C3C PBEM : "Yap" - WWII pacific scenario PBEM (level : newbees)

Extra! Extra!

News just in from Handkow.

Two Chinese Light Tank Divisions stage sneak attack behind Japanese lines. 4 conscript Japanese infantry divisions were caught off guard just beyond the outskirts of Hangkow. All were masacred in their sleep and the 4 artillery divisions they were guarding were slaughtered as they ran away in confusion. Both Tank divisions limped back to base and were promoted to the elite home guard in honour of their brilliant victory. Chinese forces gathered up the abandoned artillery and moved them into the city through a backroad which the Japanese siege forces had left unguarded. When the Japanese awoke in the morning, they were pounded with their own artillery. Chinese defenders celebrated in joy as they looked down from the city wall on the bloodied wounded Japanese who lay strewn all over the battlefield.

Their joy was short, however, as Mao's communist forces used the opportunity to stage their own sneak attack from within the city blowing up the entire Kuomintang leadership in their command bunker. The remaining outnumbered and badly battered Chinese forces were convinced to join with the communist guerillas and the new People's Defense Committee conscripted all men and women to help defend the city. Mao dimantled the banks and other capitalistic infrastructure in the name of the People and used the resources to further the revolution. In honour of his good friend and benefactor, the city was renamed Stalingrad. Mao pledges that no matter what the technical or numerical advantage of the imperialistic force laying siege, Stalingrad will not fall! I think he means it.

Poised for attack, Commonwealth forces in the Pacific nervously await the orders to engage the enemy.

Meanwhile on the outskirts of Bangkok, Commonwealth ground troops have been issued pamphlets which will enable our brave fighting boys to differentiate between the base, animalistic features of the Japanese savage and the proud, distinguished characteristics of our valiant Chinese allies.

"I wanna save all me bullets for Tojo and not waste them on tha chinks", says Private Digger Barnes, "In fact I'm sick of waitin', stone the crows lets get into it!"

Private Barnes has been issued new orders and is currently on extended latrine duty.

Hey guys, I wonder if somebody could clear up the rules regarding re-loading. So far I've been operating under the assumption that no reloading is allowed at all.

I'm just wondering what happens if you need to restart your PC or go out in the middle of a turn - are you allowed to save it at the point you're up to and reload it from there? (but not from the start of the turn)

The Japanese turns take 45-60 minutes, so it could be an issue.

I don't as a rule reload :nono:
The re-loading rule is to stop cheating ... so I've got no problem if you save as you go.

But thinking about it, how would anyone know anyway?
It really comes down to a trust issue and so I think that redo is (ok if you follow the same moves) and it is used primarily if you forget to do something that is an intrinsic human error :cringe: and not related to an error in stratergy.
ie. to be used if you forget to do something important eg. correct a revolting city, etc.

What do others think?

Regards :goodjob:

Wish I knew that before. I've made loads of movement errors in this game. My mouse is broken and I've been using the touchpad - not exactly ideal for civ!

Reloading is not allowed to avoid cheating. Especially to try new strategies, discover weak points and redo lost combats.
Then it is definitely forbidden. Now it is possible to see wether it has been done but except for the "contest" and except for the case where someone is obviously cheating it is more of a gentleman's rule.

Now I have done it sometimes when I forgot something or discovered a rule I was not familiar with in a scenario (ie in ToS a transport could not hold my 3-marine army so I had to redo and load only 2).

You cannot save during the PBEM turn so it is better to do it only when you are pretty sure you will have the time to finish it. And if you have to reload, just redo the orders exactly as you did them (if you prepared a loss report, it should help a lot). But don't do it too often. The rule is don't reload but it does not have to be NEVER do it.
And if you like to reload a lot to win all your battles, PBEMs are not for you, just keep on fighting and cheating vs the computer.

My 2 cents, as requested by fe3333au.

Just my thoughts ... I'm a Noobie after all :mischief: ...
and I've not had the need to reload ... only when I forgot to change tech but by the time I remembered ... I'd already sent the save on to the next player :cringe: ...

Guess we'll wait for Loulong or someone ... :coffee:

But again as far as I'm concerned ... we are all playing a game and if someone cheats they're only cheating themselves ... and Karma will get them ...

