Carthaginian, why do you send me your little barbarian friends instead fighting yourself? Are you a coward? I was about to offer you a peace treaty, but many Romans have suffered your crimes, so I cannot not forgive. Your towns shall be reduced to ashes and your people will be condemned to labor in the salt mines. You shall be my servant, and you will work until you forgive your name.

I shall destroy you!

The capture of Miletus, 210 B.C.

Persian forces, lead by Darius himself, approached the town with a superior force, confident of victory. Still they were prepared for a long and difficult battle, expecting a large Macedonian force to defend it.

Imagine the surprise the had when they found the down virtually undefended, only by a hoplite and a horseman! The town was easily secured, only by the cost of one piece heavy cavalry.

Persian intelligence suggest the town garrison fled as soon as they saw the overwhelming Persian force.
