Challenge! Decode this text

Don't forget it's a specific form of Quenya.

The problem with Quenya, and other alphabet from Tolkien, is the existence of different variants.

Here is mine (I have extended some rules to use in my own RPG).

I like this system, because one you know the alphabet, it's not very difficult to read (I won't say you can read it as fast as standard alphabet, but let says 2-3 time slower), so you don't need an algorithm to understand.

But when you use a standard font instead of the Tengwar font, it turns it into something quite ununderstanble.

And the substitution rume is very hard to infer, because character in the cypher do not correspond directly to letter in our alphabet.
Beside, Quenya is more phonetic.

I have played numerous RPG but never known anyone to learn a language for them.

Would it not have been much easier if we knew the cipher text was to be considered in the context of a Middle Earth RPG?

MS Word is not installed so that doc file is no use. First word...

Quenya: ndoogwan
Sandarin: oodangwn
English: otheagn

Huh? Never mind. Steph, are there any more tips? :crazyeye:

First, you could have asked questions about the context, I would have answered.
Second, it's not a Middle Earth RPG, it's my RPG.

Par le Fer et par le Verbe

I have little life, it seems

The start reads: "Dogan has been following the orcs tracks for"
I don't have much time now, though. Steph, care to post the rest now that I've shown I can solve it?

Ok, end of the torture.

Here is the full text. Only the beginning was encoded.

Dogan had been following the Orcs’ tracks for days and he was winning over them.
Usually, the few Gralgs that wandered through these lands were not dangerous and mostly spent their time hunting and storing for the feasts in honour of Ghorzol, the God of Eating.
But these Orcs had left tracks that did not fool Dogan: his tracking skill assured him he was following four Vugdushs, worshipping Glubark, the God of Killing. Orcs are naturally tougher than humans, but with all the years he had spent striding this country, Dogan could endure longer runs. He caught up with them by night.

They were seated by a fire. A frightened young woman was bound to a tree. “This is the burden that made their tracks deeper” Dogan thought. Unfortunately, he did not have a bow, but only his sword and a dagger. Silently, he crept nearer. His knowledge of their language was limited, but he still could catch a few words.
Apparently, two of them wanted to kill the girl now, in order to be able to go into friendly territory quicker. The third one, their leader, didn’t look like he agreed…
“Three Orcs? Where is the fourth?”. Dogan froze and inspected his surroundings. Nobody. Maybe he had gone hunting.
Dogan crept even nearer. The Orcs were apparently so caught in their discussion that their vigilance was lessened. They did not notice him.
When he was close enough, Dogan raised his dagger and threw it on the closer Orc while launching his attack. Wounded in his shoulder, the Orc screamed but did not fall. The others turned, but Dogan was already on them and he stroke the second, a small one. The latter could not dodge. Thanks to the violence of the blow, enhanced by Dogan’s charge, the sword got though the Orc’s leather vest, killing him in an instant.
The leader was already charging at Dogan,, his axe in hand. Putting his group combat skill in good use, Dogan moved, leaving the dead Orc hinder his leader’s attack, and rushed at the first Orc. The latter managed to parry one blow, then two, but as Dogan hurled a particularly powerful one, the Orc’s wounded shoulder betrayed his strength and he could only lessen the deadly blow he received upon his skull.
Dogan turned around in time. The leader was upon him. Dogan barely parried the axe, but his balance was not perfect. The Orc kept the advantage and stroke again and again. But Dogan was better with the sword, and soon he managed to reverse the positions.
Right then, Dogan heard a sound from behind him. The fourth Orc!
Dogan concentrated, trying to remember his training sessions with a blindfold, in order to locate the opponent from the noise he made and ‘feel’ his presence.
Now! Dogan stepped backwards, putting some distance between him and the leader. Then he slipped his sword underneath his arm and stroke forcefully behind him. A smouldered sound, followed by grumblings told him he had hit his target. He turned around, swiping his sword at the Orc whom he managed to decapitate.
The leader had managed to take the advantage again, and hit Dogan on his leg. The pain was sharp, but Dogan managed to control it in order not to lose ground. With a wounded leg, Dogan could not dodge the blows as efficiently as before, and he was loosing blood. The combat needed to be ended soon. The Orc tried a feint and raised his axe to strike. Dogan knew about this feint! He launched his counter-attack, sending a blow right into the Orc’s throat as he was vulnerable. But carried away by his own momentum, the Orc managed to cause yet another bad wound on Dogan’s shoulder.
Dogan had won, but he was seriously wounded. He collapsed next to a tree and fainted, being out of it for a short time When he opened his eyes, he felt weak and incapable of tending to his wounds himself. He then put himself in a deep state of mediation, and let his conscious mind float around him, letting the Essence come to him. It was everywhere in this forest. When he managed to sense it, he turned his mind to his own body, prodding his wounds and directed the Essence towards them. He shivered as the strength of life invaded him, healed his wounds.
When his injuries were no more, he went on drawing from the Essence to regain his strength. Eventually, he managed to stand up, but his healing spells had left his mental reserves exhausted, and he would not be able to use his magic powers before he rested.
He stepped towards the young woman, who looked at him with endless admiration.
