Cirith Ungol NOTW [Game Thread]

Stats Time:

I'm a bit concerned about this, really. It's not normal to have a mafia game where the people can't normally vote for half of the players in the game.

In hindsight this was a poorly made setup. I will explain why in the postgame. However, the reason for this rule was to prevent the stronger team from having an extreme advantage by lynching the weaker team into oblivion. The reason that you couldn't sellect your opponent in battle from the other team was that that would have made items like the mithril shirt basically useless.

Frodo:

You are Frodo, the ringbearer. You have come far on your quest through trial and adversity. Now mount doom looms ahead. If the ring is destroyed, it would be a great victory for the forces of good, but if you fail, Sauron’s evil will darken the lands eternally. The journey through Cirith Ungol has been difficult. Gollum betrayed you, by leading you into the spider’s cave. The orcs have taken you prisoner, but their squabble has given some hope, to complete the quest you were entrusted with and save the free people of middle earth.

Personal Ability: NA, instead see faction ability.

Faction Ability: Each night, you and Sam may choose a player to kill in your effort to escape the tower. At the start of the game you must also choose who holds the Ring, Sting, and the Phial of Galadriel. You can always change which one of you holds these items, so if one of you is about to get lynched, give the stuff to the other one!

Strength: 1

Personal Goal: Eliminate the orcs to escape the tower. (The number of orcs must be equal or less than the number of hobbits to escape)

Tip: There are forces here aside from you and the orcs. Gollum is still after you, desperately searching for the one ring. Moreover, Shelob is injured, but still alive and will likely try to feed upon you or the orcs.

You are Sam, Frodo’s loyal companion on the great quest to destroy the ring. Before you left the Shire, you were a simple hobbit gardener. Now it feels like the weight of the free world rests on your shoulders. However, recent events have given you hope of success. With the spider stopped for now, we merely need to escape from the tower.

You are Shelob, a creature older than these mountains, older than this fort and the orcs with their petty squabbles. You are a mighty spider of the ancient brood of Ungoliant, perhaps the last of your kin. For eons you have weaved webs of darkness in this lair, eating all who dare pass, but lately, you have had nothing to feed on but tasteless orcs. That all changed when two Halflings came here. Good food they promised to be, but they carried elvish steel. You are wounded, but not defeated, and you need to eat to regain your strength.

You can choose a player per night and kill them.

Personal Ability:
Once per turn, day or night, you can select a player. If he is killed, you receive any items he possessed. The one ring is an item that starts out with the hobbits. Alternatively, you can scan a player to see if they own the ring.

You are the leader of the orcs from Minas Morgul. The bungling soldiers who garrison this fort have captured two tiny prisoners, but in a display of utter incompetence, have been unable to hold them. Moreover, these fools have claimed the mithril armor of the prisoners, even though it is obvious that they will be unable to do anything with it. It is clear that this tower needs a leadership change (and you need a pay raise). Besides, putting the mithril armor to good use cannot hurt the cause of Mordor!

You are the leader of the garrison of Cirith Ungol, an orc warrior in loyal service to the army of Mordor. You have clear orders, the prisoners possessions are to be confiscated and taken to Barad Dur, while they themselves are to be left unharmed. Unfortunately, these scums from Minas Morgul do not seem to understand these obvious commands. The disturbance they have caused has let the prisoners escape. Now the prisoners have reclaimed their foul Elvish weapons, they once more pose a threat. To make matters worse, it is your responsibility to stop the rebelling Morgul-scum. Given this, it may be necessary to interpret the orders not to harm the prisoners with some lenience, since your position at the head of this fortress is on the line.

Items:
All of them ended up in the hands of BSmith. The One Ring was spent in the day 4 battle for BSmith and in the day 1 battle for Nintz.
Spoiler :
Mithril shirt:
cu10.png

Valuable armor of mithril, light yet durable, and the subject of the squabble between the orcs, this shirt has helped get Frodo through this far and will give whoever bears it a better chance in any battle.

Effect: +2 Strength to bearer. Whoever wins the battle on day one will get this item.

