Hi guys,

So you probably know Steam is coming to the Mac on Wednesday. I've been playing around with the beta, it looks like all the Civ IV titles will be coming to the platform as Steam Play titles, as they've appeared in my list of Mac Games. I bought the complete collection today for $10 (the Weekend Deal,) so if you don't have one of the expansions it's a cheap way to get it. Colonization has *not* appeared yet, but that might be because they are still in the process of uploading the Mac games to steam.

I missed the $10 Steam deal this weekend, which I did not know about, or I totally would have pounced on it.

I have Windows CD versions of Civ IV, Warlords, and BTS. Is there any way I can get these registered on Steam? It would suck to have to pay $40 to be able to play these again on my Mac.

Even if you had the weekend deal pack, you couldn't download it from steam right now. Idk what's going on. I have the weekend deal pack and it the store page says that the game is available for mac, but I still can't install it since the game is not "available for my current platform" http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1265275&page=3

a lota people on steam seem to have the same problem. Looks like SteamPlay™ is not really as purchase-once and tier-one platform as it was advertised before and maybe we'll have to make a new steam account for our mac games and purchase them again.

I seriously doubt that that is what is intended to occur. Now as to whether people who bought Civ 4 before Steam for Mac's release should get free Mac version download now that it is out via SteamPlay? that is murkier. What I can almost guarantee is NOT working as intended is that right now if you own the PC version you cannot buy OR download the Mac version... after all, why would they want to prevent purchases? I'm still holding out hope that it will be free for those that own it on PC so that I can mess with Steam some more before Civ V comes out.

I just can't imagine they actually want people making duplicate Steam accounts... The threads on the forum are unclear but in theory they may be "working on it".

This is really a mess. Civ IV is the *only* game that features SteamPlay that you had to buy after the 11th to get the Mac and PC versions. It is apparently 2K's fault, according to Aspyr.

You can't even rebuy the game if you wanted to, as it says you already own the game.

There's a good thread herehttp://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14926739#post14926739 about this. Hopefully a valve employee will respond soon.

I didn't read that whole thread, but if I'm reading it right, its saying that anyone who bought Civ IV prior to the release of Steam for Mac is having problems and anyone who bought it after the release is just fine. Is that correct?

I'm more worried about whether the HOF Mod will work, then anything else.

The Steam Civ4 for Mac will be the Aspyr software, and will not run the full HoF Mod because it can't run custom DLLs. It is likely that the Mac versions that I created will run, but they only allow players to join in the GOTM competitions. They can't compete in the HoF.

My PM just crossed this post.

My main question was in regards to both playing the HOF and SGOTM, so looks like the answer is no.

That's too bad, as the whole point of Steam for Mac was to make the games intercompatiable.

I don't think Steam is primarily about making games cross-platform. It's to open a new channel for making money out of gamers :)

It works like that for all titles with exception to Civ IV. My guess is it's something to do with Aspyr not getting any of the money for sales made before the Steam-Mac client was released.

If you buy Civ IV now, it will be classed as a SteamPlay title. Possibly because now Aspyr will be cashing in on some of the sales (I don't know if it would be a straight up percentage of all sales, or they'll have some way of working out a good estimate of sales made intending to be played on a Mac). That's almost certainly not true for past sales though. So unless 2K are willing to fork money over to Aspyr to cover all these past sales that potentially could be utilizing Aspyr's work, I don't see the situation changing.

What is Steam and SteamPlay? Is this a source to download CIV or only a license to access an online play version?

SteamPlay™ means that you can download games for mac that you've purchased for windows and vice versa.

By the way, it works now. we can download the games. Valve fixed it :)

So I take it that it doesn't matter that I own the PC and Mac Version of this game. If I want the Steam version I still pay the 39 for the set.

I have been complaining about the mac version for awhile, but if I can get the package via steam for "one low price" (sarcasm) I may just do that. I do not enjoy switching to PC when I want to game... and since Civ IV is really the only game I play frequently, this is worth it to me.

I don't really understand steam. I set up my account last night and downloaded a free game. I haven't played it yet, but from what I hear, it's a pretty cool thing to have.

I'm too old for all of this.

Valve have fixed the problem now. If you own a copy of Civ IV (and or expansions + colonization) on Steam it will now be available for you on both Windows and Mac.

Zaimejs, correct you'll have to rebuy it on Steam. Some games allow you to enter the CD-Key and the game will be tied to your Steam account, but Civ IV isn't one of these. Civ V on the other hand will be.
