Playing ... stay tuned.

I'm in 410 AD and all is well. We have the SoZ! We destroyed Tonawanda and conquered Centralia and Salamanca (whichs contains the ToA). And we have an MDI army!

Will finish tomorrow, tonight Holland plays the quarterfinal.

Sounds good to me!

In 440AD now, Iroquois will almost certainly be destroyed next turn. We have a second MGL!!! What to do with it? Second army (not needed for the war) or rush the Heroic Epic somewhere?

Rush HE in a city that needs some culture.

HE sounds good; too early for the Pentagon.

I've played. Iroquois are destroyed. We still have an unused MGL in Grand River, it should go to rush the HE somewhere. This means that the shields in Leipzig should be assigned to another wonder. I kept most Iroquois cities; if we do not want that, we should now discuss which ones to disband.

The turnlog:

Spoiler :

CBob04, 350 AD

Turn 0: 350 AD
Check the tech situation. As Overseer suggested, I sell engineering to the Arabs for 59 gpt and 11g. Then buy theology for convention, 6pgt and 10g. Sell engineering to the Americans for 6gpt and 73g, all they can afford. The rest have no reasonable offers for engineering.

Military situation. Our force in the east is running a bit low on healthy attackers. And a 6 archer stack is keeping a bit of our forces tied up near Hamburg. Decide we need a bit more force, but only 1 city is on military right now. since out monetary situation is a bit better now because of the gpt deal with the Arabs I decide to switch some cities to military for a couple of runs, then they will switch back to economic improvements.

Rush duct in Munich for 108g, and set three scientists back to work.
Cologne: switch market to MDI in 2.
Konigsberg: switch market to rax in 1.
Leipzig: switch Sun Tzu to MDI in 1. This wastes some shields and terminates a wonder build, but I feel right now we cannot have 2 cities on wonders, and Leipzig has a rax. MM the city for more growth (from growth in 13 to growth in 5).
Bremen: switch duct to treb.
Niagara Falls: set it to starve for minimizing the flip risk.

IBT - Iro archer stack moves into our territory W of Hamburg.
Leipzig: MDI -> MDI.
Hamburg: MDI -> pike in 4 (needs 1 more shield for pike in 3)
Konigsberg: rax -> MDI in 5 (needs 1 more shield for MDI in 4)
Munich: duct -> rax
Babylonians start Sun Tzu

Turn 1: 360 AD
MM Hamburg and Konigsberg for the extra shield they need.
MM Berlin, we suddenly need 2 specialists to keep it happy, I don't get that??? Probably because of the six Iro archers in our territory? I buy incense from the Vikings for Wines and monotheism.
At Hannover, eSword kills rSpear: 1-0.
At Salamanca, the cats redline 2 spears (1 not yet fortified), we kill them and we own Salamanca. (3-0). We keep it because it has the ToA! Some culture expansions could help us.
At Niagara Falls, we kill an Iro archer. (4-0)

IBT - Iro archer stack moves towards Centralia.
cologne: MDI -> MDI.
Americans start Sun Tzu.

Turn 2: 370 AD
The archer stack need to be engaged because it is keeping to many units of us tied up. It has split into 4/2. we engage the stack of 4 and kill 3 archers against no losses. (7-0) we leave the 4th since it would expose a unit of ours.
Near Hamburg an archer dies on attacking a loose Iro spear (7-1) which is then killed by an eSword (8-1).
At Salamanca the cats redline a lone archer and an eSword kills it (9-1).
Bonn founded -> pike.

IBT - Babs boot our galley
Niagara Falls starves.
Frankfurt: court -> market
Munich: rax -> MDI.

Turn 3: 380 AD
Near Hamburg, an eSword kills a loose Iro spear and we have an MGL. It forms an MDI army in Hamburg, to be operational next turn. (10-1)
Near Salamanca we assemble scattered units near Tonawanka, to be attacked next turn.

IBT - Iro archer redlines a loose MDI but dies: 11-1
Berlin completes SoZ -> Sun Tzu.
Leipzig: MDI -> pike.
Vikes start sun Tzu.

Turn 4: 390 AD
MDI army plus 3 MDI move on Centralia.
Battle of Tanawanka: the cats redline 3 spears which are then killed without losses. We raze it for 2 workers. (14-1).
We kill a loose archer. (15-1)
Arabs now have education. We don't want that yet, since it expires the ToA. Anyway, right now they'll want monopoly prices, so it's better to wait anyway.
In order to free up the 2 swords that are now defending Bonn ad Niagara Falls I rush 2 pike builds there.

