their offensives to be (at the moment) failures. While I had hoped to make it all the way to Rumania, this perhaps is going to be the extent of our offensive. Nevertheless, we have successfully diverted a significant amount of Axis troops from the Soviet front, so we have accomplished our objective for now. If the Germans withdraw, then we will march further north. Until then, we have to protect what we have and prevent Istanbul from falling at all costs.

By mid-October, the German offense against Serres, the first line of defense in central Greece, has halted. The Allies still have not accepted us into their circle -- likely out of poor sentiments from the Great War -- so we stay politically isolated. Hopefully we will be an official member before the new year, as the resources will be necessary at that point.

By early November, Bulgaria is reduced to a Rorschach-shape blob with its morale shattered, its primary cities occupied, all of their strategic points fallen and only a matter of time before they surrender. More German divisions have arrived but they have not achieved a breakthrough quite yet.

Strategic thoughts: the moment Bulgaria surrenders, I could potentially try a pincer movement to encircle the Reich's divisions in Greece, though quite honestly I'm afraid to do so. Encirclement is the only possible way the Turkish army could ever succeed in an offense against the far superior German troops, and our soldiers would shatter if they're attacked prior to achieving the objective.

Strategic options following the surrender of Bulgaria.

Blue:
Turkish-Axis borders.
Yellow: Minimum defense lines against Germany, should they divert more soldiers.
Violet: Operation Reşid Mehmed Pasha - a pincer strike following by a naval siege in order to encircle the German soldiers.
Green: Initial targets in an invasion of Rumania. While not quite as ambitious as the Turkish war plan against Bulgaria, it allows a fast withdrawal in case the German front collapses.

Since you're playing from the Barbarossa start, I dunno if you can encircle many German divisions with a mostly-infantry army. Still, it's nice and daring, if loony. Daring is good. :)

When is the best time to start troop mobilization while playing as the French?

"There's an o'erhanging castle in which there flows a main,
And there within that castle a fish its home hath ta'en;
The fish within its mouth doth hold a shining gem,
Which wastes the fish as long as it therein doth remain."

- Ottoman Sultan Murad IV

November is a critical month, as it presents to us a possible reversal in our fortunes.

Firstly, following a fierce debate in the high command, it was decided that instead of annihilating the Bulgarian Army, what will be done is to let them retreat into Rumania via Pleven. Firstly, the amount of supplies and morale lost means that these divisions will likely pose no great threat to us once the Bulgarian government surrenders. Secondly, Rumania will suddenly face a logistical problem, having 150,000 unarmed men fleeing into their country. Thirdly, it will likely take a great deal of time before an Axis offensive can be made from the north; this time will have to be used in order to reposition our forces, as well as to repel the Germans as they attack from Greece.

The 17th comes, and two things happen at this point. One is an attempted breakout by the Bulgarians to pierce the Turkish lines and escape utter encirclement, and it is directed at all fronts. Perhaps they are gambling on the notion that our invasion is losing momentum and our gains are unsustainable -- either way, the sudden bounce in their morale is dangerous to our overall plans.

In addition, Churchill has invited the Republic of Turkey to become an official member of the Allies. Hopefully the Empire will dispatch a few divisions to the Balkans, though we cannot count on this. Nevertheless the incoming supplies will be crucial for the years to come.

Finally, the Germans have so far mobilized eight divisions into Greece. While they have less than a third of the soldiers that we do, their far superior order-of-battle and technology could easy result in a blitz to Istanbul. I think we can safely say that we have accomplished our objective of diverting crucial manpower away from the invasion of the Soviet Union and toward us. I imagine that when the messenger arrived at the Führer's office, bringing news that the armies that stormed France and Russia were driven back by republican upstarts in the backwater of Europe, he was shocked; and spent a good ten seconds in startled silence, before choking the words past his teeth, "but can they do that?"

while totally ignorant of the game , aren't we in Berlin yet ?