Spoiler :
The One Ring To Rule Them All:
cu9.png

"Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul". One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.
Forged in the fires of Orodruin, it is the reason for Sauron’s survival and return. In it lays great power, but it corrupts whoever wields it.
This artifact starts in the hands of the Hobbits. They must vote on who carries it.

Effect: The ring grants victory to Gollum and the orc factions. Due to the rings ability to make the bearer invisible, anyone who has the ring can survive a situation in which they would otherwise die. This effect can only be used once per bearer (using it more often will alert the Nazgul to its presence). This item cannot be dropped, but can be traded.

Spoiler :
Phial of Galadriel
cu11.png

The Phial that give light in dark places. It truly gave light to the hobbits as they passed through Shelob’s lair, one of the darkest places imaginable. Indeed, this seemingly simple bottle of glowing liquid has proven the salvation of the ring quest, and perhaps the free people of middle Earth.

Effect:
Shelob cannot carry this item. Whoever carries it cannot be killed by Shelob. If Shelob is voted to hold it, this item is destroyed. It starts in the hands of the hobbits.

Spoiler :
Sting:
cu12.png

An ancient elvish long knife made long ago, during the first age. This blade was given to Frodo by Bilbo, and has served the ring quest well. More than a mere weapon, it glows blue when orcs are near (which, around here is almost always) and is hated by the goblins as a weapon of Elvish craft. As is fitting for a blade of Gondolin, Sting could easily cut through the webs of the offspring of Ungoliant, including the spiders of Mirkwood and Shelob herself.

Effect:
+2 Strength to bearer. This item starts in the hands of the hobbits.[/QUOTE]

Divided town models are hard to balance. For Only the Strong, I used a damage system and had distinct votes for both damaging your own team and damaging the other. That worked ok, but it's still a challenge.

Heh. Mafia victory after all. :p

Now that I can finally post I would like to say good game overall, though the final votes were clearly somewhat confusing and poorly structured compared to the early game. I think that if you had a much more full roster it would have gone much better, but you should have allowed the dead to speak. That seems to help games survive longer from what I can tell.

Also, I find it very ironic that my first Mafia role had my RNG lynched day 1, pretty much preventing me from actually participating much.

But who was Shagrat?

So yeah, I'm still not sure about this. I've seen split town games before and don't have a problem with them, but even in ones like Autolycus's NOTW, you could do things to the other town. You really couldn't in this game.

List of out of thread events:
Note: I will not write about lynches unless something special happened on the lynch
Day 1:
The main battle was between Strength 3 Gorbag (SouthernKing) and strength 2 Orc (Secret Scribe). SK won the Mithril armor, Secret Scribe dies.

The initial item distribution amongst the hobbits was: Nintz has the Ring, and the Phial, while BSmith has Sting

The ring would save Nintz from being lynched on day 1.

Night 1:
Shelob kills Askthepizzaguy
The Hobbits kill Autolycus
Gollum does nothing
__________________________________
Day 2:
Nintz gives all of his items to BSmith
As a result the battle is between Strength 5 Gorbag (SK) vs. Strength 1 Frodo (Nintz). SK wins
__________________________________
Night 2:
Sam kills topsecret
Shelob kills SouthernKing and receives the mithril shirt
Gollum scans Robbiecon for the ring. Robbiecon does not have the ring.
______________________________________
Day 3:
Str 2 Orc Choxorn battles Str 2 orc Robbiecon. Robbiecon wins by RNG
______________________________________
Night 3:
Gollum scanned Visorslash, who did not have the ring
both Sam and Shelob targeted Darth Ceaser (aka Gollum) killing him
________________________________________
Day 4:
There was actually a minor error in the battle vote: Shagrat (aka MartinLuther/Secret Scribe) was a tiebreaker, so his position as the combatent from Cirith Ungol should have been guaranteed from phase 1, after which he should have chosen his opponent (instead of phase 2). Thankfully, this had no effect on the game, since he was chosen to battle anyways, and got to choose between the same two candidates anyways, however, the players were denied information and this could have gone terribly wrong. Yeah, sadly I failed at GMing this game :(

Minas Morgul lynched shelob, so they would vote for the mithril shirt next turn

meanwhile, Str 3 Sam (BSmith, who was Str 3 thanks to Sting) battled Str 3 Shagrat (MartinLuther/Secret Scribe). By RNG Shagrat won, but the ring saved Sam from death.
________________________________________
Night 4:
Sam killed Visorslash
________________________________________
Day 5:
Minas Morgul tied for Lynch, item and battle. I processed the Item battle first (since in theory item distribution could change the results of the main battle and even the lynch).

