I am new to the Civfanatics forum. Although
I have been playing Civ2 for five years
( mostly on Playstation, but now only on PC ), but have not had any conversations with
other Civ2 players. I am concerned by what the concensus is as to what constitutes
cheating. My attitude while playing is to
take every advantage I can, but I want to
conform to the same standards as everyone
else. I believe top level Civ players should
conduct themselves the same as professional
chess players. Any comments? Thanks.

I have only one stipulation on cheating. Don't use the cheat menu. That's it, anything goes.

when you play singlegames it´s all up to you. if you think cheating is stupid, then just leave it. if you think you can´t win a game without reopening huts (for example) then go ahead. just do it. I even think this kind of cheating can help you getting a feeling for the game and the AI you´re dealing with and finally making you a better player.
of course your goal should be finallay winning a game without the need of cheating. but as I said, that´s no one´s but your business.

multiplaying, however, is a completely different thing. through the recent years a couple of etiquettes have been developed. and the developement is still in progress. I think cheating in civ2MP is almost impossible. all kinds of cheating I can think about are detectable and have been detected. cheat-o-matic, for example, is a joke.
just my two cents.

Unfortunately,there are more ways to cheat in MP than you can shake a stick at.Cheat-O-Matic is ancient.

There really is no way to stop a "good" cheater.

Actuall Smash not true. They'll always leave some sort of clue to what they did no matter how good they are. The only one you can't really detect is if someone is looking at the map unless they do something really out of the ordinary.

I knew A guy once that managed to run two versions of Civ at the same time. So revealin a radom multiplayer map was nothing to him, but I don't think he ever did it, He said it wouldn't be as much of a challenge to win the game if he knew he had a single better edge such as the map. For me cheatin is a no no, I want Civ to delievop like chess, It would be great if the Civ3 teams could find a way to elliminate cheating as a factor, but that's a pretty big order!

Cheats are bad FULLSTOP

I have a problem with "no cheating" when my goal is a high score. All of the random events throughout the game make it too much of a crap shoot. Instead, I want to try out a strategy to see if it this best for the situation (level, map, opponents) at hand.
In this context, what's allowable cheating? Reloads and map peeking but that's it.
And how did I lower my morals so far? It happened soon after starting to play Civ. I had a good map and got wiped out early. I said, "I can do better," and restarted from my earliest save. I changed my decisions based on what I knew about the world under the black. Effectively, I had just done my first map peeking (and reload).
There, I fell better now.

Here is a simple statement of fact...

If you are relying on reloading from a save and playing on again, whether it's to overcome a random event (spy didn't destroy the walls, or didn't like the hut) or whether it's because you now know the map, it's symptomatic of one thing: you are using the wrong strategy.

BigWheel talks about the random events making a crap shoot of the game. Well guess what... that's a bit like real life really! I don't rely on random events going my way in real life. I make allowances for them not to. But I still take risks. I am either prepared to accept the consequences - good or bad, or I have a strategy which compensates for the randomness.

So how to apply this to Civ? Well don't send a single 'irreplacable' unit to open a hut. Don't have a single spy to break the walls - have an army of them. If you haven't got these options, why not? What's wrong with your planning?

Take risks, but know the risks you're taking, and accept the consequences.
In my view, cheating is another name for being a coward.

i like civ because it's a stragy game..

cheating = no stratagy

sure we can all put on god mode but it's no fun

besides.. you can't do a TRUE EVIL LAUGH everytime you slaughter another civ when you cheat :_)

besides.. when something doesn't go your way.. instead of reloading.. it will make you more mad and make you want to raze there towns even MORE

MUAHAHAHAAHAAA!!!!

Use the reload if:

Something truely unfair happens, like an enemy phalanx held out against 3 dragoons.

Do not reload if:
Something a bit unfair happens, like an enemy pikemen in walls take out 3 dragoons.

I save after every turn. I use reload for three reasons only:
(1) Normal rejoin of a game in progress from a previous session;
(2) When my computer crashes mid turn (this usually happens two or three times a session

);
(3) When I'm analysing a game after I've finished it to work out how I could have done better.

I have also been known to think about reloading after compensating for Civ's auto-goto bug by manually moving a howie 70 squares along a transcontinental railroad and then making my own stupid typo-mistake and sticking it on top of a railless mountain! But with 60 other howies to choose from, what's the point? Play on!

I use AI play as a training ground for my multiplayer game. When I am playing alone I cheat, beg, steal, lie, look at maps, reload, reveal map, you name it! I do it!

I even save in, say, 1ad and play untul 1000ad and save again, then I will play from 1ad three or four times until I have worked out what I should have done. then I will play to 1500ad and do the same thing another three times.

This way I can see the effects of different governments, different improvements and also gives me a good bearing on when and when not to attack.

My 'real' game is against 'real' people on multiplayer. That is where I put all of what I have learned to action.

I don't consider it cheating because the AI can't beat me anyway. So I may as well make my own game out of it.
