Civ 4 Rants Thread

I love games like that! Just the other day I got beaten to spaceship victory by a few rounds on immortal Kmod, it was really exciting and a great game. Who cares if you win or lose as long you have an interesting and tense challenge? It was definitely among the best games I have played (and for example a lot better than this huge nuclear war I fought once pre-Kmod in which the AI unleashed his entire arsenal of 30 nukes on the two remaining useless cities of my vassal .)

I also just recently had a loss at "100% winning" odds. My destroyer (with about four or five promotions) attacked a galleon or something. Pressing alt before moving said 99.9% or whatever, the combat log said 100% winning odds - I checked because I couldn't believe what I'd just seen. The galleon must have scored a lucky shot at the rudder I guess. Bismarck!

I haaaaate barbs!!!

In tonight's game as Cyrus...

I just missed the GW by one turn, even though I rushed it (I reloaded to rush it, and I STILL lost it!! WTH is up with that? I either lose it by three turns, or rush it and lose it by one??!!??!!)

I've wiped out everyone on the continent and I'm getting hit by wave after wave of barbs. My workers can't build anything without being chased away. I can't build anything but military units to try to keep up with the barbs, and I'm losing at ridiculous odds.

And I don't have Raging Barbs turned on!!! This is infuriating. I'm fogbusting as well as I can and they're crawling out of the woodwork like roaches with swords.

And I hate roaches too!!

Grrrrr.

To hell with Civ. I'm going to bed!

(Yes. I'm frustrated with the RNG right now. Can you tell?)

What'd ya do to make the barbs mad at you?

solutions: play w/ no barbs or start a new map

Is it wrong of me to laugh at your misfortune? Or actually your description of your misfortune?

Every once in a while I'll get a game like that, where the barbs prevent me from playing, but not that often. Usually jungle nightmare starts. But I must say that I have never combined clearing the AI from the continent and suffering a barb onslaught before, congratulations on that!

I'm not sure. I checked and I didn't even get a barb event. They just hate me in this game, I guess.

I think that barbs are an essential part of the game. Just not this many all at once.

I don't mind if you laugh. I think I'd laugh at someone in my predicament, too. :D

I think the one follows from the other. Should've vassalised them and kept them around at fogbusters / meatshields...

Me too.

Playing as Victoria in the early game, I have blocked Isabella into the NW corner of the huge long snaky continent we share (with a few others). K-Mod, Monarch. Izzy has 3 cities, no Copper, and no Horses. So Izzy gotta die, right? I have Horses and no Copper, so I figure a Chariot rush is called for.

Unlike Lemon, I actually got the Great Wall built, which was handy when the 6-Spearman barbarian event (the Philistines? Philanthropists? Filipinos? Something like that…) occurred. All I had at that end of my empire was 2 Chariots (didn’t have Archery) and a Warrior per city, so without the GW, I would have been mush. What those barb Spears could do for me, though, is soften up Izzy while I add to my 2 Chariots. Sure enough, the barb spears headed for one of Izzy’s border cities, with my 2 Chariots trailing them at a safe distance, and 2 others 2-3 turns behind them.

All Izzy has in her border city is a CG1 Archer. Awesome. The barbs will take it, and I'll snag it a few turns later, right?

Wrong. I had a Scout nearby to watch the show, but all I saw was that the 6 barbarians disappeared, and Izzy now had a wounded CG3 Archer in the city, plus another Archer that was presumably whipped. And a 3rd one arrived a turn later. So much for my Chariot rush.

Barb uprisings: A restart event for human players, but nothing more than free XP for the AIs.

I've seen the horse archer event devastate an AI. They're good to follow behind because they don't stay in a city once they've captured it. (at least on the occasions I've noticed) They took out three cities before attrition took it's toll. Freebies for me.

We are talking about huge empty land, are we?
If there were barb cities spawning instead of actual barbs, you'd be fine. So you were at mercy of RNG.

Fogbusting big chunk of land could be a pain. May be worth to try settle emptiness yourself ASAP.

For sure, that can happen. In my particular game, though, 6 barb Spears would have been death for me, even though they didn't scratch the paint on Izzy's spanking-new 20% culture city. :(

Thus the rant.

I just had the opposite experience, a strange lack of barbs. The laughing came later.

In my game I walled off Ragnar on our little island, thus leaving half the continent undeveloped. Strangely, I only saw a few barbs, 2 Warriors, 1 Axeman that disappeared, and 2 HA's. I have no idea why there were so few barbs, I deserved many more for my lack of busting. I guess my barbs found a portal to your game.

You can still laugh at me, however, as later on Boudica landed something like 10 Grenadiers, 10 Cannons, 10 Calvary and took my capital which was defended by 1 Warrior. I had been stealing techs like crazy from Hammurabi (who had filled that barb void I left too long while attending the Viking threat) and ramping up for a space shot and thought that Boudica had her hands full with the reoccurring wars on her own continent. Famous last words. The irony was that I had the ability to build Artillery and Infantry and could have fended her off if I had taken the trouble to actually build any. So laugh away!

Side note: Ragnar, as my vassal, was out teching me with one city, one city. I was actually pleased as I just stole everything from him, but how he does that I don't know.

Edit on APM: In Sc2, most APM is superflous. You only need ~200 apm at extremely short-lived intervals (big battles that involve multiple micro-intensive units). An AVERAGE of 100 would probably work against top tier pros, if you could spike ~250-300. The pros like to keep themselves forced at a higher speed though (usually giving something along the lines of "staying sharp").

Yes! Civ4 is so frustrating to us players with high Action Per Minute! The game simply doesn't respond!!!
Look what Civ4 does to everyone's favourite pro-gamer:
