Comparing to the other faith buildings, it is weak because I never lack room for my art. It should be replaced by 2 slots of plays (there was a lot of mystery drama in churchs during the middle ages).

Time to increase the difficulty level, hm? :)

The Uffizi has been built in a faraway land.
The Louvre has been built in a faraway land.
The Shakespeare's Theatre has been built in a faraway land.

Yeah, before I had known that the cathedral had an art slot, I had 3 or 4 great artists waiting to give me great works by the time archaeology came along .

haha, how long did your artists wait till you could house their pictures? A few hundred years?

I think cathedrals are useless most of the time and would benefit from a change. If I'm bothering to produce great works of art I'll most likely also aim for a wonder like Uffizi or the Sistine Chapel or even just the Hermitage. Seeing as these buildings get theming bonuses it never really makes any sense to house a painting in the cathedral. Artifacts don't come until later and suffer from the same problem. I could place an artifact there but museums are available at that point to yet again provide theming bonuses. Needless to say, my cathedrals are pretty much always empty. :(

I play primarily on prince btw.

I think when I go for a culture victory I'm very very glad to have a cathedral because I'm going to go complete relic crazy and the more art slots the better.

Cathedals are fine. I currently have 2 Great Artists waiting for spots for them to paint their great work.

After I reach the tech to get Museums up, yup there will be spots for them, but it's more useful if you're even thinking about a cultural victory to have them somewhere.

Note that this follower belief does go fast.

I never got a need for that extra slot of art even at higher level... But yes, I got an issue with plays and music: there is only 2 wonders that give theme bonus. The cathedral is sort of "wonder" since it is not available to all civs but I think 2 slots for great writers shoudl be fine.... i can change the code myself anyway.. :)

There are already abundant writing slots (amphitheatre, Great Library, National Epic, Heroic Epic, Globe Theatre, Oxford) so I think it's fine to cathedrals remain as they are.

There's a kind of mild narcissism at work here.

Cathedrals are useless to you guys because you're doing something that makes them useless. Content is not put in the game with the assumption that it should all be useful to one civilization that's haording it all.

Consider that you get artists two eras before you get museums. Not everyone can have the Uffizi and Sistine Chapel. Not everyone can build a hermitage in a timely manner. If you don't take cathedrals as a belief, that leaves something available for another civ that lets it slot paintings before the Industrial era.

I imagine the utility of Cathedrals goes up as the difficulty levels go up. OP probably has a point on Emperor and below play there are too many slots to fill. Of course there are lots of units/features that suffer from this problem. Pre-BNW spys come to mind. On lower difficulties they aren't worth much on higher difficulties they are invaluable

Confession Bear: I like Cathedrals. :-(

It probably depends on map (how much space, lux you have before futher expansion is no-no...) having this extra slots helps before i have all musea up. Early turism never hurts.
Also what woudl you expect?
Mosque grants 3f 2c 1h, Cathedral with art slot 3c 1f 1h 2t. What would you expect?

When I'm going for a culture victory, I always take cathedrals. They are cheap (by the time I need slots for art, I have plenty of faith to spend), I don't have to waste time building them, and they also give a happiness boost which is often useful. If you aren't filling them up, maybe you need more archeologists! (Yes, I send archeologists to dig in other civs' lands. Because my response when they complain about it is pretty humorous. :D )

TIL Cathedrals have art slots! Now I don't have to "Start a Golden Age" anymore...

Great Artist burning a hole in your pocket? Save him till you have room.

take reformation belief sacred sites from piety, if you play it right u can win cultural victory on emperor below under 160 turns combo cathedral with other building. If you play wide it is seriously strong in my opinion.

I have sacred sites in my current game. Ok, the cathedrals can be useful for scenarios based on pre-renaissance times.. otherwise... :)
