I think the Chinese City list is a prime example for being created rather quickly for Civ 1 and has since been copy+pasted to this day in the name of tradition and recognition value of the series, which of course doesn't make the list any better ;-) (or they might just have been lazy and why would something be bad with which they could get away last time... )
Honolulu was on the American list before the Polynesia civ existed and they didn't remove it afterwards. As Louis XXIV said regarding Memphis, the game will just skip it if it comes up in the list and there's already a city with that name in the game.
I view it as making Kiev a Russian city (which they didn't do, but I wouldn't be opposed to). Essentially, it represents the height of the Russian Empire, which included the Ukraine.
I'll just throw a few of these up then based on the XML. City names that already existed but have been added to the list aren't in the expansion's cities list (ex: Glasgow and Belfast are Celtic cities that were unused previously)

The Celtic cities rotate between Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cornish, Breton and Manx. There's no continental Celtic settlements as far as I can see at all, they appear to have just taken cities from the modern 'Celtic nations' without much thought as to whether they are even originally Celtic settlements.
You also get an achievement for getting Llanfairpwllgwyngyll in your empire, but it doesn't appear to work if you found the city using Attila's ability.

Thank you. Was wondering why if Dublin was the second city, where was Belfast? They're both capitals of Ireland, so I figured they'd be the second and third cities. Belfast is wayyy down the list though.

I imagine they were running with the six Celtic nations idea where Ireland & Northern Ireland are counted as single nation. They picked one city from each celtic nation in ordered sets of six and Dublin is much more prominent in Irish history.
I don't know why Cork or Limerick come before Belfast though. I don't care for this city list, Civ IV's list seemed a lot more appropriate for a Celtic civilization.

I suppose I'm being pedantic but under the Celtic list there are cities from Brittany, quite a few actually, which is "continental".... And maybe they could have thrown in a few from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.... Glace Bay and another Sydney come to mind, though I guess the latter won't work...
I also noticed under the entry for Sweden something that'll annoy modern Finns...quite a few Finnish cities....Kuopio, Lahti, Kouvola, Pori, Vaasa...Jyväskylä (this last one spelt incorrectly)....
I did mention that there were cities from Brittany* though I wouldn't think it normal practice to classify them as continental Celts seeing as (to my knowledge) they are basically British Celts who set up on the continent and speak an insular language. Perhaps they share some cities with the likes of the Gauls but that'd seem to be from coincidence.
*not sure if Breton is a good adjective for it or not, similarly for Manx.
I found a thread in the Civ4 section that showed the city list for each civ. Could someone make one for Civ5? Include Denmark also if you can. I'm especially wondering about the Polynesia list.