IBT- Near Centralia, 1 Iro archer dies and another one redlines fighting invisible units.
Niagara Falls: pike -> harbor.
Bonn: pike -> harbor
Hamburg: MDI -> pike
Konigsberg: MDI -> MDI
The people love us and we get 2 palace expansions.

Turn 5: 400 AD
Gottlob der Erschreckliche, the brave elite* sword, is promoted to MDI.
At Centralia: MDI army kills vSpear loosing 4 HP out of 12. (16-1)
Then it loses 6 HP out of 8 killing a vSpear. (17-1). Ughh. Almost lost an 8 HP army against a spear!
2 MDIs kill 2 more spears and reveal an archer. (19-1). Wait with final attack since right now we can move in only 1 unit if we capture the town.

IBT Leipzig: pike -> Heroic Epic.
Cologne: MII - settler (why I ask myself now).
Hannover: duct -> court.
Stuttgart: court -> duct.
Americans are building KT.
ToA creates some culture expansions.

Turn 6: 410 AD
In the E, move stack on Grand River.
at Centralia, we kill an archer and the city is ours. (20-1)
America will give us chivalry for either theology or engineering. We don't need it, as we have no horses and will not have in the foreseeable future, and we certainly do not want o trade it around on our own continent.

IBT - Munich: MDI -> court.
Heidelberg riots.

Turn 7: 420 AD
Correct riot in Heidelberg.
Grand River: cats redline 2 defending spear and then an eMDI dies attacking 1 of them (20-2). Then an eSword and eMDI kill them. (22-2). We keep it, we gain 2 cats and 2 workers, city already has a duct.
Change some military builds, we have enough now:
Hamburg: switch MDI to court.
Kongsberg: switch MDI to market.

IBT Iro archer dies attacking an MDI near Hamburg. 23-2.

Turn 8: 430 AD
In the e, move stack on St Regis. Move 2nd stack on Allegheny.
I miss click our galley and it ends its turn at sea.
Gunpowder in 1, tech slider to 20%.

IBT - Iros want to talk, nah.
Gunpowder comes in, set research to chemistry.
Oil Springs has been captured by the Mongols.
Berlin produces first ancient cavalry.
Heidelberg: market -> court
Cologne: settler -> market
Babylonians and Mongols start KT, Egypt Sistine.
Our one and only galley Graf Spee der Zweite sinks.

Turn 9: 440 AD
We don't have salt, but Allegheny does! It will be ours next turn!
At St. Regis, cats do relatively bad and redline 2 spears and yellowline a 2nd. eMDI dies on the yellow guy. (23-3).
Then an EMDI redlines but kills a redlined spear, another eMDI kills the last defender and we have a second MGL! (25-3)
After consulting team we decided to use the MGL for the HE.
Another EMDI dies on a redlined spear (25-4) before an eSword kills it; we own St Regis and gain 2 workers. (26-4).

IBT - Egypt starts KT.

Turn 10: 450 AD
At Allegheny, our army kills 2 spears and we own it, gain 3 workers. (28-4)
At Akwesasne, 2 MDIs kill the last 2 Iro units.(30-4) Iroquois destroyed, luckily they had no settler on a boat.
Now notice that I forgot to turn the tech slider back up, do that now.

Leave the save like this, some units still have movement, including our MGL.
Hamburg and Hannover need worker turns, they were close to the front all the time so we had to be careful there.

The save:

Turnlog added to previous post.

Issues: I kept most Iro cities as I wanted to know if we had salt in that area so that we could at least keep the salt in our borders. We know that now, we have salt at Allegheny. Personally I think we should keep all cities we have now and play defensive from here, but if the team disagrees we should probably disband some cities now. Note that having them for a couple of turns has not had a major effct on the game so far (disbanding might) except possibly a negative one in that it has slowed down our offensive by tying up units as defenders for the conquered cities.

Iroquois are gone!

:dance:

I'm sure you had too much fun, ThinkTank. Killing off an AI always gives me a smile. :mwaha:

We now have 20 cities, which is our max for a while. Centrailia is a city is a very bad location, stuck in the middle of a jungle, surronded by 8 tiles of jungle. A city-site only the AI could love. If we had to get rid of a city this would be my first choice.

Luxuries
We now have 3 luxuries inside our borders. These home-grown goodies are Wines, Spices and Ivory. We import Incense from Scandanavia and our current deal ends in 11 turns.

I would like to consider the possiblity that we gain our own source of Incense.

This means a Viking war to capture Reykjavik, which has one Incense NW of the city and two more one tile further out.

That would give us 21 cities, so we would have to do something with one city; either abandon it or gift it to an AI.

