Can the earth be flat

Prove what? That I know more physics than Perfection, or prove that there's an edge. If you want proof of an edge, you can just look at Sims2789's picture. If you want proof that I know more physics than Perfection, then he'll just have to challenge me to a contest.
Good sir, I challange you to a contest!

Here is another interesting question that I was thinking of.

Is there any shape apart from a sphere that could explain all the local phenomenon that we see on the earth's surface (like the horizon, geometric measurements, seasons, day and night) etc. The closest I could come to is a toroid. But it is not perfect since half of the toroid would have a uplsoping horizon. apart from that restriction the earth could be a toroid and still behave exactly as like we see it.

There are lots :)

Like a sphere except where the inside of the sphere is bigger than the outside of the sphere. You have to think "outside the box" or I guess "outside the sphere" to be able to see what I mean. The inside of the box or sphere can be bigger than the oustide. We only think it has to be smaller because we can't make boxes where the inside is bigger. Think of those magic tricks where they put a lot of stuff in a box or paper bag that you wouldn't think would all fit.

It's actually hard to believe so many serious poster's here react this joke (or isn't it???????).

Then let him defend himself, and don't feel that you need to resort to trolling to do it. Honestly - there's not much difference (in principle) between this and the anti-evolution arguments, depending on your perspective. Why can't flat-earthers post their views?
Because there is no reasonable possibility that it's a sincere view, and a practically 100 % possibility that it's a troll.
Creationism is also stupid, but there is a definite possibility that someone defending it actually BELIEVE it (and ergo isn't a troll).

Seems pretty obvious to me.

Moderator Action: Its staying open (for now). I suggest you simply take your own advice and ignore it.

1. I'm assuming that you're implying that there are more than 1 wavelength to light. That is true, my picture is grossly simplified. But even if there are different wavelengths, we could still get a shape similar to that through Fourier's Series. (See Figure 3)

1. You claim that the wavelength is long enough for us to experience the equivalent of 'radio shade' behind large buildings. But the wavelengths of visible light are far too short for that. no go!
2. Proove there is an edge. And no, I will not go hunting for someone elses picture. please post your own proof that there is an edge.

I cannot believe this madness is allowed to continue!

Is this how bereft of good topics we are around CFC these days?

You mean worse threads than this have never been allowed before?

Your rebuttal shows the earth as being flat. We can even see the edge.
 :goodjob:

You realise, however, that it is the intensity of the light that we actually see, not the amplitude. The intensity, of course, looking like the attached picture. If not for that, you would of course be correct.

BTW, I think this is the most enjoyable thread I've read in a long time.

Not a conspiracy, just a lack of understanding in the part of the masses. When a new idea is introduced, it'll always get some criticism. I remember when Einstein was threatened to be burned as a witch when he introduced Relativity, but now it's widely accepted.

Einstein? Threatened to be burned as a witch? In the 20th century?

But if they realy fell off the edge, how could they have invaded "Realy Big Corperation of America" later in the movie? Explain that!

Not necessarily true. I've met lots of flat earthers that truely believe the earth is flat. There is a huge group that lives in Arizona.

Its obvious to me from casual observation that the earth isn't flat, but heh, lots of things are obvious to me that other don't agree with.

No wonders those guys are from Arizona.

We must really come from a hole lost in the middle of knowhere in order to be able to ignore the most obvious geographical basis of knowledge. The whole world is organized the way it is organized exactly because the earth is spherical.

Once knowing that each aircraft has a limited range and once knowing the cities we can reach all over the world according to that limited range, we have already the evidence the earth can't be flat. And you just have to take the plane to verify this by yourself.

When creationists can argue, at the limit, that evolutionists are simply misguided, you have no other choice than to denounce a worldwide massive conspiracy in order to defend the idea that earth would be flat.

If you don't see a difference between the two positions, then you are especially hypocritical.

Moderator Action: No need to insult Arizona. Eyrei.

Eyrei, I'm sorry, it was simply a joke. My point was certainly not to hurt Arizonanians. ;)

If we can't even proof this flat earth theory is untrue, what can we proof ?

It's sometimes terribly difficult to proof the obvious. Same as trying to tell me exactly what is the difference between a beaker and a cup (dutch: beker and kopje). Every difference you give me can be countered and still we all know there is a difference.

Is anyone going to address the extinction of Dinosaurs, and why the poles don't get very hot if it's exposed to the sun for half the year?

[sigh] See figure 6.

Also with an edge being at sea, what happens to all that water falling off the edge?
Water wouldn’t fall off the edge. There is no force that’s pulling it out. Also water is polar, so the molecules form a tight bond.

It doesn't matter how we perceive intensity. It's not that we see negative intensity, it's just when light is on the other side of the earth we can't see it.

Oh, pipe down. You're just jealous you didn't come out with these observations.

Earth isn't a rectangle. It can still cast a round shadow if it's a disc.
