CBob04 Achtung Panzer!

Hit Enter ->

IBT -> We build Sun Tzu's in Berlin and start working on a University
Mecca (Arabs) build The Sistens Chapel
About 4 of our Cities completed Universeties, and started Banks :)
Also? did I mention that we resurched Banking and started Physics at 60% and will
be done in 6 turns.

Turn 1 -> We move some workers... all that good stuff. Also, we sell Chemistry to America
For Astronomy and 31 gold :) yey!

IBT -> :sleep:

Turn 2 -> Hannover completes a University and start on a Bank.

IBT -> :sleep:

Turn 3 -> Nothing much

IBT - > :sleep:

Turn 4- > Mothing much :sleep:

IBT -> :sleep:

Turn 5 -> :sleep:

IBT -> Arabs Americans and Babylonians all try to make War Alliences with them... I laugh.

Turn 6 -> Physics due next turn.

IBT -> Arabs build Leo's Workshop :( they are on a Wonder Rampage even with all the wars
We Resurch Physics and We start on Magnetism as I think Harbours with all the other
civs will help us more economicly than trying to build Newtons University.

Turn 7 ->nothing much Mongols are scaring me with approaching troops

Turn 8 turn 9 and turn 10 -> noting happend but next player might boot declare war on Mongols they have about 8 troops in our land. I will post pics and save a little bit later

Got it.

Had a look at the save. We're doing good.

I feel like booting the Mongols, they have about 10 units in our territory, and another 5 at the border. I don't like that. I mean, we are the Germans, we should keep up some of our arrogant attitude don't we? :D If that means war then it's thank you for the war happiness; we'll kill all units in our borders and play defensively. Or is this not in the variant?

Further, I'd like to spread some units for minimal defense in our coastal cities, we're now almost defenseless against a landing at some spots.

Then research. We are researching magnetism due in 3 at 2.6.2. After that, the only required techs we need are ToG and Metal. We have a monopoly on physics, so going for ToG and having a shot at Newton's seems viable. Then there are 3 optionals we should consider.

Navigation. Eventually we will have to travel ocean, so we need this sometime. We don't need it before panzers, so there is no urgency in this. And Magellan is nice, but not necessary either. I say we postpone this, we might be able to trade for this or else research it later.

Military tradition. Nice to have for the Military Academy for building armies. But the Academy is a small wonder, so there is no hurry, especially since we probably won't have horses so cannot build cavs, and anyway building armies manually we only want to do in a city with a factory and a power plant. Again I say later.

Economics. I doubt it for this game. We are relatively small so the pay-off of Smiths, if we can get it, is not big. I'd say forget this, I suspect the research time and the shields are not worth it (though I cannot calculate this).

Our neighbours probably having cavalry while we don't is a bit of a risk but not once we have infantry. So I say we beeline to Replaceable Parts.

Summarizing, my proposed research path is:

Postpone Navigation and Military tradition to a later time or trade.
Research like this on full speed:

Magnetism
Theory of Gravity
Metallurgy
(enter IA, watch our free tech)
Steam
Electricity
Replaceable Parts

I hadn't considered it earlier, but we can control our borders. Tell 'em to get out. If they declare, then, to quote Ben Grimm:
It's clobberin' time!

Your defensive plans sound good.

I can't fault the research path either. I would consider Navigation and Magellan's Voyage if it made a difference in transit time from Germany to overseas. If it doesn't make a difference, then we don't need it.

So maybe we should begin to select our invasion sites now and then decide on Navigation.

By the time we invade the other continent, we will have transports, which renders Navigation moot. I agree with Thinktank, lets stick to necessary techs. At some point, we'll want the ToE, so we might go for Scientific Method after Steam Power, then go for other techs. I would prefer to trade for Replaceable Parts with Scientific Method after we build the ToE, unless we are in a big war, there is no rush there. I would go for Industrialization for factories and coal plants while the ToE builds and we can get Hoover Dam right after with a decent pre-build. But of course thats a ways off, we still are late medieval.

