Caveman2Cosmos Let's Play - AstralPhaser/12padams

Right near the end of episode 7 you start building a tribe. This was bad. Your city was, I think, just 3 turns from increasing in population. Now it won't grow until you are done. Growth is good. Stagnating 3 turns from growth is bad.
Dang... Episode 9 is already record now so I can't fix that :(

By the way, I knew long ago the other continent was inhabited. How? The big stone head. (Indigenous people, or whatever the thing is really called
Oh yea... I forgot about that lol...

If a civ has both of these, then odds are good (but not 100%) that it is you they are preparing to go to war with.
Ah Thanks for explaining :)

Having a tribe sitting around doing nothing is a waste. Build the escorts first. While the tribe sits there it does nothing. While the escorts sit there they protect the city, which is better than nothing.
Oh don't worry about that I had a solution in episode 9 which fixed that anyway.

Just a note to everyone... Expect episode 9 to be uploaded within 12 hours and know that it's already recorded :)

I've been trying not to throw too much stuff at you, but here is one more thing you should check out:

The Alt-X keyboard "shortcut" (not really a shortcut since I don't think there is any other way to do it). This brings up the dot-map tool. When this is active it shades an area on the map around your cursor in the shape of a city's basic workable BFC and if you click on the map it will place a dot and a shaded area on the map that corresponds to the BFC area of a city if built there. This is good for planning where to put cities. It would also be good for showing such locations to the people watching without any inexact hand-waving type explanation. You can pick the color it uses from the color picker thing it puts at the upper left of the screen. Right clicking on an existing dot removes that one. Right clicking on an empty plot turns of the dot map tool (as does using Alt-X again). If you want to hide the entire dot-map without wiping them out you can use Cntrl-X to switch the entire dot-map off/on.

I have gotten into the habit of color coding locations by number of food resources using white for 0, the next row up for 1, and so on. I use the lightest shade of that color if the location has only food or only food and a happiness providing resource that I already have. I use the middle shade if it has a strategic resource or happiness resource I don't have, or the darkest shade sometimes if it has lots of such resources. I also sometimes use the middle red shade from near the top to mark vital locations, usually those with certain key resources that I don't have and which do not appear anywhere closer on the map (like the place to put a city to get the closest available source of iron, especially if I have no copper).

Dang... Episode 9 is already record now so I can't fix that :(

Turns out you don't have to fix the growth issue anyway. The adjusted turn data from the SVN update you did before the "silent movie" episode reduced the food needed to grow, so it went from 3 turns to grow (or whatever - it may have been 5) to having enough to grow immediately. I think it even threw out something near 300 food, leaving you 1 short of growing instead of being over what you needed and actually growing immediately. Fortunately it popped up a growth message and the food bar changed to saying "Growth!", one of which you noticed so you switched the build to the trails building and got the growth.

This brings up the dot-map tool.
Hmm... That dot map sounds a little complicated to me but I'll check it out in episode 10 since 9 is already recorded and I just need to finish editing it then upload it. It takes about 1.5x the length of the episode to edit it but I don't do it all at once because otherwise my RSI/sore hands start playing up.... The ai turns time in this game is actually great for those suffering from RSI who need frequent short breaks.

P.S I heard the dot map can cause crashes in some scenarios... Is this true?

You got seven animals and a tech, and that was all lost? Ouch, that sucks. Hopefully you can make that back up.

Regarding espionage, you make a specific number per turn. You can go into the espionage advisor to see where the points are being distributed. Let's say you're making 20 per turn. Let's say you've met ten other civs. They all start off with 0 weight. If all the civs have the same weight, that means that all your points are being divided amongst them equally, so you get two per turn against each civ. Once the total accumulated reaches a certain number, you get passive benefits. These thresholds are listed in the upper right area of the screen, including, "can see research".

If you want to put more points into a civ, you must take away putting points into another. Do this by increasing the weight of the civ you want to put more points into, as well, if possible, as decreasing the weight of civs you no longer want to invest points into.

It's a good rule of thumb to always at the minimum try to see what the highest ranked civs are researching.

And yes, haha, I heard you ask about the icons. I just turned up the volume, and at the point you asked, the music was at a bit of a low point, so I was able to work it out.

Actually...two episodes ago, I noticed your voice was a bit hard to hear, so I thought about telling you to make sure you checked the recording volume for the next one, but just never got around to it. Haha...oops.

