Civ 4 Rants Thread

^^ aldente xD

Okay, the pool on when this thread gets locked is now at 50:gold:. My bet is by 2200 CST.

...58 minutes past my expected time. I was wrong...

Oh, this joker.

Jatta Pake had another gem of a thread down in the mods section where he expressed his annoyance that people were still modding for Civ4 and not "getting with the times" and moving on to Civ5.

Well he was in the video for it ...
And He had a red nose. I would say it straight :) He was lying (blood vessels and bodily reactions You cannot cheat unless You are trained to so). He has not been trained :D : "I had no sex with that woman !" or something so foolish like that ! if I remember correctly :D That actually put an CIA in a bad light :D They could not cover president lies ? How come ? ;) " Sorry if I'm beeing too controversive :D

Remember the OP isn't nessecarily stating 5 is better then 4.
I agree that this fora needs a civ 4 rant thread (though I doubt many would dare).

Civ 4 is terrible.

1. Bad graphics. Civ 4 looks like it was made during the Bush years. The units are ugly, the terrain is all messed up looking, and the interface is nausea inducing.
2. Squares. The square tiles are lame. I want to play a strategy game, not Sid Mieir Chess.
3. Stacking Units. I'm supposed to believe 400 tanks are piled up on top of each other all the way to the moon?
4. Religion. It doesn't do anything as all religions have the same generic abilities. Boring.
5. Health. Oh fun, micromanaging city sanitation.
6. Road spam.
7. Vassal states. Blah.

1. as others have pointed out 4 was made in Bush years. I personally don't mind the graphics, and think that the good gameplay would make up for it (I still play aoe2).
2&3. Preferences. I feel that civ balance is more important then strategic warfare. Try FFH2 Multiplayer for an example of stack/square gameplay. As has been mentioned, a tile/unit is of undefined number/size. Adapt your imagination to suit the circumstances.
4. Again try a mod, even gods of old came with base (though is not an example of paticularly interesting religions, imho.).
5. Umm, okay. There's much worse micro in civ4, and health is hardly a big problem.
6. Don't build roads :)
7. Turn off vassals :) (I know I do...)

When I saw the first post, especially the Bush era point, I thought it was a poking-fun-in-jest type thread, a sort of "1000 'rants' about Civ4" type thread, a la 1000 Ways You Know You Play Civ Too Much, or 1000 Funny Screenshots. Seeing Little Faith's link to the gem of a thread, I see it sadly was not, but it might be fun to take this thread in that direction anyway.

And the Bush era one is a fantastic satirical complaint, even if it wasn't intended to be satirical. The third one is a pretty good satire, too. So without further ado...

8. Movement rates are way too slow. If I build an Ironclad in the mid-1800s, it can't even reach the next city over in a two-year turn. It would be faster to walk than take that ironclad!
9. The Great Wall having an effect outside the area where it is physically on the map. Barbarians should be smart enough to figure out the wall isn't for another 500 miles yet.
10. Hurrying production. Why no one accepts payment for work while having a hereditary ruler is beyond me.
11. Building big cities way far up in the tundra. You can have a million people living way far up north - people will keep moving there if there's fish in the sea no matter how cold it is. That's never happened in any other Civ game. :mischief:
12. Bureaucracy increasing production. Have you ever been to a DMV to renew your driver's license?

Anyone got a good one for lucky number 13?

Man, what a lot of rant here allready!!!
Seems like this thread will soon surpase the "Civ V rants thread" in quantity - and also in quality.
I am so ashamed I still play this bad piece of you-know-what... :shifty:

Anyone got a good one for lucky number 13?

Okaaay, let me try this one. *sigh
I don't like civ4 because...

13: I hate it everytime I recall what happened when I made my brother earn cash to upgrade my computer just to play this game. It's worth of money to buy a very nice dress. u.u
14: I dislike it when it makes me sleep very late at night and get to school late often. Talking about love-to-sleep ><"
15: I feel very stupid whenever I remember it made me buy "BTS" 'thout having any idea what "VANILLA" was. T.T
16: And worst, it's a guy game. And almost everyone thinks I'm boyish just because I lurk around this site and join the discussions. :|

I think it'll be better if I just go back to Faye'sbook and play Tetris, haha. :p

I agree with OP on all accounts. Civ 4 is horrendous, all this empire building nonsense and stuff. And dimplomacy, seriously? Just shoot em up, jeez. Not to mention making buildings in cities, is this Simcity or what?

I'm off to play Call of Duty, anyone coming along?

Yeah, this turn-based stuff is boring, why can't you challenge rival leaders to a duel for some combat action?