I've played. Highlights: we are fighting a defensive war against the Mongols and against the Vikings who allied with the Mongols 3 turns ago. Nothing we can't handle, we scored 30-6. Selling physics at the right time netted us about 100gpt, 2 luxes, navigation, and horses. So we are building knights now. I formed a second MDI army from our empty one to go out pillaging the Mongol and Viking military resources, I'm not sure if that's within the variant. If not we can still withdraw it since it has not pillaged anything yet (though it is standing on the Viking iron right now). Other than that I have only been fighting units inside our borders. We have JS Bach's Cathedral in Leipzig and Newton's University in Frankfurt. We have entered the IA and our free tech was medicine. And we are in turn 1 of our Golden age. That was sort of accidental, I never realized that finishing Newton's University would give us our GA. :( On the other hand, having the GA at the start of the IA is not a bad moment. With the 5 luxes we have now (2 imports) we can do 4 turn research (steam in 4). If we can research 5 IA techs in our GA including Scientific Method, we will have 7 IA techs in 20 turns, that will basically fix our tech lead for the rest of the game. I think we should research steam, electricty, RP, Industrialization and Sci Meth in our GA. And start a prebuild for ToE very soon.

Turnlog coming up (but probably not before tomorrow).

Pillaging is fine.
And we are in turn 1 of our Golden age. That was sort of accidental, I never realized that finishing Newton's University would give us our GA. :(
No problem. I've had that happen to me before; trigger a Golden Age by building Wonders when I didn't expect it. At first I was shocked because I thought the game was messed up. Then I was embarassed because it was my own fault. :cry:

Four turn research is a good thing, so let's maximize it while we can. :goodjob:

Looks like a productive turnset.

Didn't we get an unexpected GA in CBob03? No problem, we just research like mad scientists:) Pillaging is fine by me, it could be considered a defensive act. Looks like we are getting closer to using our panzers.

maybe the golden age was a good one... it usually takes about 10-15 turns for industrial age techs at the beggining and we might be able to get them in 4-6 :) maybe its a good thing.

I will be out of town until next Monday, so please skip me if my turns come up.

I suppose that puts me up. I can get started probably tomorrow night. Will get the save and take a look.

I finished this last night, but haven't had time to get the results posted. All went well, except no MGLs. This defensive only warfare is weird! In an ordinary game, the Vikings would be pwned. Their turn is coming, once we get to our trigger. Techwise, I finished Steam Power and Industrialization in 4 turns each, with Electricity in 2. Anyway, lets let the turn-log speak:

Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over. Everything looks fine. Finish moving some workers. Bombard and kill 2 Berserks, 1 MDI, leaving no one exposed.

Civilian units:
Workers 17
Slaves 27
Military units:
Archers 2
Swords 2
Longbows 1
Musketman 11
Knights 3
Trebuchets 7
Armies 2, 2 MDI
Medieval Infantry 22
Ancient Cavalry 9
Ships:
Galley 1
Frigate 1

Press enter=>

IBT: A Keshik comes out the fog near Cologne.
A Berserk kills a regular Musket guarding artillery stack.
Konigsberg Knight=>Knight.

Turn 1, 860 AD: Kill the berserk. Kill the Keshik.
Pillage Viking Iron, move on to their Horses.

IBT: Keshiks out of Fog kill a Musket and an elite MDI, another Musket beats an attacking Berserk.
Berlin Knight=>Musket.
Leipzig University=>Bank.

Turn 2, 870 AD: Incredibly unbeatable Viking MDI defeats a Knight and a aCav before succumbing to a Longbow.
Pillage Viking Horses, move toward their Saltpeter. Pillaging these guys will make little difference, as berserks require no resources.
Send the other army to pillage the Mongols.

IBT: Some more Keshiks drop by, also a pike.
Grand River Library=>Marketplace.
Heidelburg Frigate=>Frigate.
Cologne Knight=>Musket.

Turn 3, 880 BC: Lose a Knight on a Keshik, my RnG luck is horrible.
Next Knight wins clean.

IBT: Vikings want to negotiate, have nothing to offer.
4 Keshiks move in.
Steam Power arrives, next is Industrialization in 4 turns. A careful search of the map reveals nary a stinking lump of coal on the entire continent, bad news for our industrial future. I see 3 sources on the other continent, 1 Arab, 2 Babylonian.
Salamanca Musket=>Library.
Berlin Musket=>Knight.
Hamburg Knight=>Knight.
Konigsberg Knight=>Knight.
Munich Knight=>Knight.

Turn 4, 890 AD: Move some units for defensive reasons.
Bombard and kill all 4 Keshiks, no losses, 1 retreat by them.

IBT: Cleo demands contact with the Mongols, I say no, she backs down.
1 Keshik enters our territory, 2 more at the border.
Berserk kills exposed Knight, no retreat.

Turn 5, 900 AD: Bombard and kill the Keshik clean, Knight promotes.

IBT: EKeshik retreats on a Musket at Cologne, another enters without attacking.
Mongol pike continues moving deeper in, I will kill him on the flat.
Berserk enters our territory too. Also see a wandering Viking galley. Possibly carrying a berserk?
Berlin Knight=>Knight.
Frankfurt Bank=>Cannon.
Heidelburg Frigate=>Frigate.
Cologne Musket=>Harbor.
Hannover Knight=> Cannon.
Akwesasne Courthouse=>Marketplace.