Overseas
We may need to slow down the tech race overseas. Military Alliances would do the trick, but we need embassies in order to do. And we need a victim(s). I think we should try to have two wars on-going at all times overseas at all times. If they are fighting they are not researching.

Got It!
But it will be a few days before I can play. Which gives plenty of time to kick around these ideas and see if they are worth anything.

I'm sure you had too much fun, ThinkTank. Killing off an AI always gives me a smile. :mwaha:

Yeah! It was relatively easy since they had no iron nor horses.

We now have 20 cities, which is our max for a while. Centrailia is a city is a very bad location, stuck in the middle of a jungle, surronded by 8 tiles of jungle.
A city-site only the AI could love. If we had to get rid of a city this would be my first choice.

It is on a river and has potential because under the jungle is grass, but it will take a lot of worker turns. I'd keep it because we have a shot at finding coal in the area. I'd actually build some culture there so that it grabs as much jungle as it can (2 city expansions). If we need to let go of a city I'd say abandon Awkesasne.

As for research, we should avoid metallurgy for as long as possible since it expires the SoZ. We don't have horses so this will be our only source of fast units. Likewise, Education expires the ToA, we should at least wait with acquiring that until our recently conquered towns get their first culture expansion.

We can research the upper path at least through Printing Press, then do Metallurgy or Education on a minimum run to get a nice stash of cash and ACavs. That money could be used to buy embassies overseas and then for alliances to keep them at each others throats. We can also reuse the strategy of tying peace treaties to alliances to really stir the pot. It has been awhile since I've seen the map, but I would guess that desert and plains towns could be abandoned and/or replaced with a more useful setup to keep the AI from building new towns. Of course deserts have oil and saltpeter at times, and IIRC, our UU needs oil. I'd love to see what things look like before I make a fool out of myself:lol:

My plan is to get to back on track this evening.

Sorry for the delay.

0 (Preflight) 0450 AD

Allegheny rMusket -> worker (slave) in 10.
St. Regis rPike -> worker (slave) in 9.
Grand River rPike -> worker (slave) in 7.
Akwesasne rSpear -> worker in 10

Forgot that the game was saved in mid-turn.
Move units into cities with resisters to make them peaceful.
send workers to connect Akwesanse.
Start a chop near Cologne.

We build an embassy with Arabia for 84 of 485 gold. This allows us to spy on their progress on Sun Tzu.

Mecca 450 AD
Spoiler :

450_Mecca.jpg

Mecca is size 12, has 4 Pikes (1v, 3r), nets 10 spt and needs 23 turns to complete Sun Tzu's, just like we do.

Berlin swaps a tile with Nuremburg and completes Sun Tzu's in 22, not 23, turns.

I consider rushing the HE with our MGL, Richtofen, but then Leipzig needs a build. Knights Templar looks good, but it is cheap (300 gold) and has 5 Civs chasing it right now. I don't know if we could build it or not. We need three standing Armies to build the Pentagon, which lets us have larger armies. So Richtofen will probably become an Army, but most likely an empty Army. He moves to Hannover, heading for Berlin.
Frankfurt market -> trebuchet in 3.
Resistance in St. Regis and Allegheny ends.
Centralia has culture expansion; we own more jungle.
We add onto our palace; we put a dome on the center building.

1 0460 AD

Even with the resistance over, St. Regis is still corrupt, bringing in 4 shields but netting only one. Science Farm once the worker is done.
Allegheny is better. It brings in 5 shields and nets 3; not bad at size 2. Courthouse after the worker.

Time to prune some (only some) of our military.

Wake vSpear and move 1NE into Stuttgart, disband towards the aqueduct; adds 5 shields, aqueduct in 6, not 7.
Maces upgrade to Guerilla. I'm not a big fan of Guerillas but maybe I just need to know how to use them. Normally I just ignore them.
I'll send our fighting units towards Cologne. Our next offensive, planned offensive, that is, will either be W or NW of Cologne, so it is a good stopping/gathering point for right now.

I send workers to mine the mountains. Just to get that chore done and out of the way.

Need two forests planted near Berlin to help with Sun Tzu. Berlin is +4 food and cannot grow any larger. We have two tiles producing one shield each; forest would increase overall production from 22 to 23 spt.

Richtofen arrives in Leipzig and builds an Army, Richtofen I. It will be empty for a while.

Embassy Costs
America 83 gold
Babylon 92
Egypt 85
Mongolia 53

We have the gold and we're at peace. Let's be snoopy.

Babylon 460 AD

Karakorum 460 AD
Spoiler :

Size 7; 1 Spear, 2 Pikes; 6 spt; Sun Tzu in 58 turns.

We are down to 111 gold, +28 gpt.

No wars on the overseas. And no one over there knows the Mongols or Vikings.
[IBT]
Forset chops to Cologne.
Culture expansion at Grand River from Temple of Artemis.

Nuremburg market -> vGalley in 6.

2 0470 AD

Two slaves begin road to connect Akwesasne, finish in 3.
Three workers road the mountain betweeen Hamburg and Frankfurt.
Forest cleared so the four slaves start a mine, finish in 3.
Two stacks of three workers apiece start a mountain road on the two mountains near Heidelburg.

The mountain workers were origianlly 4 worker stacks. The extra worker(s) heads to Berlin to plant trees.

Grand River, at size 2, is only 50% corrupt. Courthouse next, after worker/slave.
Fire the geeks in Nuremburg, grows in 3.
Clown in Akwesanse becomes a geek.
Cologne works mined grass instead of forest; aqueduct in 6 not 5, but commerce goes from 14 to 17.
[IBT]
Arabs are building Copernicus' Observatory (Astronomy).

3 0480 AD

We have 12 catapults to upgrade to Trebuchets; takes 360 gold and we have only 169.
Putting all Elites into a mixed stack near Cologne.
[IBT]
Statue of Zeus produces an Ancient Cavlary.

Hamburg courthouse -> vMusket in 6.
Konigsberg market -> harbor in 3.
Frankfurt trebuchet -> trebuchet in 3.
Allegheny worker(slave) -> courthouse in 80.
Munich courthouse -> market in 8.

St. Regis has culture expansion.

Egypt is building Sun Tzu's Art of War (Feudalism)

4 0490 AD

Begin a forest S-SE of Berlin, finish in 3 turns. This tile is not currently being worked by any city.
Begin a forest N of Berlin, finish in 3 turns. This tile, a mined BG, is being worked by Berlin.
Sending spare slaves towards Centralia to clear jungle. That takes 48 turns for one slave.

New vAC in Berlin moves to Leipzig, to join the other AC.

Just to state the obvious, our Pikes can upgrade to Muskets, which can upgrade to Riflemen, which can upgrade to Infantry.
Longbows and Maces upgrade to Guerilla.
Swords upgrade to Maces.
[IBT]
Grand River worker(slave) -> courthouse in 80.
Culture expansion at Allegheny and Akwesasne. We now own all the marsh around Allegheny.

America is building Sistine Chapel (Theology).

5 0500 AD

Begin a mine SE of Hannover, 6 turns.
Mine completed 2SW of Cologne, begin road, finish in 2.
Three workers climb Mt. Leipzig.
Mountain roads near Heidleburg are complete; those workers move towards Berlin to help plant trees.
Awkesasne is connected on one side (East); add a road to the North, towards Allegheny.

Centralia worker -> rSpear, for one turn.

We can sell Gunpowder to Arabia for Chivalry, 51 gpt and 141 of 141 gold. Should we? Don't know. Save game to ponder.
Check further. Arabs are paying us a net of 53 gpt for another 5 turns. I'll check back then and see if we can get more gpt.
[IBT]

6 0510 AD

We begin to road Mt. Leipzig, finish in 3.
Begin a forest 2NW of Berlin, currently a mined grassland. Three workers start this turn and three more will join next turn.
Begin a road between Akwesasne and Allegheny. 3 turns.

This turn Arabs will give Chivlary 41 gpt and 61 of 61 gold. Arabs must be researching Gunpowder.
We learn Chemistry in 2.

Frankfurt rLongbow -> Trebuchet in 1.
Centralia rSpear -> worker in 1 (Centralia will grow to size 2 on the IBT)
[IBT]
Two forests complete.

Egypt wants to talk. Cleopatra offers Chivalry for Gunpowder. Not quite good enough.

Konigsberg harbor -> trebuchet in 3.
Frankfurt trebuchet -> trebuchet in 3.
Heidelburg courthouse -> vMusket in 6.
Cologne market -> courthouse in 7.
Hannover courthouse -> market in 10.
Centralia worker -> library in 40.

Stuttgart gets culture expansion.

Akwesanse worker(slave) -> library in 20.

Palace Expansion; we plant some bushes.

7 0520 AD

Chemistry in 1; smart slider down to 50%; +57 gpt.
Add more workers to the forest plant 2NW of Berlin; it will complete this IBT.
Galleys upgrade to Caravels, then Galleons and then Transports.
[IBT]
We learn Chemistry, begin to learn Printing Press in 6.

