Seaside? Tillamook? Cannon Beach?

Well, as explained to me on the Mac forum here, Civ III Complete for Mac currently sometimes gets confused which path to follow to look for some files which can make mods crash or not work. The upcoming Mac patch is supposed to remedy this weirdness and unpredictability, so I expect this bug will be remedied by that. It sure doesn't appear to be any kind of design or location flaw.

So, what I did in order to play the game to the end was make sure I talked to everyone and made embassies with everyone else and then never pulled up the Embassy screen again once I'd met the Eoganachts. I just wanted to be able to do military alliances with others and was able to.

The Eoganachts got their revenge though. Apparently they found the Grail around 500 A.D. while I was busy wiping out the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes and had my Great Knight looking for the grail on that little island up to the NW corner. So, a Knight has to walk across the tile the Grail is on to find it. I was wondering...is the AI motivated to intentionally look for it, or does it just start building the special Knights and might accidentally find it? It would be frustrating to play again and lose that way. I SO won that game otherwise, and on Emperor.

It's a fun play and beautifully done though. Thanks again for the great work. I wish I could play with the same setup only on new/random maps. Any way to easily make that possible in another mod version?

Beverly Beach, which is about 5 miles north of Newport.

Glad to hear you managed to get through to the end.

So, did the Eoganacht actually win the game, or did they just find the Grail?

The Great Knights don't actually have to "step" on the Grail. They can see invisible units, so it's much like using subs and such in the normal game. But they do have to search; just like in the Arthurian legends. Whether or not the AI actively searches, or finds accidentally, I don't know. I've found that in some respects, the AI is fairly unintelligent. Perhaps it should be the AU.

Attached is a BIQ file that will give you random maps. You ask, you get. However, due to the nature of the game mechanics, it is not possible to choose world sizes. Don't ask why not, I won't tell you.

Fantastic! Thanks for providing the random map. I've been having quite a bit of fun playing random worlds. I note that even with the huge map, there is an insane rush for land grab and a rocket-like pace through techs. I play on Emperor, but started Camelot on Monarch, and Emperor really speeds it up. It is nearly impossible to keep up at all with tech without getting Merlin's Hall. Speaking of which...isn't Merlin's Hall kind of insanely overpowered? I can research three techs to Polytheism (or two) and build the hall very early on, then never have to research a tech myself for the whole rest of the game amassing huge amounts of gold. I find that each game becomes about whether I want to cruise through with Merlin's Hall or struggle specifically not building it. Maybe it should expire an age later or just give a couple of tech advances instead? I kind of wish it wasn't an option.

I am dearly fond of Grande Trebuchets. Too much fun, and the AI, er, AU, doesn't know how to use them to much effect, but it can be the only way to protect against knights when you still have only horses...or no horses at all.

That earlier game, the Eoganacht found the grail. I was thoroughly winning the game otherwise. I was tired and quit....not sure what my ranking was, but it sure should have been first...I'd conquered 2/3 of the British Island.

What is the significance of the Great Chalice only the Eoganachts build? It adds 20 culture points! Is it to inspire other nations to go to war with them? Just part of the myth/legend for fun?

So, there's no way a random generator could be built for a large world instead of huge? The huge games really slow down halfway through for me. I ran into the grail once...it was an invisible unit in my territory I was unable to walk onto...it said I couldn't attack invisible units or some such. Before I could build a Great Knight, a Great Knight from another race came into my territory and found it (it was at war with me and I think it was trying to attack me with it and accidentally found it.) I notice the AU doesn't hesitate to use Great Knights militarily. Is it necessary to always have all 12 races playing too?

If you play the game enough you'll figure the Great Chalice thing out.

I've never had the Grail located in my territory, or out in the open. It's always in some ones city, but not their capital. (Azmorg can you guess what I'm getting at?)

Hey Synergy67:
Sorry it's taken so long to reply.
Been doin' the holiday thing.

Merlin's Hall is just a duplicate of the Great Library from regular Civ. I must admit that like you I have found that the scenario becomes a race for Merlin's Hall. Which is odd because the Great Library never impacted any of the myriad games of vanilla Civ that I've played. So, I'm not sure what to do, although I'm leaning towards altering it for the version 2.

I've always liked artillery.

I'll PM you about this.
But this is why its really not the best to try and randomize a scenario.
What you're really talking about is a Mod. This can be done, but then you don't have the unique challanges of the scenario.

Az, don't tinker too much - maybe some new graphics and an expanded civp - because the game is pretty good as is. Too many changes and you might wind up with a completely different game.

No, no, noooo...
Right you are, not too much tinkering. Just some tweaks to address the best suggestions that have come from this thread, and some thoughtfull PM's.
You are wise to suggest caution, oh 6+1 samuai without master.

That's the key! Many of the suggestions are pretty sensible too.

With Merlin's Hall: if I remember correctly, this never goes obsolete. Whereas the Great Library in the standard epic game does, of course. That's why the former is more of a game-breaker than the latter. It would make sense to allow this Wonder to operate for only a limited time.

That explains why I can go cruising through the Tech Tree.

Yah, I think it needs to be fixed.

Glad to see the sage theologian is still lurking around, waiting for the most opportune time to throw a bone of wisdom to us plebes. I hope you don't ever click on that "unsubscribe" link!
Cheers, mate.

I think it would better if city placement was ready .
and you can also change the starting year to the year by the history .

The starting year is supposed to be the year\era when Stonehenge was made.

Hey Doug,

Thank you for the kind words. Sorry about the crashes. I'm not familiar at all with how Civ plays on Mac, so I can't help you with the problem of the supposedly missing icon. As you've stated, it is there, and the Pediaicons entry is correct. So it must be a Mac issue. Guess you'll just have to get a Windows PC.

One possibility might be to rename the Eoganacht in the editor. If that doesn't work, perhaps renaming all the Pediaicon entries as well. If you need help with how to do this, give me a pm.

PS: Sorry about the delay in reply. Just got back from vacationing on the Oregon Coast.

I'm having crashes after about 200 turns with Windows XP. I haven't a clue where to start trying to fix it. I don't see an error message...the game just stops, folds & Im back in to Windows...any ideas to help me?

Loving the game by the way...good work

That could be a problem with the music - at least, that is what happens when there is a problem with the music. Are you listening to the soundtrack? And if so, does it happen when a particular tune would come on?

Jute,
What Plotinus said.
And welcome to the forums.

thanks guys but I'm not listening to it (volume turned down).Music wasn't on. Is there any parameters that involve number of units or cities that is unique to this scenario. I used to get the same thing when I had a number of units on auto move that ran into invisible units when none could see them. Agreeeing not to start a war with each units moves eventually crashed teh game so I had to stop the auto move to avoid it. THere appears to be no common thread with the crashes & I have had it happen with about five different civs. Any more suggestions are appreciated

My first thought is still the music.
Did you download the soundtrack I posted?
If so, then do the following as a test.
Even if you have the sound on the speakers turned off, the music can still be on.
Go into the game's Preferences and uncheck Music. Keep Sound FX checked.
Let me know what happens.

Haven't downloaded the music. Music has never been on. Put FX on. this particular game crashes while playing Belgae & then the Circus Maximus creates maybe the third chariot. Could it be something my PC is failing at?..it is a laptop!

Well, if you're running standard civ music then the music isn't the problem.
Your laptop could be the issue, perhaps. Depends on what your system stats are compared to what the game recommends. Have you checked?
Another possibility might be some sort of file corruption that occured during the download. I'd suggest dl'ing again, but it's a huge load. If you want, send me a pm with a mailing address and I'll mail you a cd with the game and the music.