Turn 6, 910 AD: Kill the 2 Keshiks clean. Pillage Viking Saltpeter. Until they hook them back up, they have no strategic assets.

IBT: Another Keshik drops by. Pike finally on grass.
Leipzig Bank=>Cannon.
Konigsberg Knight=>Knight.
Allegheny Marketplace=>Bank.

Turn 7, 920 AD: Kill the Keshik, then the pike, which nets a promotion.
Kill 1 Berserk threatening workers. Redline Viking Galley.

IBT: Redlined Galley lands a Sword. Several berserks move, but not in our territory. Same with Mongol troops.
Industrialization arrives, next is Electricity in 4 at -73gpt.
Salamanca Library=>Marketplace.
Berlin Knight=>Factory.
Hamburg Knight=>Factory.
Frankfurt Cannon=>Factory.
Munich Knight=>Factory.
Cologne Harbor=>Factory.

Turn 8, 930 AD: Kill a Mongol Longbow threatening workers clearing jungle with eKnight clean, no leader.
Kill Viking eSword with Knight, losing 2 hp.
Pillage Mongol Horses.

IBT: 2 Keshiks and Longbow drop by.
3 Berserks threaten some workers.
Leipzig Cannon=>Factory.
Heidelburg Galleon=>Galleon.
Nuremberg Bank=>Factory.
Hannover Cannon=>Factory.
Bremen Knight=>Library.

Turn 9, 940 AD: Kill 3 Berserks with 2 promotions.
Kill a Mongol Longbow threatening other workers with eKnight, no leader.
Bombard and kill the 2 Keshiks and Longbow with elites, again no leader.
Trade Music Theory to Babylon for their WM and 16 gold, confirming my suspicion that they have 3 Coal tiles, so we could conceivably hook 1 extra up for them, then gift them up to Steam Power and trade for it. Otherwise, we do without.

IBT: 2 Keshiks drop by. Mongol Longbow suicides on musket guarding another worker stack.
Berserk threatens other workers.
Niagara Falls Courthouse=>Aqueduct.
Konigsberg Knight=>Factory.
Centralia Marketplace=>Bank.

Turn 10, 950 AD: Sell Ivory to America for 110 gold and WM.
Bombard and kill the 2 Keshiks. Pillage Mongol Iron. One Coal found on our continent in Mongol territory. Only way to get it would be to burn the Mongol city, blockade the area to prevent resettling, colonize the coal, and make peace with Mongols and Vikings.

No pictures, as little has changed. I might post the world map tomorrow, since I bought several countries maps.

The save:

Seems like a solid set. No coal is not funny. Would there be a trade option if we gift an AI on the other continent to steam power?

CommandoBob, can you take this set? I won't be able to play til next week.

I'll take the next set. It will be the weekend before I think I can get to it. Myth01 and Rod01 have got my attention right now.

But except for the lack of Coal, which I'll look into, this should be a fairly quiet set of turns. I hope!

Babylon would be our best bet to trade up to steam to trade for Coal. Unfortunately, only one source is hooked up. We would need to sign a RoP, send workers there and hook it up for them. Otherwise, no rails until we turn loose the dogs of war.

Edit: here is a picture showing the coal.

Spoiler :
CBob04CoalSources.jpg

Good picture Overseer! I'd say let's try to do that, properly prepared. Sail some workers to the Babylon island, sign ROP, road the mountain, then gift them to steam and buy coal. In the mean time, in preparation at home, build an extra worker force (largely temoporary) and take case all workers are well positioned for a 20 turn railing frenzy.

Myth01 and Rod01 are played and posted, but it is too late tonight (almost 11 pm local time) to get a good grasp of this game. I'll try to get a handle on it tomorrow evening.

I've had a committment with Team Free in MTDG 2 and Grandma has gone to bed in my computer room before I've had a chance to get to the game. Last night she was snoozing by 7:30 pm. I hope I can tomorrow or Saturday.

    • Elephantine (8) (Egypt)

Mid Term Strategy
Make ready for war.

Short Term Strategy
Pillage Mongol and Viking resources.
Exploit our Golden Age.
Protect our workers and clear out jungles and marshes.

There was some clever planning on the thread about how to get Coal so we could build our railnet.
Also some discussion on what to learn after Eletricity.

Maybe sneak a peek at Elephantine and see about Magellan's Voyage. Can we build it sooner?