St. Regis worker -> trebuchet in 30.

9 0540 AD

Two slaves begin to clear the roaded marsh SW of Allegheny, finish in 16.

[IBT]
Hamburg vMusket -> vMusket in 6.
Konigsberg trebuchet -> vMace in 4.
Frankfurt trebuchet -> trebuchet in 3.

10 0550 AD

Arabs learned Gunpowder on the IBT.

We can sell Chemistry to Arabs for Chivalry, 110 gpt and 23 of 28 gold. That needs some discussion.
We don't want Education, that kills Temple of Artemis.
[IBT]

Workers and Slaves
We have 15 slaves and 1 worker clearing jungle SE of Centralia. They should finish this IBT. We really need only 12 slaves doing that. They can clear one jungle in 5 turns (1 to move into the jungle and 4 turns chopping). Or we could road the jungles before we cleared them. That will take 18 slave turns per jungle tile. I prefer clearing the jungles first and then roading. If we put the slaves into stacks of 6, it would take 8 turns to clear one jungle tile and then one more turn to road the underlying terrain. I like that (efficient); I don't like that (slow); Centralia is small so maybe slow is okay. Next player get to decide what to do with those slaves.

On the hills north of Hamburg are two sets of 6 workers, both sets making mines. One will finish their mine this IBT, the other one turn later. Six workers on a hill can road that hill in one turn.

South of Hamburg are 3 workers to just generally improve around Hamburg. They are on a BG.

South east of Hannover are 4 slaves making a mine on a hill. They finish this IBT.

South west of Allegheny are two slaves clearing a marsh. The third slave I had planned to join them in the fun.

South of Grand River are five slaves making a mine that completes this IBT. I had planned for them to help in marsh draining. That would be a stack of 8 marsh-drainers; 4 turns to drain one marsh.

Trading
We have a chance to sell Chemistry to Arabia for Chivalry, 110 gpt and 23 of 28 gold. I like the gold, but I don't want the Arabs too smart. I just wish they were involved in a war.

The Temple of Artemis expires when we learn Education. Berlin is the only city that has a culture expansion anytime soon. With or without ToA, it will expand in 3 turns. The next closest expansion is in 31 turns. If it's effects end, we don't lose anything important.

However, if we include Education on the Arab Chemistry deal, our gpt drops quite a bit.

We can sell Theology to Egypt for Education if we want/need to.

Egypt and Babylon are at war but not much action. Before the war they both had 15 cities; now Egypt has 16 and Babylon 14.

Once we get Printing Press (due in 4 turns) we can sell Communications between the Old World and the New World. We can get everyone's money, which right now is around 84 gold.

Our Wines/Incense trade with Vikings expires this IBT.

Wonders
Berlin is 11 turns away from Sun Tzu's Art of War. The Arabs are close behind.

Leipzig is working on Leonardo's Workshop, but if we get Sun Tzu's the Arabs might build this wonder on the cascade. We could investigate Mecca for 172 gold. But that cost hasn't changed since 460 AD, so I don't know what we might learn.

Military
I thought I would be building more improvments but we've already done most of the basic ones. Library, market, barracks and such. We need Education to build universities. So I built military units instead of cathedrals and colosseums.

The bulk of our military is SE of Cologne, segregated by unit type. All Elite units are in one stack. Our Elite* is by himself, in a single stack. Our Army is in Allegheny. Ancient Cavalry are all in Leipzig. We have one empty Army, which I had earmarked for Panzers.

We have a stack of 12 catapults SE of Hamburg. We can upgrade to trebuchets (cost 360 gold) or disband someplace.

We have two vSwords we could upgrade to Maces. We have three (I think) eSwords.

I have one serious issue. Why should we want to trade communications with the other continent??? It's completely in our interest to be the only one knowing the other continent, it's the perfect trading position.

I can do this one tomorrow or Rod 01. If you can take that one, I'll get to this one sooner. It's up to you, CBob.

I was thinking of cash, not strategy. My bad.

20 cities? Maybe the variant seemed boring to everyone. In a way, you guys might have made this harder by warring so much early on. If panzers work comparably like modern armors did in my French game, I'd expect one could spawn leaders like crazy with panzers. How so? Try to stay out of wars until you have panzers... or maybe just fight one to spawn a leader and stop it as soon as possible. When you get panzers, then start the wars and the AI will probably have a bunch of obsolete spears, warriors, longbowman, medieval infantry, etc. still lying around... basically a bunch of fodder for 3 turn attack panzers to rather quickly get to elite and spawn leaders. Russia might do the same thing well enough if you have A LOT of artillery around.