And no, haha. I don't do let's plays. Looks like it might be a bit fun, though.

Well, watching C2C is a new experience. ;)

I noticed that you work all the tiles in your capital with priority on :food:.
I for one would at least work the poultry tile thus raising your production by a whooping +5 :hammers: per turn.

Is there a chance to get the initial save of your game?
I'd like to give it a try.

7 total I meant... I got a total of 5 in that episode which brought my total to 7. It was crazy... Every animal I encountered was practically subdued!

How many episodes have you watched? Have you seen any other c2c lets plays before mine?

As far as I know I already am working that tile... As of episode 9 at least but I am sure it's been worked on since earlier than that...

Is there a chance to get the initial save of your game?
I'd like to give it a try.
It seems to be a really interesting world! Sadly I have saved over and over meaning I can really only give you my save file as of now (completion of episode 9) unless of course someone knows how to reset the map and civs and practicAly the whole game from the start so I can save that to a new file and upload it to my first post.

Well... Good news! A new episode is now uploaded but wait an hour or so incase it's not ready in 720Hd yet ;)

Episode 9: http://youtu.be/fn38RoboVO8
Exploration, Expansion, War Declaration and entry into the new era... Yep this episode has it all! I finally build up the courage to explore the desert of my own continent, the coast and inland of the nearby continent and... realize that a raft just won't cut it anymore. If we are going to have any chance against enemy canoes and dangerous sea creatures we're gunna have to upgrade to a galley. On the bright side we founded our 4th city "Brisbane" on the nearby continent and were the first out of all the other civs to reach the ancient era.

I have watched all so far and will do so for the upcoming ones.

As for the game save, have a look in your auto folder inside the save directory, CivIV places the initial save there.

Ah, so now the fighting commences. Okay, I think you should spend the next episode focusing on establishing a military dominance, and working on your domestic affairs. Definitely, definetly get those galleys, three strength, 2 move, and two cargo space is EXACTLY what you need. I'd recommend after getting agriculture, getting up to naval warfare. Use two regular galleys as a permanent station between your two continents. They exist solely to transport units to and from the continents. Use the stronger war galleys (notice they have less cargo space) to set up a perimeter around the cotinents. I'd recommend about ten. Remember, seafaring units should always travel in groups. It is too easy for even a war galley to get rushed and killed by tons of animals.

Send your war galleys in pairs, and station them around the continents. They will help you get more sea animals. It will also give you a good nautilogical advantage.

After naval warfare, you need to focus on getting to masonry. That tech allows you to start building some awesome wonders. And I do mean awesome. If you are able to build the Sphinx and pyramids in the same city (make sure it's the same city!), you can then build the Valley of the Kings in that city. Which gives you a free tech, AND a golden age. Yeah.

But, to build awesome ancient wonders, you need stone. Focus on building lots of culture buildings down in Melbourne. You need that stone on those hills ASAP.

A few pronunciation irks. It's at-ul at-ul. And it's just "cast", not "cast-ay". Sorry, was just driving me nuts.

I don't recommend going on divine cult if rev is on, but with it off, I suppose it's alright. I usually prefer the prophets civic.

I really think you should just forget about having that scout explore that tiny island in the far east. I can picture it, you declare war on all the civs on the east continent to get your galley over there, finally move your scout onto the island, and there's nothing there. Seriously, if you look carefully, it looks like it's just a small island.

I'd really recommend against it. You need your scout in the north, to hunt and kill more animals.

Also...build alot of workers. Build three for now. Since they don't get consumed, they are amazing. Off the top of my head, you need to build a pasture on the horses near canberra, and the northern poultry tile needs a camp, or whatever it is that gets you poultry. Also, Brisbane needs alot of workers to work all that silver. See where stationing galleys between the continents is a good idea? Use them as a permanent ferry.

With the sea under your thumb, and your territory constantly being improved, all that's left is for you to get better units. Archery is right there. Make use of it, and upgrade all those atl-atls to archers. I'd recommend two to three archers in each city.

Get some trained dogs! All the archers in the world won't protect you against invisible rogues and assasins! You do not want all your hard-worked improvements getting destroyed, trust me. Place one in each city. Give them the promotion that increases their visibility range.

