One idea that's been raised over the years is to turn the 600AD scenario into a 500AD scenario, to enable players to start Japan and Vikings from their earliest start points without the randomness of a 3000BC start. You could start an extended France game in 500AD as well, I suppose.

Yes that's a good idea. TBH I would like to see a 325AD start, to include Byzantine start. too.

I would love this, I've always thought the conditionality of the Byzantine start one of the largest problems in the game's historicity. There was this thousand year long empire there, at the center of Eurasia, which in DoC might or might not be there, depending on how the Greeks and Romans are doing.

I understand the reasons of making it conditional since, yes, they emanated from the Roman Empire, but, I also think that conditional spawns should be restricted to civs that had shorter time spans and lesser impact in history.
