Caveman 2 Cosmos (ideas/discussions thread)

Rockford has some crime, and the schools aren't great, but it is still the Forest City, and it has been a pretty good home!!!

@MattCA Yes Joseph is my real 1st name. And Thank You! Much Appreciated! :hatsoff::thumbsup:

To think I have been a member of this forum for 18 years now! Wow Time does Fly!
And I watched for 2 years b4 I signed up!

Many members have come and gone in that time span.
I wish Zappara would've staid and bhruic as well. There are many others I tip my hat to especially StrategyOnly.

C2C itself is 15 yrs old at the end of the year roughly. It's easily tracked since it was 2010 it was founded. Of course, we are simply the ongoing evolution of Civ IV and even before c2c in the modding community, giants had walked before us. It's kinda sad though how great the skill spectrum has been that it has become a code realm of twisted madness. I admit to having the crazy idea to learn from all that insanity and not only replicate it but respect it along the way and warp how to get things done around trying to do so with as little disruption to what was here before me as possible. Modern programmers look at what we've done and their poor brains meltdown rapidly. The guys that are more limited in what they 'know' are the ones that really get stuff done.

My work on these marketing platforms has been a very powerful journey that makes a return to the design desires I have long had now such an attractive prospect. I'm starting to feel like the tide is pulling in that direction and soon. We're somehow experiencing a little renaissance here thanks to Murdermesa's latest contributions. Very interesting conceptual balance adjustments last week!

Hi all,

I'm a long time player of C2C who took a long pause. From the beginning of my plays, I used my military units for hunting, finding the hunters too weak when they had to face barbarians or AI military units. While animal captures were lower when the units were inexperienced, once I reached a certain level (I use infinite XP) and with the right promotions (Woodsman, Guerilla, Hunter, and Sophistication and Forestry /Hillsman for the movements), it became child's play. Moreover, it gave my units great strength to prepare for future conquests and a lot of Generals to lead them.

After a long pause I started playing C2C again a little before SVN 11643 and started a new game when it was released.

For this first game, I kept more or less the same research strategy. After acquiring Gathering and Scavenging, I searched for Shelter Buildings and then rushed to Prehistoric Dance to get the next 5 dances: Moon, Fertility, Nature, War, and Rain.
Except that with SVN 11643, I was really having trouble with my weak Brutes and Stone Throwers. So I changed my tactics a bit and immediately rushed to Hard Hammer Percussion and then Binding. I played with the Size Maters option and 3 Clubman together (strength 3) without any promotion allowed me to get by against most herbivores and birds. Then you just have to kill a few of them and choose your promotions carefully to quickly become almost invulnerable.

To get to the reason for this post is that in fact it's much simpler since SVN 11643 than before, I'm currently walking around a map while the other nations are stuck in their city because there is either a Jaguar, Tiger or Panther near their capitals with so many promotions following their unsuccessful hunts with Chasers and Trackers, that in the end they only start exploring the map when I arrive with my units and clean up in front of their house.

I have other complaints about 11643:
The first is that hunting is enough to increase your population; there's no need to build anything related to agriculture once you earn enough food in battle. During my last turn by killing 10 animals I got 1455 food, certainly the small group of elephants brought me 992 but when it takes a total of 2116 to get a city from level 5 to level 6 that's a lot. So, my capital has been on "Avoid Growth" since the beginning, which I occasionally remove for a turn to make it grow.

The second is that research is the same; it's going too fast. I'm researching Warfare while my neighbor is researching Games. Because, unlike me, he doesn't hunt, and hunting really does increase science. With my two cities (pop 6 and 1), I produce 61 science per turn, whereas in my last turn, I received 520 from hunting. Sure there were some big critters but still it was a lot.

A few years ago I played at Deity level but when I started again 3 months ago I was pleasantly surprised to see that you had made big progress with the AI. And so with an Emperor level I managed to beat the AI by a short head. But since 11643 it has become too easy, so I will play a new game at Deity level and I will tell you how it is if it is more balanced or not, maybe the unit advantage for the AI will allow for a more balanced game but if they persist in using Hunters I doubt it a little.

Interesting assessment. Heard. By me at least. It should I think be taken into deeper consideration as well. Interesting that your military only hunting approach works this well - do you find there's a lot you aren't seeing too though?

Sorry, English isn't my native language and I don't really understand what's you're meaning here? Can you be a little more specific?

After a little time of reflection I think I got it. You were talking about the Hide and Seek option isn't it? Well I don't use this option, hence I don't have problem to see them, even the small ones.
I let you a save and you can check it: Map Huge, Perfect Mongoose, 8 civ included mine lvl Deity. I only cheated at the start by adding a cave near my 1st city. It's a thing i always do because why play a game named Caveman 2 Cosmos if there's no cave for starter.

Have you tried a game with out using Size Matters Option?
Also have you tired the No Peace among NPC Option?
Or even the Reckless Animals or Dangerous animals Options

And what size map and Number of AI players allowed do you use.

I have D/l'd your game will look it over this week.

Since the Size Mater option exist I always played with it. But I don't overuse it, only a lvl up and I never use the Downplay option
I tried the 3 others a long time ago and didn't like them a lot at that time
The No Peace between NPC because you end quickly by having predators I still encounter some when I'm near the border of an opponent and even with an Obsidian Axeman with 180+ XP some are challenging even deadly.
For the Reckless Animals or Dangerous animals it's too much stress at the start of the game and I'm not sure my heart can stand it anymore.
I like C2C for the long and new Eras compare to BtS, and all the building and micromanagement. Hunting is for me just a way to get better units, after that I can crush my enemies, see them driven before me and hear the lamentations of their women ;)

After the latest update, animals went CRAZY.
Crazy useful AND crazy dangerous.
I'm... not sure whether I like it or not.
On one hand, much more resources from hunting. NICE.
On another hand, constant restarting, because a sneaky cat ate my canary. ANNOYING.

on the latest SVN: I am loving the science beaker bumps from animal kills, but can't help wondering if related food bumps are balanced - a single Elephant increases food supplies by like 1500 pts. Contrast it with the 1 you get for the small fry - and it appears that random factors such as civ starting place will hugely privilege some players in terms of growth

Um, animals are also MUCH stronger. I definitely don't recall losing so many clearly strong units to them before this update, lol. So, YOU may become THEIR chow, ya know.

Indeed the goal here was to increase the difficulty of the wild stages of the game as well as the rewards. It's all part of moving closer towards the nomadic stuff really. Inching on its way anyhow, and gives this version a little taste and feel of its own.

I say this repping my understanding of it but this is mostly the modder's plan who put it in place and I think it's a great test run. One thing I mean to do through size matters and a few of the other combat mods is create a mechanism where big herds can likely scatter as hunters narrow down to a more reasonable smaller collection of kills. A plan hopefully for soon (TM).