Finally, after all that's taken care of (make sure to build all your units in Canberra, for more exp.), keep expanding. Take over all that beautiful terrain on the eastern continent for yourself. You have the luxury of basically having only one small border on the western continent. The mountains and tundra have protected you more than you've acknowledged. As long as you have enough units defending your southern border, just focus on expanding in the new world. The terrain is MUCH better there, as I'm sure you've seen.

Don't forget once you've built boat fishing to build a work boat for your crabs.

A few notes on buildings. Always build a dog breeder in your cities. They are good by themselves, but you need them to build trained dogs, and they lead to more food buildings.

I...don't think your people have any clothes. Check the resources. Any clothes? If not, make sure to build a seamstress's hut somewhere.

Also, make sure to move that scout out of Brisbane. He needs to hunt.

The game is getting more complicated now, so I can't be expected to catch everything. The rest is up to you, champ.

Haha, wow... that guy in that video...

Well, let's just say I wouldn't want to get on the wrong end of an atl-atl from him.

Would be kind of funny to insist on calling it a spear though. Until you got skewered, that is..

Wow... You really should write a strategy guide for this game because you seem to be the most knowledgable person here about this mod. I'll try follow all that advice in the next episode which I am just about to record. I still really wanna make my galley go over there though not only for the scout but for all those unexplored islands that could be taken by another civ very soon.

@12padams

Its an "L" not an "I".

Atlatl = HERE

Lol :) so it's more like one word rather than two separate words...

You referring to the nearby continent or a continent that will require me to cross the ocean to reach it? New world usually means a continent inaccessible unless you cross the ocean right?

A strategy guide? Most knowledgable person here on the mod? Goodness, no.

I'm just fairly good at making sure empires are running as efficiently as possible.

And yes, by "new world", I mean the eastern continent.

@12padams

Time for more pronunciation lessons ...

1. Caste = HERE

2. Agriculture = HERE

3. Narwhal = HERE

4. Beluga = HERE (without the "Sturgeon" at the end)

5. Wolverine = HERE

Note that it has nothing to do with your Australian accent. You just happen to have trouble reading new words. Which is understandable if you have never heard of them before.

Oh, by the way, if you find any fish... be sure to settle a city there as soon as possible. If you get a city with fish in its radius, you can build the polynesian culture there. This will let you build 7 strength units that start off with city raider. Yeah. Also, later, it will let you get some awesome hero units.

It really sucks that there are so few cultures for oceanic civs to get. There's only three really worthwile, the aforementioned polynesian, the maori, which requires prime timber and coast in the radius, and the australian. Australian is the best, but it comes really late, and sadly, the only way to get it is by havin the assimilation option on, and conquering the english, to get their culture first. No english on your map? No assimilation on? Sorry, no austrailian culture for you.

Oh, and also, I've noticed you're not building any fire pits. You should. They give you charcoal, and lead to a building that gets you more food, and another that gets you more science.

....

....
English culture is a great wonder for several versions now.
You need
- culture European
- coast, apple and forest in city vicinity
- monarchy (the tech).

Of course, without assimilation you won't get culture European.

Lol, A little late... I already recorded episode 10 and since its gonna be posted in 4 hours you are probably going to watch it and say "BUT I TOLD YOU HOW TO PRONOUNCE THESE THINGS". Remember... Episodes are recorded usually 30 hours before they are uploaded except for the weekend.. then they are recorded 10-12 hours before being uploaded.

Dang... If I had only read that before recording episode 10 :( I'll do it in episode 11 because I know where the fish are now :)

No english on your map? No assimilation on? Sorry, no austrailian culture for you.
I've got assimilation on... I just hope the English are on my map too!
Of course, without assimilation you won't get culture European.
I'm sure I have assimilation on... now your all making me doubt myself :(
*12padams checks his settings* Yes! Assimilation is on!

Now just for your info here is how I often record and upload this lets play. Just remember when its Tuesday for me it is actually Monday for those living in America.

Monday: Record an Episode
Tuesday: Edit and upload Mondays episode
Wednesday: Record an Episode
Thursday: Edit and upload Wednesdays episode
Friday: Nothing!
Saturday: Record and upload an episode.
Sunday: Record and upload an episode.

Oh and wolfensoul9... All that advice you gave me I started implementing it in episode 10 (Will be uploaded in 4 hours) but sadly couldn't get through all of it so I'll try in episode 11 :)
