It isn't much of a bother for me, as my deity OCC science victory progresses well, but I saw something interesting - "The Louvre was built in a far away land"

Since I am friendly with all nations since like turn 100 and signed a ton of friendships and RA's the AI should not give a "far away land" notice for a civ. "Far away land" usually means an uncovered civilization. But since I already met them all, it can only mean that a city state built a wonder :)

Sometimes "far away land" means a city that you don't know of, even if it's a city owned by a civ you have met. E.G. if you have met the ottomans, and you've discovered Istanbul and they build a wonder in Edirne, then "far away land" will still play.

Also, if you look in the game XML, you'll see BuildingClassOverrides that make it impossible for barbarians or CSs to build wonders, unless you make a mod that lets them build them.

The thing is, it happened AFTER Hubble telescope. That opens up the entire map and you became aware of all cities. Unless that was built in a newly made city, there is no chance in hell that was any of the civs. I was already building the SS boosters on DEITY when that happened...

Back in Civ IV, there were actually several of the earlier wonders that Barbarian cities could bad. Kind of sad when the Barbarians beat you to a wonder....

Some of them were not listed in the XML code for Barbarians but there was at least one instance where a typo allowed the Barbs to build a wonder when it was clear that was not the intention.

It has been my experience that automatic map reveals, like the Hubble or an ancient ruin that gives you a map, usually don't trigger special conditions like a civilization or a city-state being "met." So even if you can see every city on the map, they are apparently still not all "discovered," as you never had line-of-sight on the city in question.

This is true. I've had instances where I hadn't met all the civs and then found them with satellites but couldn't talk to them until I actually sent a unit over to officially meet them.

Now I get it :) Allrighty, that explains why could that happen. I will be aware of it in the future and check out both city states and outlying cities. Besides, once you get to Satellites, you can send a spy to any city that was built on the map, so it is always worth checking what are they doing over there :P

Thanks for the info!

Oh man, I so want to see a barb camp building the Temple of Zeus...

If you check the Diplomacy overview, it shows what wonders every civ has built, even in cities you can't see...which makes the "far away land" thing kinda pointless :p
