Civ 4 Release - JUNE 1 /2005

it puzzles me how some people can believe in these unrealistic release dates.

Well, if the release date is indeed in June, then they must have rushed it a lot. This is BAD BAD news for the civ community.

Pop rushing can be useful sometimes. However, rushing a great wonder such as Civ4 is not possible.

(sorry couldn't resist :D)

Yeah, late 2005 will be the go. Anyhoo, I'll be lining up with the rest of you.

No way. This sucks. June 1? They will be rushing so much! The end result? A horrible and buggy and unbalanced game with a million copied stuff from other games.

they're rereleasing PTW?

This is how software time estimation works in real life:

1. Boss asks developer for time estimate.
2. Developer feels overconfident and gives short time estimate. :)
3. Boss shortens by 20% and reports to marketing. :D
4. Marketing shortens by 30% and starts spreading rumors. :mischief:
5. Rumors exagerate release date by 50%.
6. Third parties pick up on the rumors, subtract another month or two, and cite an "official" release date. :crazyeye:
7. Developer curses himself for not tripling his time estimate as he ends up working overtime... on Sundays. :suicide:

Sigh! :shakehead

REALLY FUNNY!

he's making a joke. PTW was, according to some people, 'A horrible and buggy and unbalanced game with a million copied stuff from other games.'

When I first saw this post I thought June 2005 was next year, then I realized that it was already 2005. Maybe I need to play less Civ and pay more attention to the real world.

I've been eagerly anticipating a certain book by George R.R. Martin, which Amazon originally said was coming out in Sept. 2003. Then it was Jan. 2004. Then it was April 2004. Then it was Aug. 2004. Well, it's still not out, so that shows how accurate those projections are.

Wow! If it is released in 2005 at all, I will be thrilled! :goodjob:
It will definitely be in 2005, even if the game is not complete. They'll loose too much money if they miss Christmas.

Maybe CIV Fanatics should have a release date pool, with the winner getting a free copy of CIV4. In case of ties winner gets picked out of a hat. :)

Sure, if everyone who picks a date sends me a buck. Or I win the office NCAA pool.

There's a Murphy's law on that matter:
A careless planned project take 3 times the estimated time to complete it. A carefully planned project takes only twice.
Supposing Firaxis do careful plans, consider the time interval from the start to june 2005 and... the true release date is left as an exercise.

I don't know about EB Games, but I preordered a book on Amazon that I'm still waiting for 2 or 3 years past the original publishing date. I figure I'll move before they ship the book.

I don't think I'll preorder anything again unless I'm confident in the publisher releasing it. In my case Amazon pulled a date out of their rear ends, as EB Games has apparently done here. Then again I'm fairly confident Civ4 will be out within a year.

However I'm usually one to wait a few months until it drops from US$60 or $50 down to about $30 or catch it on sale. Then again I have a woody for the Python and XML customization in the upcoming Civ4...

EDIT: There's a post by "Sid" above. That wouldn't be the Sid, would it? I wouldn't think he'd have to wait in line...
