The main problem is that with animated avatars its way too easy for someone to make a really annoying one. It took no more than 2 minutes for me to make my example, and there would most likely be at least 10% of animated avatars being very annoying.

Such creativity is why we need to have an "animated avatar festival" so members can show off what is possible.

A special forum could be created where submitted avatars would be posted for viewing and judging, and for a weekend, members could use their submitted, animated avatars so they could be seen "in context". In the week after, members would vote for "winners" in different categories. A thread would be needed for submissions and another for comments and votes; Hmmm...maybe have a thread for each category to keep things less muddled. Then at the end of the week votes would be tallied and "prizes" awarded. I suggest nothing more than a small "badge".

Best Civ 4 related
Best Civ 3 related
Best overall
Best GOTM related
Most creative
Best OT related
Most annoying
etc.

I think that this would be a very positive thing for CFC and fun to boot. It would provide an outlet for those who really want to show off their animated avatar ideas and, at the same time, not impose them permanently on everyone else.

The administrative burden would be heavier for about 10 days as mods had to spend some time policing the new threads. If there are downsides to something like this, I'd like to hear them.

I think this could be already done with simply asking mods about the possibly new thread called "animated avatars" to be created to OT.
You of course show your own work not as your avatar but attached/linked picture.

With the use of spoiler tags you won't even have to see them all at once if you don't want.

Problem solved and others can breath more easily from that point on.

I like the theory, but why don't we just have a normal "annual" best avatars contest or something? No animations, people just chose an avatar that they like and nominate it into a certain category. Then CFC as a whole votes for it.

Yes an ongoing thread could be created as you describe. I perspnally would prefer it as an annual contest because such events build community and give members something to look forward to and plan for. As an ongoing thread I think that it would simply be viewed "another thread" that would get stale as time went on.

Categories would take some more discussion; those were just my ideas. Use of a winning avatar is an excellent prize. My preferrence is for a badge, but perhaps a choice could be offered. I think monthly is too frrequent and would diminish anticipation. Semi annual is the most frequent I would recommend.