Regards :goodjob:

EDIT : Wow that was quick Loulong :D

im against reloading. i've accidently sent some wrong orders to some of my troops and never considered reloading. in war you NEVER make all the right decisions. and mistakes are supposed to be made. i neve even turn my pc off, so having to leave mid turn shouldn't be a problem, just leave the pc on. use alt+esc if you need to minimize civ3 and do something else on your pc.

Pacific Coast Watch has noted movement with the Dutch Forces stationed in the Pacific.

British High Command has issued orders for another pamphlet to be air-dropped to all Commonwealth forces in the Pacific.

Private Barnes, who is still enjoying extended latrine duty offers no comment.

Played and sent. I killed three CA's, two near Manikawe and one South of Saigon. At least I think that's where they were...

Yamamoto : Great Emperor, our probing of Chinese defences has not yielded great success - I must urge you - that strategy will need be re-considered. In addition, the extent of the Commonwealth drive into our South-East Asian holdings is also becoming clear and needs to dealt with swiftly.

Emperor Hirohito : You are a wise General Yamamoto, fight this war your way. We will return to the Chinese menace in time.

Yamamoto (bows) : Thank you.

Field Report, April 1942

China

Roads near Stalingrad were bombed.

A Chinese worker was killed near Kunming.

Railway near Kunming was destroyed.

Commonwealth

Commonwealth troops advancing on Bangkok were bombed. A Comm. Interceptor was shot down near Bangkok.

Two Comm. Destroyers near Saigon were bombed.

Destroyed a Commonwealth submarine near Kudat.

Destroyed submarine near Saigon. I think it was Commonwealth but reading Gnarfflinger’s forum entry maybe it was Dutch.

Apart from the "reloading" issue that I hope is clear for everyone (Don't do it !), I wanted to commend you guys as this PBEM seems to be moving pretty fast AND you really show the spirit of it with your narratives/reports/pictures !

Maybe next time I might take the Japs. Hawklord would attest that I'm no master...

Empire Hotel - a pub somewhere in Melbourne, Australia

Jack "Who ordered the mixed grill?"
*Wolf Whistle
Jake "leave off you blokes"
Dave "Ha like the new look, Jack"
Jack looks down at the white frilly apron he's wearing.
Jake "Damn ... been in the kitchen all day"
Pulls at the apron which is now knotted, gives up and pours Dave a beer.
Dave "Whats ..."
Jake "Don't ask ... Cheryl's gone and joined the women's land army ... so I've had to do her job"
Dave "Cheers"
Someone "Give us a kiss luv"
Jake "Right-O, the next bloke who says anything will get a flamin hidin' ... now shutup or get out"
A silence settles ... and slowly discipates to the usual ***** and clink of glass against glass.

Operation Bangkok Liberation has had a setback when expected troops failed to arrive. Messengers sent to Singapore fail to return, so the ground units from Rangoon and Bhuket consisting mainly of green recruits have dug in on the outskirts of the city. Air and land bombardment continue to rain down and injure the Japanese defenders in the city. 2 units of Commonwealth troops were lost prior to attack orders being rescinded.

Don't sweat it. The Auto censor would make talking about the Declaration of Independence sound dirty whenever you refer to John Hancock...

Edit: Never mind, I thought it would show as John Han****...

China

I've lost Kaifeng to China - but there's no report on it here??

Limping back from the less than triumphant Chinese campaign, Commander Susan Ivanova and her battalion of all-female light tanks check in for some hard earned R'n'R. The Emperor has decreed all her troops be pleasured with double happiness in order to replenish their crazy great tactics and super power attacks.

Japanese forces bombed Hangkow, destroyed temple and granary. Bombed Kunming and roads around the city. Bombed Nanning and roads around the city.

Netherlands

Destroyed Dutch CA near Davao. Lost one CA in the attack.

Destroyed Dutch DD near Saigon.

Commonwealth

Japanese forces bombed Kudat.

Bombed two CA near Kuala Lumper. Destroyed one of them, left the other redlined.

Killed one infantry near Bangkok

.....meanwhile, we hear rumours of dark forces gathering in the Pacific

Delayed Chinese report.

Aerial recognisance revealed that Kaifeng was only defended by conscripts. China bombarded the city with artillery and then attacked with light tanks. 8 Japanese conscripts were killed and one airplane was destroyed when the city was taken. 3 Chinese light tanks were lost.
