The cherokee are a southern offspring of the Iroquois Civilization. They speak the Iroquois language. For anyone who wants to do a custom civ as the Cherokee Civilization here is a map showing city names for the Cherokee:

I will try to clean it up so it is more readable and Cherokee language is a dialect of Iroquois.

That's just a map of the Southeast region from Microsoft Encarta. Those names refer to peoples in those areas. I'm not an expert on this, but I don't believe all those are related to the Cherokee. Disclaimer: Native America is not my special area of knowledge, so I'll be the first to admit I might be totally wrong on this. But I don't believe these are all Cherokee. For example, a little bit of quick, undetailed research shows me that the Chickasaw and the Choctaw are of the Muskogean linguistic family, while the Cherokee are of the Iroquoian linguistic family.

(This should not be taken to mean that Cherokee is a dialect of the Iroquoian language, so sorry. That's like saying English is a dialect of German. English is a Germanic language, and Cherokee is an Iroquoian language, but that means they belong to the same language families, not that they are minor variations within the same language. This is the only fact in this post of mine that I am certain about. For the others, see my disclaimer in the previous paragraph.)

For the record, though, I made a special 21-civ-set for the North America map, and a slightly altered map with all the proper beginning sites on it, and here are the cities I provided for the Cherokee:

Tennessee, Tellico, Oconey, Hiwassee, Tugaloo, Usana, Keowee, Tocalessee, Ketoa, Cheowee, Estatoe, Stecoa, Chota, Congaree, Quanessee, Watauqa

Those were the names of the settlements on a map in a book my sister has and that I've only seen once, so I can't guarantee the accuracy of any of them. My sister has a lot of books on the Cherokee because she has a particular interest in them, since we are part Cherokee on both sides. I tend to focus more on the Viking/Germanic strain in our blood and study those people more, but she prefers the Cherokee.

First off, thank you for your post Loaf Warden. That was valuable input. I am not sure about the definition of the word dialect, it seemed to be the right one to use at the time, but you may be right that I should have just said from that family of languages.

You are right that I go this map from Encarta Encylopedia. It was listed under Cherokee so I assumed that these were Cherokee settlements in the SE region. I realize that others lived in the region as well, but these would be the Cherokee settlements I suppose.

In fact the Cherokee Nation actually had borders something like this...
<IMG SRC="http://pages.tca.net/martikw/original.gif" border=0>
but I don't give much weight to that map as being what the cherokee actually had prior to European contact. The Europeans turned all of the Native American's worlds upside down (which is a whole story in itself) and that map is just what their claims to the Europeans were. I don't think they actuall had "borders" because they beleived that the land didn't belong to any humans and therefore nobody could lay claim to it.

I still got to try to clean the graphic from Encarta up so the names can be read easier, but one I do I hope that it can be a valuable resource for people in the southeast U.S. who are interested in having a civ from thier own particular region represented in the game.

I would definitely also include the cities of Echota and New Echota as these were the capitals of the Cherokee Nation at different times. I will continue my research and refine my list of city names in the coming weeks. In the meantime feel free to add your own knowledge about this subject here.