This put Str 3 Sam (BSmith) against Str 2 Orc (Arrow Gamer/classical_hero)
Sam won. As a result, BSmith was now the only living candidate to receive the mithril shirt, and dcmort the only living candidate to get lynched.

I next handled the item vote, since the results of that could change the outcome of the main battle. BSmith won by virtue of everyone else not voting or dying. Hence BSmith got the Mithril Shirt

I next processed the main battle (since I had decieded that if someone was chosen both to battle and to be lynched, they would first battle, hence the battle is handled before the lynch).
In this, Strength 5 Sam (BSmith who had all the items including sting and the mithril shirt) battled strength 3 Shagrat (MartinLuther/Secret Scribe) and won.

At this point, BSmith was unkillable since he could dominate the vote in his own faction and defeat everyone in the other faction, so the game was over (before the dcmorth lynch, so dcmort survived)

GM Final Comments
The Setup:

Unfortunaly, the setup proved poorly designed. The large amount of deaths/turn killed player participation, and most normal townies could do little more than guess at the mafia. Yeah, I badly failed this. Several things could have been done to fix that:

1: The dead should have been allowed to speak. This would have benifited both town and mafia, and generally encouraged participation.

2: There should have been two townie roleblockers (1 per team) the http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Two_Watchers. They should have been weak in combat (str 1 or 0) but have the ability to roleblock someone every night. This would have benifited the towns (less death/night) but not much, since it could also save the hobbits from Gollum's scan or Shelob's kill and save Gollum/Shelob from the hobbits. Overall it would have made for a longer, more interesting game.

3: Once a tiebreaker died, the town should have voted on another tiebreaker. This would have prevented all of the confusing ties in the last few days of the game. And yes, I failed because I forget that Secret Scribe was a tiebreaker

4: For the battle, instead of my curent system, everyone should have voted for two people: someone from their own faction, and someone from the enemy faction. Then I would have added up the total votes for everybody and the most popular combatent from each faction would have then been nominated to fight (after which, comparing their relative strength would have decided the winner). This is the best option because with people just voting for combatents from their own faction (as it was now) there was no way to target people from the other facton whom you suspected. However, if people only chose a combatent from the enemy faction, then people with items like the mithril shirt would have just been bypassed, so their items would be mostly useless. If people could lynch from the other faction, then the stronger faction would just lynch the weaker faction's strongest players, a game breaker.

5: Shelob's goal should have been all-or nothing like the others, because as it was, it was to easy for shelob to acquire victory points per night of existance.
_______________________________

Note on the ending:

Despite the broken setup, this game could still have gone in several ways. Most notably, if BSmith had been lynched on the last turn the town would have won. If classical had received the mithril shirt by majority vote, then RNG would have decided the outcome. Also, interestingly if Classical had voted to lynch BSmith, then per my rules, BSmith would have 1: killed classical in battle for the item, 2: won the main battle, 3: be left as the only surviving candidate for the lynch, and hence lynched, causing a spontaneous town victory. Preventing this is why the role of tiebreaker needed to exist until the end of the game.

Shelob died 1 turn from finishing hir goal, due to an insightful town lynch. Gollum, if he had scanned BSmith correctly could have won, by claiming cop, getting Sam lynched and then stealing the ring. However, Gollum had too little time and analysis to go on, which is a product of the problems that I mentioned above.

However, the town got very lucky with their early lynch of Nintz. If Nintz had lived longer, that would clearly have reduced the town's chances.

___________________________________

Overall, I am sorry for the failed setup. I will run another mafia game one day, but with a simpler setup than this.

Whether this should be listed in statistics is for choxorn to decide. I have explained the reason for only being able to lynch from your own team above. Due to how strange/broken the setup was, it probably should not be listed IMO, just recorded as a warning to future GMs.

I'd say I have to agree with you on not counting this. I'll post about this a bit more in the statistics thread.
