So Stephen Harper wants to pass a bill allowing police to acquire your internet surfing history without a warrant. Additionally, the bill will require ISP's to keep your history archived, just in case. Add this to the fact that many smart phones have GPS capability, and well...

Now, they say that this new law will only be used to nab kiddie porn purveyors, but if you believe that, I have this bridge in New York I'm looking to sell. Oh, by the way, all this comes on the heels of a national crime rate that is lower than it's been in something like 40 years.

This is part of a bigger bill that includes all kinds of stuff ranging from dropping the hammer on small time pot dealers to this. Here's a link to the whole thing:

And here I was thinking that maybe Canada managed to avoid the ugliness of the post 9/11 hysteria down south. Silly me.

No it isn't.

But seriously, moves like this are despicable. Hopefully the brave Canadians will rise up and overthrow this dictatorship before it's too late.

Is there much that can be done? 39.6% of us gave the Tories a majority.

Yeah, I am soooooo looking forward to the Conservative Dynasty they've been promising.

If Tim Hudak wins, Ontarians are royally screwed, especially if you live in Toronto.

Every generation, people need an awful government to remind them voting matters.

The Harper government doing something terrible? What kind of topsy-turvy world are we living in?

I'll buy that bridge, Puck Nutty.

Meh, you only need to worry about laws like these if you are a criminal! The government having a watchful eyes on it's citizenry is always a good thing. It helps to prevent crime and furthers the goal of national unity.

Because giving the police carte blanche worked sooo responsibly for the G-20 summit...

Surely Westminster still provides someone higher up to hear appeals?

Well heck, while we're at it, why have warrants at all? After all, the police never make mistakes. Surely it will only be the criminals who will find their doors being kicked in.

Requiring the police to actually have a reason (or, gasp, evidence) to question or arrest you? What silliness.

Why not, lets get rid of that amendment to the constitution and remove any laws relating to it. Criminals need be the only ones in fear.

Then why are a lot of us non-criminals in fear? After all, a 'criminal' is someone who does whatever the government decides is a crime.

Unfortunately, we just had an election. Barring a significant number of Tories and Liberals simultaneously coming down with food poisoning on budget day, I doubt there's much chance of the government losing a confidence vote any time soon. We're settling in for a 4-year reign of hell, folks...

Thankfully, my Turker job has not led me to any more child porn sites that could get me in trouble just from the cookies being on my computer... yes, the RCMP really are that stupid that they would blame me for that, even though the first thing I did was freak out and the second thing I did was report it.

Unfortunately, the current Governor-General was appointed by Harper. Even the politically-neutral public servants have been ordered to refer to the government as the "Harper Government", so I don't think there's much room for appeal.

You Canadians need to shape up. Where am I going to go if the U.S. goes down the tubes?

:D

But yeah, it's par for the course. This will likely get passed, and then struck down by the Supremes. Nothing that can be done about it for now. Four years of political hell and economic under-performance await...

It's not our fault that Jack Layton died. :(

I did my part - I made sure to be on the voters' list, attended an all-candidates' forum at which the Conservative candidate was represented by a potted plant because he didn't feel it was worth his time to attend, and I voted NDP.

I even submitted a rather snarky question at the forum, and the moderator read it out so the other candidates could answer if they chose - I asked if the House would resemble an arboretum instead of a Parliament, since so many Conservative candidates (more than 50) chose to duck out of the election forums... thus implying that they would also be represented in Parliament by more potted plants. The crowd got a good laugh out of it, the other candidates gave good responses, but the Conservative twit still got elected.

I feel that it should be noted this would actually do very little to stem child porn trafficking. While it would certainly nab idiots who ask google to find them "sex children pictures" most of the trade is done through P2P, .onion and other mediums.
