Cantidate cities for 2008

It seems the Red Chinese have the 2008 Olympics. Well, even Nazi Germany hosted the Olympics before their demise! Hopefully, the Olympics can be used to help hasten the downfall of the evil Red Chinese government.

Before WW2 you mean. I would hardly hope a repeat of that particular event.

China better be on their best behavior the next few years. Can you see them threatening Taiwan any further, thus provoking the Americans before the Olympics? I would hope not. Can anyone say 'boycott'?

Here here. Let's hope that forevermore WW II can be known not only as World War Two, but The Last World War!

The real crock is that the average Chinese person is a nice, intelligent, peacable individual. It's the Evil Red Chinese Gov't that must go, or else completely renounce its evil past, actions, goals, philosophy, human rights abuses, nuclear arms/biological arms/chemical arms, etc.

The Evil Red Chinese Gov't could take a first step by simulteously announcing they are the first government in the world to officially recognize Taiwan as an independent nation (not even the US has done that!), all ballistic missile and nuclear weapon development is unilaterally and permanantly disbanded, and human rights abuses will not only be abandoned, but victims compensated in some (even minor) way.

That would give them the real high road and a great leverage into world affairs, esp. against us here in America.

I suspect without the stong hand of an evil gov't, however, that the geographic China we know today might fracture into self-governing smaller regions and maybe into separate nations.

Though politics and the modern olympics are pretty much inseparable, I do wish athletics could remain "unspoiled" by the evils of politics AND corporation!

EDIT: The usual typos.

Poorer or smaller countries like Greece can be indebted for years after having hosted the Olympics.

Which is a double edged sword, unfortunately. But not too many nations can look with pride as being the origin of a major (probably THE major) sports event. The only one that comes close, but is not as "broad based" is the World Cup.

BTW, I wonder, who out there is going to step forward and take the Lion's share of the credit (on behalf of his/her nation) for the World Cup?

LOL, since The World Cup is a great event, it must have originally (Doubtless!) been American, right?!

BTW Jack Rog (speling!?) is the new president of the CIO.

I think you mean 'IOC' International Olympic Commitee. unless you were crossing over with French, the 'Commitee Intonationale d'Olympic or something

Yes, I'm very disappointed. Dick Pound should've won. He's done so much for the IOC, regaining them some credibility after the bribery scandal, negotiating huge television and marketing deals...

What do the rest of you think about a boycott? I dont think it would work but maybe if enough people did it...

I can't see a boycott working. Greed will rule in the end. IMO that is what it has turned into..greed.

How many times has the Olympics been held in Africa or South America?

Well lets just hope that hosting the 2008 Olympics is doing to China what it did to South Korea when they got it!!!

They suddenly got very aware of how the world wanted them to be and started to become much more democratic and started respecting the human rights!!!

Was there a human rights problem in S.Corea?
I didn't know, seriously...

As for the boycott; yes I would like to see it work. Unless real progress has been made untill then, But I don't think so. REAL progress would mean the fall of the regime. All the rest will only be done to impress us (the rest of the world).

The reason Beijing got the games is because Samaranch wanted them there. And he has no problem with dictatorships because he is a dictator as well. Although the IOC oligarchy now has a new dictator. Of course they would never elect Dick Pound as their leader. Dick would acctually curb the corruption a little, and what IOC member wants to loose all their perks?

Yes, a very true statement dirk! I hope he stays on as Vice President though. Samaranch, I've heard, has actually 'lobbied' for a Nobel Peace prize. What the hell is that??? You don't 'ask' for a Nobel Prize. He thinks he's some great humanitarian because he gets Beijing the Olympics.

LOL, Samarach and Bill Clinton are actually the same individual. Bloody Bill lobbied hard for a Nobel prize for his efforts to coddle know terrorists in Ireland. At least the Nobel committee knew better than to award a Nobel prize to a person who refused to stop 3 genocides, and who attempted to legitimize murderous terrorists.

But since the dirty deed is done (awarding the games to Beijing), hopefully the evil Red Chinese leaders can eventually be ousted or civilized (long shot, I know).
