Scamp is right. It's not that much really. With 20 Gigs you could pretty much game nonstop for the month and not bust your cap. I have Videotron with a 10 up 20 down cap. The only time I've busted my limit was when I downloaded a lot of games and movies in a month.

Yeah I got the same plan. We busted it a few times already. Good news is that they don't seem to ever charge you more than 30$ in "fines". Yeah. These companies are major suckage. I wonder why they keep boasting about how fast the downloads are with their services. I mean, yeah, it's quite fast, but if you really use that speed, like every day, you're going to bust that 20 gigs in a matter of days.

I got a mail one day from old provider Comcast. They were saying they'd be introducing monthly dowload limits, but they made a point to specify that online gamerz wouldn't be affected. LOL.

Rubrum here, the CnB TF2 server is kindda fun but it's the first place I play where there is such a constant stream of incoming voice audio from players (or just music through that channel). I wonder if that translates in many megabytes of download per hour. Might seem like a weird question, but my ISP (and most of those in Quebec really) are nazis and only allow 20 gigs of download per month (unless I paid like 60$ per month for internet or whatever their monopoly wants to charge).

1 minute of music sampled with 44kHZ and encoded with 64kbs (values for an average online radio stream) only uses ~500kB. Using this as a conservative estimate for the bandwidth use of TF2's voice stream gives you over 600 hours of gaming before you hit the 20Gb limit.
This is an conservative estimate, as speech only requires a sample rate of 8kHZ to remain understandable, so the actual bandwidth usage will work out to much less than 500kb/min.

Yeah that seems about right, although I do other things with my internet than playing online games. And we're two computers always connected to the internet at the same time.

I find it rather pathetic that around here anyway, ISPs are so draconian on their limits to download. I mean, they're just not allowing us to follow the market that the internet is going for, like paying to rent movies online (download) to watch on your computer, or paying to download music. Could it be because one of the major players in ISPs around here (Videotron) is also the owner of one of the biggest movie rental stores chain in the province? In a way, if they allowed people to download more stuff, they may end up losing on the whole DVD rental side of things. This is kind of unethical. Canada has an extremely crappy telecom business. Just ask anyone with a cellphone. Jeez, weren't they about to charge us for RECEIVING text messages recently?

Again, this makes my blood boil. At this point, we shouldn't even be talking about speed, all people do is complain or talk or discuss about which ISP is the fastest, screw that, they're all fast enough, that's not the problem.

Lots of telecomunicatinos companies in north america basically rape your wallet. Cell phones are especially rediculous, a friend of mine in the US is charged for recieving texts (or at least if she opens them, not sure exactly) and has a limit of 500 free texts (both ones she sends, and ones she RECIEVES, which is rediculous, what if some idiot starts spamming you and then you have to pay $50?). Last fall / late summer I rea an article where an internet company in the states was testing download caps in one town in Texas iirc.

In BC unless you live on a road that has cable hooked up, your only chocie is dial up (anyone who sues that is an idiot, honestly, unless they don't have another choice) or Telus 'highspeed' (at least, Telus is the only other provider I know of). I think they used to have 4 plans, but only have three now, (for homes), $15, 25 and 30. The difference between the $25 and $39 is download/upload speeds, and you get 10 instead of 5 useless webmail accounts, which have a horrible spam filter. But they do both have a 60gb download/upload usage with $2/additional GB used.

TF2 uses 11khz for mic speech

Yes, we can all agree Canadian internet service has a long way to come. On another note, when are we going to have the next CFC TF2 meetup?
Hopefully not tomorrow. I have to read at a quizbowl tournament.

I'm free for the other remaining January weekends though.

That alone is going to make me like comcast less and less and making me wanna shop for an ISP that does not impose such limits and/or charge you for an additional Gig over the limit.

I wonder that too. Any time between Friday to Saturday is good for me (Those are my days off from work anyway)
