Dahomey is an option as well.

This is tough because I found Songhai interesting in Civ5, but Mali is probably overall the more important civ despite Songhai's size. If they choose Mali again, here's hoping Musa speaks Malinké instead of Arabic this time. That said, I guess I'll throw my preference to Songhai led by Sonni Ali.

Dahomey is an option as well.
I would be shocked if they were even considered. No West or Central African civilization was unaffected by the slave trade, but Dahomey was built on the slave trade--and died with it, as well. More than any other African state, Dahomey was inextricable from the slave trade. That would make it a very, very controversial choice.

I actually agree with Buchi here. Calling the Niger bend civilizations "central" is a wild stretch - that's firmly West Africa.

The only civ in all the games to date that comes close to being central african is Kongo.

Oh, that makes sense. I guess I just saw Dahomey near the middle of Africa and thought, "close enough." :p

Well as others had already stated I was already prepared to see Kongo and Angola on the poll, instead of Mali and Songhai which are West Africa?

Anyway of course I voted for Mali. Benin would be another interesting choice for the Coast.

But for something from Central Africa I'd like to see Angola, that is the Kingdom of Angola led by Ana Nzinga, as something new.

Despite successfully resisting Portuguese occupation, they essentially did it through a war of attrition. That wouldn't translate to a very attractive civ ability...

I don't know much about them, I just thought of something different than Kongo returning again.
It also seems like she is a popular request.

I mean, returning "again"?

They've been in exactly one game. We could let them return once before taking issue with them returning again XD

(And I mean, really they're kind of the obvious choice for that region).

The way I see it, Kongo should be the go to Central African civ, occasionally replaced by another (but let them have two turns first). In West Africa, meanwhile, we really need two civ slots, with Mali getting promoted to full-time series regular and another civ (Songhai, Ashante, Hausa, what have you) rotating for the second slot.

In Southern Africa, there's dozens of interesting picks (everythin to do with Zimbabwe/Mutapa, the southern parts of Swahili land...) but we'll never see any of them because my least favorite Nuclear Gandhi-grade stupid civ meme has a stranglehold on representing the region and has already gotten in about five more games than they ever warranted.

She's an interesting historical figure, but she basically used scorched earth tactics to make holding Angola economically untenable for the Portuguese. That's an interesting story but maybe not the greatest civ choice. "Enemy units inside your territory utterly destroy your economy, production, and food--but they suffer -20 combat strength and quadruple their upkeep!" :shifty:

I'd like to see a Nigerian civilization in the next installment. A Hausa or Yoruba empire would be a fresh indunction to the franchise and it would not overlap much with Songhai or Mali, leaving room for those as well.

Note that this would also apply to Benin, as this was a Yoruba empire, I believe?

Alternatively, the Ashanti have a lot going for them as well as a potential culture Civ.

I'd love a Hausa civ just because their language is really cool. :D

Sorry if that came across like I disliked Kongo. I don't. I just thought Angola might be an interesting alternative considering they both probably wouldn't be included. I'd like either one.

Anyway it seems like I'm the only one actually still talking about Central Africa while everyone else is still talking about West Africa. :crazyeye:

I mean the thread IS about west africa as written by OP. He just mislabeled the region XD.

Nothing against Songhai, but I find Mali more interesting and would like it to become a staple of the series. Although I think they are not from Central Africa. :p

And it's just as well: Actually Central Africa has very few good candidates, until you cross the continent and get into the Zimbabwe - Mupangubwe orbit or the Ajuran/Angouche Sultanates in the Horn.

In West Africa, though, how about Kanem-Bornu? The Saifwa Dynasty lasted over 700 years, a world's record, and they were the first west African state to acquire and exploit both iron and horses - in fact, were even more of a cavalry-heavy military force than either Mali or the Songhai.

Debatably western african, since a lot of it was in modern Chad which is, in fact, generally considered Central Africa lol

Definitely a strong candidate for the rotating cast of second West African civilization, once Mali take its proper place as a series staple.

Maybe Buganda with Naval focused and some utility from lakes (in general it would be interesting if lakes were expanded to more than just 2 to 6 tiles of inland water tile, also could help civs like Aztec to go with a more agricultural focus and allow new civ that also have revelance with lakes to their kits like Finland and Muisca)