17. I don't like civ 4 because You can't blow things up and I like blowing things up :D Nuke is just a solution fo overpopulation... but Ye olde grenade in-a-pocket trick never gets old

12. Bureaucracy increasing production. Have you ever been to a DMV to renew your driver's license?

Just as a small aside, I lived a long time in a traditionally "liberal" state that spent quite a bit on government and now live in a traditionally "conservative" state that doesn't want to spend any money on government except to hand it to oil companies and I have to say I'd take the first any day. Trying to "slash big government" ends up with 6 hour waits to talk to a person for 10 minutes to get your license changed over, where before I thought a half-hour wait was atrocious.

ee my ultra boring thread in S&T and this will prove I'm not a troll. A troll is like ZZZ.

Z^3 is one of the greatest posters on the forum ever. He trolls the AI and abuses his civ population deliciously.

And oxford sucks :p.

Jatta Pake had another gem of a thread down in the mods section where he expressed his annoyance that people were still modding for Civ4 and not "getting with the times" and moving on to Civ5.

I'm sure civ V will get more modders once it's out of beta.

Gameplay priority >> graphics btw.

I agree that this fora needs a civ 4 rant thread (though I doubt many would dare).

Nope! Surely nobody would EVER complain about a broken control scheme in civ IV, how slow it runs, or the fact that units move against orders! Nobody would point out worst enemy map hack, the completely broken nature of a VC, or the imbalance of certain era jumps. Never. Would. Happen.

:D.

This kid better have eyes in the back of his head and sleep with a gun under the pillow.

I still remember this amazing story a girl was telling in class at college. Apparently her roomate got really angry with her and they were in a shouting match, so her roomate pulled a KNIFE on her. So what does she do? Of COURSE, she goes and gets her knife from UNDER HER PILLOW too!

I remember thinking "What?! Under your pillow?"...but I generally try not to question people who keep knives in odd places so I kept my thoughts to myself. I'm all for self-protection, but if I were to keep a sharp object or other dangerous weapon somewhere I could access it, it would not be somewhere I could easily cut myself with it.

16: And worst, it's a guy game. And almost everyone thinks I'm boyish just because I lurk around this site and join the discussions. :|

Exactly! Men. Lots of men. Only men. Nothing...but...men.

"No T. Romo".

Just as a small aside, I lived a long time in a traditionally "liberal" state that spent quite a bit on government and now live in a traditionally "conservative" state that doesn't want to spend any money on government except to hand it to oil companies and I have to say I'd take the first any day. There are no "traditionally conservative states", just states that waste taxpayer money in different ways than the "liberal ones". True free market capitalism and government that stays out of socialist practices hasn't existed in either party in your lifetime, I don't care how old you are.

Systemically, governments follow firm theory, with predictable outcomes from incentive structures. However, the people with the theoretical ultimate power in decision rights can't feasible access (and in many cases understand) what officials are doing, so the only true reincentive is either re-election or progression, regardless of the efficacy of governance. People who prioritize what's best for the long-term health of the country are filtered out (IE don't advance) as people who are willing to take "donations" and "give tax breaks or direct investments or whatever other distribution excuse works" + offer people more entitlements rise.

Yeah, this turn-based stuff is boring, why can't you challenge rival leaders to a duel for some combat action?

Why do we need rival leaders anyway? If we can't shoot them that is??? Heck, I am a solitary nerd computer geek!!! I don't wanna deal with any of those annoying people!!! And Firaxis actually wasted money and effort on 52 different ones, all of them trying to play the game, act rationally and DIFFERENTLY! What do I care??? In the next Civ game I want mindless bots that have no clue how to play the game, bounce off my core defence force and which I can abuse or ignore for good! Would be so much better than what we have in Civ IV...
Also diplomatic victories are so annoying in IV. One really has to be nice to those guys! Imagine that!!! We definitely need an entity added in the game that can simply be bribed to vote for us - would also be much more realistic, after all it's money that rules the world...

Democracy get's obsoleted once people discover thay can vote for themselves :D

18) The model scale is completely wrong. no man was ever born THAT tall.

19) so is the timescale. whats up with 100 year turns?!?! (??!!) it should be 1 day at a time

20) NO TRADINGPOSTS!!!! WHY!!! (!!!)!!

21) Individual city happiness and health??? omg why??? Better remove health and happiness. and culture and wealth and science too. Instead put a big "NEXT TURN" button in the middle of the screen. Its much easier that way, and no micro managements.

22) Thinking of 21 : Why not remove ALL micromanagements. In fact why not remove ALL managements. You get a Civ in 4000 BC, and next time you have to do something is to Vote at UN.

23) if not 22, then how about instead of limited units, or 1upt, we make ONE UNIT PER CIV. hah, good idea right?

24) Make units move realisticly. example : horses should move 2 forward and 1 to the side.

A LOT of good points anyhow I've always wondered how primitve cultures got 1 warrior trained in couple of hundred years (if not by thousand timescales haha) .... beyond meh :D
