My point is not about building them or not. Me too, there are games when I don't build a single tower or civil defense. I'm not touching the issue about their utility, but questioning the reason they removed a compulsory tech that opens the next era and demands a distinct way of research (Sci Method - Atomic Theory - Eletronics - Radio) in favour of non-compulsory techs or whatever is the reason.
Because you will have to research both ways to get into Modern, the Eletronics way and the Corporation way. I particularly research Sci Method first so I pre-build ToE, get Atomic Theory and Eletronics (two expensive ones) and guarantee the Hoover Dam to my civ.
The absence of Radio won't change the way I play, and I wonder how it would change the way many others play. It was just unnecessary, and now Industrial Ages will go faster (as Alexman stated above) since it's one less compulsory tech to research. I don't want to start a case on this change, and I don't think it's the most important thing of the game of course, I just think it didn't need to happen. Just let the industrial tech tree there, it's great the way it is.
Now with a needless change, we have a new small bug in which your civilization starts the game with Radio. Just because it was decided that the tech is useless and should be removed.
There are many other issues in which the developers should be paying attention instead of this. Don't do changes that doesn't bring benefits. That's just my opinion, I don't have any interest in reduce the "length" of the Industrial Age.
