A House panel voted to allow employers to require workers to undergo genetic testing or risk paying a penalty of thousands of dollars.

Giving employers such power is now prohibited by legislation including the 2008 genetic privacy and nondiscrimination law known as GINA. The new bill gets around that landmark law by stating explicitly that GINA and other protections do not apply when genetic tests are part of a “workplace wellness” program.

“What this bill would do is completely take away the protections of existing laws,” said Jennifer Mathis, director of policy and legal advocacy at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, a civil rights group. In particular, privacy and other protections for genetic and health information in GINA and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act “would be pretty much eviscerated,” she said.

The bill was approved by a House committee on Wednesday, with all 22 Republicans supporting it and all 17 Democrats opposed.

If you can't get a job because of a genetic condition, and you can't get healthcare without a job, then this is just eugenics by another name.

We gattaca now boys

That's not fascist. It's actually relatively progressive to base discrimination on genetic testing instead of superficial observations about phenotype (or "race" as the Americans still call it).
So, no, you can't call them "fascist" for that. You'll have to make due with "misnathropic, avaricious, capitalist pigs" or variations that wouldn't make it past the autocensor,

Someone should start a pool on which forgotten 90s dystopian movies will be echoed by Republican 2017 policies.

Like tears in rain.

Why only the 90's? Sales of 1984 are way up.

Which strikes me as odd. We are not heading towards a 1984-type dystopia. If anything, we are moving towards a Brave New World-type dystopia.

Which is of course the real reason Schwarz quit Apprentice. He has to prepare.

I never saw Brave New World a real dystopia. Yeah, the society is decadent, but even the ******** underclass seemed reasonably happy.
It was probably becasue of the dominant values at the time of writing (and for some people even today). I don't consider drug fueled sex parties as a Bad Thing.

Edit: Oh, for fudge's sake. I use a shorter clinical term for impaired development and it triggers the autocensor ? That kind of political correctness is why Trump won. Do you want a boot stomping at a human face forever civfanatics ? Do you ?

It definitely wasn't the worst dystopia out there and I would venture to say it may even be the least dysfunctional of fictional dystopias, but there were definitely aspects of that society that make it a dystopia. The biggest being no one having any choice in the path their life takes. They would even go so far as to give embryos destined to be Gammas alcohol to stunt their development. Then there was the fact that the main reason everyone was content was through a combination of intense brainwashing and conditioning as well as powerful drugs.

I do like how they did riot control though. No batons, riot gear or tear gas, just a gas form of soma that immediately calmed the rioting mob.

Meh. Genetics are proven by science whereas prejudice based on color, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, etc, are not.

That being said, this is absolutely a bad idea. I don't know if 'fascist' is the correct word, but it is wrong and I oppose it regardless of whatever the proper term is.

hah!

It's been so long. Probably about 2001. Need to see again. Jealous you got out to see it on the big screen!

It doesn't matter what we call them. I mean, it might make people feel better, but it's not like Republican voters are going to hear that and think "Oh.. We've been voting for fascists? Alright well I guess I'm voting for Democrats from now on."

Instead Republican voters are going to hear that and think "Look at those loser communists throwing out insults and not focusing on the issues"

I'd agree with that.
