Citizen allocation broken

I have had my city starve using production priority and now will lock a tile use to prevent this.

Agreed, lock a tile or two, then remember to unlock later when growth is again needed. Automated workers unfortunately can sometimes upset the balance we have achieved by tile locking!

I agree with the op - choosing production focus should not put us into starvation, leading to a decrease in City size.

So, why did Firaxis implemented automatic city management in Civilization IV?

Auto city management didn't work that well in cIV either, and if you wanted to play the higher levels, you had to do it manually... same goes for ciV. In fact, imho, apart from this starvation issue, I'd say the ciV auto city management is better than the cIV equivalent.

just go production. wait till its 1-2turns before losing a citizen. go back to food. let it almost fill up for new citizen. switch back to production. this isn't really a pressing issue.

This is the easy way to do it, which works easily and well (as long as you don't forget!).

Most people who play Emperor and above will WANT to keep an eye on what their cities are doing, especially the first 100 or so moves where it can make such a huge difference.

I think it makes sense. Remember you could sacrifice/whip population for hammers in previous civs. I guess building the pyramids wasn't that great for population growth unless they had nurseries on site for the slaves and their families.
If you don't want starvation, I think its easily managed by locking a couple of good food tiles then setting production focus after.

You can you can lock a few good food resources like cows sow the AI will not change that tyle it will only change the tyles you dont have locked!!!!

Sow if you lock 2 important food resources to dont cause starvation.The AI will move all citizens to production exept the 2 locked tyles.

BTW it could olso be that your citie dont have enough food to go 100% production thats why it allways is starving...

This does not work consistently;
... the AI will/does change the city AFTER you click next turn.

It only takes a few more clicks to lock the tiles you want vs. turning on auto-manage. Take the extra few seconds to do so every now and then and you will be pleasantly surprised how much it improves your civilization's progress. Like others have said, auto-managing is fine for settler difficulty, but the real meat of the Civ series comes from how much you can micromanage your civilization to keep it running efficiently.

Well if you tell the Governor to max production, and he chooses to "increase it as much as possible without starving anyone", he's really at risk of losing his head. Just playing it safe.

Though I would love to have population whipping again, it would give me a reason NOT to starve my own cities when everyone's pissed off, which is all the time.
