[RD] American lawmakers/senators voting to take internet privacy away.

the FTC recommends opt-in consent before selling or sharing the most sensitive information, like Social Security numbers, financial information, and information about children. But ISPs could use an opt-out system for everything else, including Web browsing history.
So in effect this is changing it from an opt-in system to an opt-out system? So if everyone was to write to their ISP and say "please do not distribute my any information about me" then the ISP could not sell anything? It does seem a reasonably simple solution to the problem.

Sure, but there are few advertisers out there who wield the power that Google does.

And for the record, we aren't just talking about Google not displaying their own ads, we are talking about them denying access to the programs that allow sites to run ads from any advertiser that uses Google for their web-based advertising (which is pretty much all of them). So in essence, Google has the power to say "you put up content we don't like and we will kill your site's revenue stream."

I'm not making a value judgement on whether or not that's a good thing, I'm just pointing out the fact that the statement that Google is unable to control what content sites put out is false. Sure, sites can do whatever they want in theory, but with Google being as powerful as they are, any site that doesn't play by their rules has almost no chance of being successful because Google won't let them run ads and will bury their site in the search results.

I'm more familiar with how Google works than you, you don't need to explain it. You're wrong about them having control over site content.

Lots of successful sites don't run Google ads, and that acceptable contents for adsense is completely unrelated to search results.

You're wrong about them having control over site content.

It's only wrong if you think in narrow terms of Google have direct control over content. Of course they don't have direct control, but they can use the threat of pulling access to AdSense from sites in order to influence them to only put out the content that Google deems "advertiser friendly".

Hell, I just provided an example of that happening right here on CFC, but you chose to just handwave that away and continue to say Google can't control content sites put out.

You can't run in politics unless you have a corporate sponsor/master.

There's a dude running a crowdfunding site to gather the funds to buy the browsing histories of Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. Up to $100,00.

Saw it on Chris Hayes show just now.

Obama's FCC waited until last October for this regulation

why?

sounds like IPs were already selling our information

is that true?

Good. Maybe violating the privacy of these politicians will make them give this whole thing another look and actually vote to protect our privacy.

You know I'm starting to think the only way to get the attention of these politicians is to start going after their families. Maybe start getting the addresses of their wives/husbands and the location of their children's schools so mobs of angry citizens can camp out and constantly harass them about their spouse's/father's/mother's political decisions. Basically, don't give these people a moment's peace until they either do what we want or have a mental breakdown.

EDIT: I guess this also begs the larger question of why the American people aren't more aggressive and antagonistic towards our politicians? I mean, plenty of people seem to be really angry about a lot of things, but they mostly just sit there and take it instead of doing something about it. And "doing something" doesn't necessarily mean shouting the streets either. There are plenty of ways, especially in this technological world of ours, to make life very uncomfortable for government officials that won't get you tear gassed or beaten with a baton.
