After reading the ‘EU to end China arms embargo’ thread, I want to gauge CFC Euro opinion here. (others welcomed to answer) What if China launches invasion of Taiwan, unprovoked. Would you want your country to help save this Democracy, with your own soldiers?

I would call for an invasion of China, toppling of government, and a return to Imperialist values... bwahaha-!! :mischief:

Yes, and I'm not European. We've defeated communist aggression in Korea, we can do it again in Taiwan if necessary.

The Korean war of the 1950's was a draw - Unless history has been heavily revised in Canada?

I am against fighting China - Such a war would end all human endeavours.

Only a moronic government would sanction a battle like that.

And it would soon be ousted from power.

In my honest opinion, I would have to say NO.

War with China would last for soooooo many years, even if other countries are involved. 1 Billlion people ain't going down easy, and I think they'll all fight for China and not neccessarily for their Comm leader.

And for what, Taiwan. It will suck for them, but eventually, the Taiwanese will accept that they are a part the China, I mean they are Chinese and the CHinese will not treat them so badly, except for taking away some freedoms. It won;t be like what the Iraqis were doing to the Kuwaitis.

Anyway, if Taiwan has to be scarificed for peace with China, I say good-bye Taiwan.

I don't think starting a war between the western world and China I a very good idea either. A lot of people whill be killed and stuff, the war will last long and that's not fun. Why does the west think it should interfere in every war on this planet.

I don't think China will be so stupid to invade Taiwan btw.

True, but I want to know how far a person would want to risk their people for a small Democracy against a BIG-BOY.

China is/has emerging/ed on the world stage as a serious and dominant power and (wants to be seen as) trustable entity. Invading or annexing Taiwan is most likely not going to happen, regardles of nationalistic feelings and swelling of pride.

Although, sacrificing anything to keep the peace (as was mentioned earlier) is the same problem that got Europe and the World in trouble in the 1930's/40's. What needs to be done, is to let the countries in question solve it on their own terms.

If help or mediation is requested, then we (as Westerners) go in and offer our aid, whether it's military, diplomatic, or economic. 1 Billion Chinese is not an answer, 10 Million soldiers is not one either, nor is the preservation of democracy. The world is too small nowadays to willy nilly hurl wars and border disputes around. The global economy and ready availabilty of disseminated information forces all countries to have some aspect of a global government and responsibility.

Also, going in to a place we are not wanted hasn't worked so well as of late, so let's just back off and work within our own borders for a time.

My 2 cents

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would in no way resemble the Korean War, in my opinion. As Kublai Khan, Philip II, Napoleon, and Hitler all found out, land armies' effectiveness stops at the edge of any significant body of water which they cross only in the absence of an opposing naval power. Right now the US Seventh Fleet is that naval power, and even if Taiwan were an uninhabited parking lot the invasion would succeed or fail based upon which side won naval and air supremacy, which is traditionally not as manpower-intensive as pure land battles.

I think it is time many misinformed people ditched the 1930's stereotype of a rural China.

The place is a growing powerhouse, and soon won't commie at all.
It would be most unwise for the West to pick a fight with them.

Economic suicide anyone?

Seeing as we cannot keep 3rd world countries (Afghanistan/Iraq) under wraps;
Honestly, what chance have we got in China?

This is not true. The ROK is a democratic nation, which means the main objective was met by stopping the north's aggression into the south. The 2nd objective was not met, which was to take the DPRK.

i fail to see how "democracy" has anything to do with this. it's all about land and territorial claim. i mean if an inland chinese province suddenly declares independence and calls itself a democracy, would any one try to support it militarily? china sees taiwan as a part of itself, and there is a 100% chance of invasion if taiwan is stupid enough to declare independence.

the US also has a clever escape clause. it opposes "unilateral action on either side". so if taiwan just declares independence, the US can say "that's unilateral action, we will not support it"

also it will be suicide for the US fleet to get involved. there are more than enough chinese cruise missiles to sink the entire 7th fleet, as pentagon's own military simulations have shown before

I'm a non-european, and even if I know that it would never happen, I sure wish that my country would send troops to defend Taiwan.

Unlike the cynics here, I still believe in defending democracy.

I don't look forward to war against the asian giant, but if they invade Taiwa they'll be the aggressors.

And remember - technically China is rebel province of Taiwan, and not the other way around.

I sincerely hope that WWIII doesn't start over an island populated by rebels. If China is not left alone for the most part in its sphere of influence, we may awaken an animal that we cannot fight effectively.

Regardless, even if every country in Europe sent a substantial force to defend Taiwan, it would only increase the blood spilled over the matter.

You have any cites for the Pentagon's military simulations? (I'm not necessarily disputing it, I'm just looking for more information - everything I've seen indicates that the Seventh Fleet could defend Taiwan.)
